It suddenly starts to rain, forcing the group of five to run to find shelter nearby, and Kogoro happens to see a shrine there.


There, the chief priest Tetsushin happily lets everyone in and asks the two monks, Kentetsu and Tontetsu, to welcome the guests. While Kazuha expresses her regret that the rain interrupts her wish to see the sunset on the mountain, Kentetsu says that the rain will stop by this afternoon. He also adds that the sunset here is also a very famous place, not just Mount Washio, which Kazuha confirms to be true through her tablet. She then suddenly asks Ran about what she is going to say after that dream-like situation happens, to which Ran reveals to Kazuha that [[The Scarlet School Trip|she is dating Shinichi]], much to Kazuha's delight because she hasn’t heard from the two for a while and worried that something unfortunate had happened.
[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]], [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]], and [[Kazuha Toyama|Kazuha]] are climbing to the top of Mount Washio when it rains. The umbrella Kazuha brought only has enough space for three people, so Kogoro and Heiji end up soaking in the rain. Luckily, Kogoro sees a shrine near the location where they are standing, so they decide to ask for permission to stay. The chief priest agrees to let them stay, and tells the other two monks to welcome them. The visit should be normal as the group rests at a room, until Conan suggests asking the fourth monks when Heiji’s amulet has been lost by accident, because the fourth monk has been missing for several days after being punished to go to the confessional for smoking. The monks also recall the appearances of the will-o’-the-wisp, which make everyone believe that the missing monk has been devoured by the monster appearing along with the will-o’-the-wisp, the crimson skeleton.  


Kogoro and Heiji suddenly come in without their shirts as they were drenched in the rain all the time before reaching the shrine. Then Tontetsu comes in with their clothes as well, but not with Heiji’s amulet, as it disappeared without the monk’s noticing. The other two happen to be passing by and notice the incident, but have no idea where it was as well. Conan suggests asking someone else in the shrine, thinking that there is someone else in the shrine, much to the surprise of the three as to how Conan knew about this. The boy explains that when they borrowed the towel to dry themselves, Conan saw four sets of toothbrushes and toothbrush cups, while in the shrine they had seen three people so far.  
Legend says that the crimson skeleton will devour the soul of wrongdoers and leave behind the corpse of victims.  


The chief priest explains that the other person was a monk who had disappeared 5 days ago after being punished to go to the confessional for smoking. Kentetsu adds in: At the same time that he disappeared, there were a few will-o'-the-wisps going up to the stair leading to that confessional, and that the monk was believed to be captured by the crimson skeleton. The chief priest tells them about the crimson skeleton, a monster that appeared with the said will-o'-the-wisps to devour the souls of wrongdoers and leave behind the empty corpse of the victims.
Later, Kogoro just finishes using the restroom, and is going back to the group when he sees an iron ball falling down from the stairs leading to the confessional. However, when Kogoro arrives at the top of the stairs, intending to give back the iron ball, he is knocked out by someone. Ran becomes worried because her father has gone for quite a while, then, everyone hears a terrifying scream. Outside the room where the scream originates, everyone witnesses the will-o’-the-wisp going straight to the confessional, leading to the answer of why the fourth monk is missing. Based on the environment around the body, Heiji concludes that the culprit must have been either one out of the three remaining monks.

The scene changes after Kogoro finishes using the restroom and is about to return to the room, when he notices an iron ball falling down from the stairs that seems to come from the aforementioned confession room. But the only thing waiting for him in the room is that someone is about to attack him. After a while, Ran becomes worried because her father has been gone for a long time and hasn’t returned, at the same time a very terrifying scream is heard. When the group goes outside, many will-o'-the-wisps are seen coming up the stairs. Waiting for everyone who enters the room is the body of the missing priest.
Meanwhile, Kogoro wakes up in a room, being bound on wrists and arms while also being gagged to avoid making a sound, trying to recall what he saw in the confessional before being knocked out.

While Heiji and Conan are analyzing the scene after the three monks arrive due to the girls' screams, Heiji suddenly finds his amulet; and before leaving the scene and waiting for the police to arrive, Conan notices a piece of wood shaving near the victim's body. Meanwhile, Kogoro wakes up in some strange room being tied but his phone was not taken away, Kogoro has to somehow inform either Ran or Conan about his condition before he ends up with a fate like the missing monk.
Currently, the police could not arrive at the shrine due to rain, so Conan and Heiji decide to ask the three monks for information about someone seeing spirit flames and a body in the woods, which was mentioned earlier in the episode by them. The chief priest recounts: One night around a month ago, a hiker passing by the steps in the woods nearby saw the spirit flame. The hiker fearlessly climbed the stone steps to see if anything was there or not, only to find a burnt corpse in the ground. The corpse belongs to a Buddhist religious art expert who had complained about the Kannon statue at the shrine earlier that faithful day.

The two detectives then begin to discuss the details, including how Heiji found the amulet. Additionally, Conan receives a message about the statues from Kogoro, who is missing, and the truth of the case seems to be about to be solved.

Just then, Conan receives a message from Kogoro containing only a picture of several statues.

The room also keeps a lighter used for camping and paper tubes to create the scenery of will-o’-the-wisp. One month ago, the Buddhist religious art expert discovered that the statue is not original, so he was killed by Tontetsu. Several days ago, Kantetsu happened to discover the secret room inside the confessional because it wasn’t shut properly, and saw statues looking one displayed at the shrine, Tontetsu murdered him to conceal the secret. Earlier the day, Tontetsu was opening the door using the magnet disguised as one of the beads of the prayer beads when he dropped it by accident. Kogoro picked up the magnet, assuming it was just an ordinary iron ball, intending to give it back. Tontetsu thought his secret could be revealed, so he electrocuted Kogoro and kept him in the confessional.

The culprit attempts to flee from custody, unawaring of how Conan and Heiji got the lighter and paper tubes. The duo reveal that they got it from the secret room, and that the secret room is where they found Kogoro tied. At the hallway of the shrine, Kogoro has been waiting for the culprit to give the monk his own medicine, Ran and Kazuha follow the culprit to witness him having been knocked out. Ran then notices the rain has stopped, so she grabs Heiji to Kazuha’s location in order to have him confess his feelings to Kazuha. Heiji and Kazuha are able to see the beautiful scenery of dusk at Mount Washio, but just as we thought what has to happen, has to happen, Heiji proposes that he and Kazuha should go home. Yes, we heard/saw that right! Heiji takes advantage of the beautiful scenery to tell her that the two should go home instead of confessing his feelings to her. Ran and Conan become speechless because of this.

The Crimson Skeleton of Mt. Washio (鷲雄山の紅蓮髑髏 Washio-san no Guren Dokuro?) is the 1178th and 1179th episode of the Detective Conan anime.

It adapts the Chapters 1116-1118 from the original manga. The Part 1 was first aired in October 11, 2025 and Part 2 at October 18, 2025.

In this two-parter, Conan, Ran, Kazuha, Heiji and Kogoro goes to Mt.Washio and took shelter from the rain at a nearby shrine. Things get detrimental when Kogoro goes missing and a terrifying scream that leads everyone to witness the legend will-o’-the’-wisp going upstairs to the confessional where the missing monk is found dead.

    Manga to anime changes

    Trivia

    • Mount Washio (鷲尾山 Washio-san?) is a direct reference to Mount Takao (高尾山 Takao-san?), a mountain in the Tokyo region and popular among tourists and locals to view Mount Fuji on the other side.
      • The mountain temple Shōgaku-ji (昇楽寺 Shōgaku-ji?) is a pun to the name of Conan's publisher, Shōgakukan (小学館), in the same fashion as the temple with the same name but different kanji (昇岳寺 in the previous case instead of 昇楽寺) from files 559-561[1]. The temple itself does not follow the design of the actual temple on Mount Takao, the Takaosan Yakuō-in (高尾山薬王院), which contains the similar looking kanji "薬". Instead, it follows the design of the Zōjō-ji (増上寺), famous temple in Tokyo. In particular, it is a replica of the Ankoku-den (安国殿), a secondary hall of the temple, which also has its famous relic, a statue of a standing Amida Nyōrai (an iteration of Buddha)[2].
      • The chastisement room has the same proportions as the storage room in Sandei Temple (山泥寺 Sandei-ji?) from files 108-110[N 1].
    • The names of the monks are related to iron (鉄 tetsu?) and monsters (妖怪 yōkai?)[3] :
