Aeyra Posted May 22, 2011 Report Posted May 22, 2011 9 *fishes out mathcounts problems* This is one of my favorites... Fido’s leash is tied to a stake at the center of his yard, which is in the shape of a regular hexagon. His leash is exactly long enough to reach the midpoint of each side of his yard. If the fraction of the area of Fido’s yard that he is able to reach while on his leash is expressed in simplest radical form as ((√ a )/ b )π, what is the value of the product ab? Now this is a real math problem. There's no point in extremely long ones that you just feed to a calculator. Edit: The extra space in the parenthesis is because it made the b and the ) into a smilie..

Edit: The extra space in the parenthesis is because it made the b and the ) into a smilie.. Area of hexagon= 2r*6*2r/2 --> apothem X perimeter / 2 = 12r2 ( it meant squared but I'm on iPhone now it's diff for me to type >_<) so fraction = pi r squared ( area of circle) / 12r2 = pi/12 So √a/b = 1/12 a= b sq / 144 ab = b cube / 144 ???? The answer sounds wrong though... =\
Aeyra Posted May 23, 2011 Report Posted May 23, 2011 Nope. Try and draw it. It'll become easier that way.
