Agreed. It is mostly the side characters.
-
Alright so this was done by request. It seems that we can't escape the topic in DC in most discussions about characters. Perhaps its because it seems that the side characters develop more than main cast... I don't know. But lets discuss shall we? I'll search for my various posts on the subject at a later date.

What I'm really good at eh...? I'm good at gauging my opponents and figuring out what their strengths are. This allows me to control the pacing and the distance of the fight (which I couldn't do without my height). The only people I have a problem with are good BJJ practitioners and those who are really good at circular martial arts. The former because they are talented at breaking through guard and the latter because its harder to get a bead on them. As for avoiding fighting tactics... I don't enjoy running away... too much effort and they can still chase after (though I'm quite fast, running still means that my back is to my opponents and if they can catch me I'm at a disadvantage). What I usually do to avoid fights is intimidate. It helps that while walking I usually look irate or slightly crazy. But yeah... Intimidation, getting the people to doubt their ability to beat me, works best imo. I've been told by a few of my friends that I have an air about me that basically says "don't mess with me" while I'm walking. And according to my id picture I've mastered the "I've killed people before" look (seriously, my ID picture looks like a mugshot of a guy who just killed several people, its quite hilarious).

Why must I always make the threads...? -sigh- Fine... I'll get on it... But it will be bear bones starting off... I have scattered all my posts about character development all over DCW and DCTP... And I am not retyping all of that material. ><
-
Did DCW know that DCTP just released file 802? Well its true! Now go get it!

That is an argument, not a debate.
-
Just quickly... If that is your definition of a pointless debate, then yes, this is a pointless debate, since neither side will make a concession or cede the point. In regards to what I quoted... nope. I like development. The mysteries is what kept me going for so long and the overall community. I have thought about dropping DC several times in lieu of just sticking to literary mystery. But for now I'm still here.
-
This is a pointless debate... Just wondering... How is not trusting people "That's silly, don't do that" flaw? I'm sorry, but I don't think you've ever been stabbed in the back. Her past has given her no reason to trust anyone at any point. And there are *plenty* of people whom have locked away their emotions for one reason or another, and it is usually trauma... You know like being forced to make a drug to murder, and finding out that your entire family is gone most likely due to murder. (Ok, I haven't known anyone with that exact situation, but one of my oldest friend's parents met an untimely end in a traffic accident. I saw him after I graduated HS (he moved away to live with his god parents). He locked away almost all emotion, his godparents told me that he may never have real emotions again because facing the pain of losing his parents like that might send him over the edge.) So it isn't stoicism, and there are plenty of cases like that. I'm not going into the rest. It was a mistake coming into this thread again. Think what you will. But 90% of the characters in DC are cookie-cutout characters, that includes the DBoys and the MPD. In fact I can't think of any character in DC, at this moment, that I haven't seen at least a few times elsewhere. It is why I hate DC. I've said this before, but the only reason I'm still here is the community and the hope that I will one day see the resolution of the BO (and a few of the mysteries).

Haibara has some of the most realistic flaws in the whole of DC. She is also possibly the most flawed character because of what she went through. Her cynicism, general mistrust of people (to the point where she won't tell people what she's planning), her dark history (which affects her in a negative way, especially since she is probably emotionally destroyed having her entire family killed by the BO (this is linked with my last listing as well)), her lack of a proper childhood, and lets not forget her locking away of almost all real emotion. The only thing that makes her not flawed is her intelligence. She doesn't have any great abilities physically, and her "BO sense" has been called into question several times. Her knowledge of the BO is linked with her criminal activities (oh yeah, that should also probably be counted as a flaw, she is technically a criminal). And I also said that Ran was a cookie cutout character. Almost all of them are. Haibara is too, though she at least developed some for a while, but her character archetype is pretty well known and often used. Shinichi, Mitsu, Genta, Ayumi, Sonoko... all are cookie cutout characters. Chek even noted that for Ayumi, and it is true. Gosho is using WELL ESTABLISHED character archetypes and not developing them. That has been my biggest contention with this series for a long time.
-
The fact that they have flaws is WHY they have a big fanbase. Perfect characters are boring and 2-dimensional. I think, despite her flaws, Ran is still too much of a mary-sue type character and among other things, like lack of development, is the reason why I dislike her. I like Haibara because she actually has developed (but has ceased in recent chapters, but I hope that will change with more BO arcs and exposure). Yes, she has flaws, but that is what makes her interesting as a character. No relationship is perfect, all relationships need work. And again things that are not perfect make a more interesting story. It also makes it more realistic. Not to mention flaws make characters more identifiable, because lets face it, the world isn't perfect, nor are relationships nor are people. Perfect situations are generally unbelievable.

Most people don't realize that "Karate" and "Kung-fu" refer to martial arts of the countries rather than a specific style. Karate is the unarmed striking arts of Japan, and Kung Fu is the name of all chinese martial arts. I blame the media for this. I also blame the media for the gross misconception of the ninja. But I'll try not getting into that here, unless people want me to.
-
Several and none. Weapons to me are only to improve the basics of unarmed combat. However, my knife training is the most useful, knowing how to use a knife also means you know how to defend against a knife. And knives are among the most popular weapon you'll see in the street. But really, I like keeping it unarmed. I'll never have a bo, nunchaku, kali stick, bamboo whip, sword, sai, kama or tonfa in real life. Btw, in order of how much I was trained it goes Bo, katana, knife, kali sticks, tonfa, nunchaku, straight sword, sai and kama. The top three I was trained pretty strictly in. Oh right, I also learned how to fire a bow and arrow from my father. And was taught knife throwing as well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chinese_martial_arts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_karate_styles That Chinese martial arts list is totally incomplete. But yeah... There are a spare few of each.

Yes... Wing Chun does attack and defend at the same time, mostly through trapping. Jeet Kun Do does the same, but you have to remember the only reason JKD does is because WC does. Wing Chun was Bruce Lee's first martial art and he learned it under Ip Man. That said, I should mention that JKD isn't so much a martial art as a system of thinking about combining various arts. Bruce Lee did not live long enough to cement it into a complete martial art. Which Karate and which Kung Fu???? Technically if you are using just those words I'll go ahead and say "none" because Kung Fu essentially always has an art comparable to a style of Karate. (there are TONS of Kung Fu styles, I only know of a handful, but there are many more, especially regionally). If you want gross generalizations... Most people would say Kung Fu has lower stances and is more circular and Karate is more linear and has higher stances. This however is again, a gross generalization and completely false.

Welcome. Judging by your intro and chosen name, we should get along smashingly.

^This. Very true. You'll learn what you are taught and that will become the basis of your style, unless you are like me and end up rejecting it for your own style that you feel is most effective for you. Systema or Krav Maga. Focus is on simple and effective. They both take from a variety of arts to bring you something that just works. In order... Each style, as I stated, has their benefits and weaknesses. There is no perfect art, only a perfect practitioner. Basically you become good enough to make you effective in any situation. Get the idea of "easy" out of your head. Doesn't exist. Martial arts advancement is directly proportional to how much effort you put into it. Every martial art is hard in its own way, but you will reap the benefits no matter what. In the end you got to choose a martial art that best suits you. By a strange twist of fate, TKD was almost perfect for me due to my height and size. I was able to make use of my long legs. However, the more I started training with other styles the more I realized that left me open in close and HKD was not cutting it, because I wanted to be able to do hand to hand. I was fortunate enough to find a master in Wing Chun who agreed to take me on as his student. That is what really changed my outlook. I went from there and was more intensely trained in military style TKD and HKD and my style slowly started evolving to suit most my needs. I eventually realized that I needed ground work, and that is what I am still working on. I'm looking for a new school to learn or get back with my friend from college who is currently learning and training lower belts in his school. Taichi... Most people don't understand this art. I did at one point formally learn taichi from one of my students in TKD along with a bit of Wushu (odd thing... but I don't consider it formal training as it was more of an exchange) And she told me this... True taichi's goal is to start off soft and become hard, while most arts start of hard and strive to become soft. Taichi is highly effective and is similar to aikido in some ways, but ultimately its goal for nonhealth benefits is to be an effective fighting style like all other arts. Depends on the style. As stated, I learned tournament style first, then learned Wing Chun and then new master taught me Military style. And let me tell you, some of my most effective techniques, not from Krav Maga, were learned from him. And a lot of those are close range. The easiest to explain is... You block the initial punch and circle around into an arm lock... Then kick out one knee and force them down. Then you do multiple palm strikes to the bridge of the nose until it is shattered. Fight is over, they can't breathe and you can walk away. And that is all a close range technique. In the end it is how you are trained, and what you are trained for. I was not trained for competition in my later years, nor did I ever train my adult students for that. I trained myself and my students for the real world. And TKD was originally a military art and has PLENTY of brutal techniques. If you learned it like that you will use it like that, if you learned it for competition a lot of the techniques in TKD cannot be used because of illegality.

Why? Because we were trained in martial arts? That doesn't make us dangerous, that makes us safe. We learned control. You got to watch out for the untrained nut jobs who THINK they know how to fight. Naw, I think the mods can handle everything here, no need for assassinations. Besides... Why would I assassinate using martial arts when I can use science? Martial arts is for self-defense, science doesn't have such restrictions.

We should have a day where everyone goes on.
Kyuu Nye replied to ShiroKuro's topic in Detective Conan World
Several people several times, yes. -
Based on her age and the fact that she has been back for a year, she is 1st Poom.
-
-sigh- No martial art is inherently more dangerous than the next. None. I hate it when people say that. The only ones arguable are the purpose built ones for military like Krav Maga and Systema. All the rest have their dangerous moves and their not so dangerous. I have trained long enough to know this as fact. Are the knees and lower kicks of Muay Thai really effective? Yes, but so are the higher kicks of TKD and Shotokan, Kenpo, Kyukushin and other forms of Karatedo. A proper kick from any art can break bones and shatter limbs. And knees and elbows are just simply effective, with or without training. Training just helps generate more power and accuracy. I've learned a variety of arts officially and unofficially. Some were beneficial to me, others not so much. The best things I learned were pressure points and locks from HKD and JJ and the ground work from BJJ. Then learning how to apply those things in a simple and effective way through Krav Maga just made sense and created my art which is based around personal effectiveness in a pinch. Sometimes dirty? Yes, but I'll survive, the other person might not. I have to say though... the Wing Chun punching style is fantastic. Nothing beats it. I've proven to a few friends that once I get in in a pure punching game with only lower kicks, all I need to do is break through for a second and its over. But Wing Chun is not infallible and needs to be supplemented with arts that can deal with locks and take downs.
-
Indeed. Kazuha does Aikido. His mother also is a fighter, though I don't know what style. And btw, Misaki-chan, so long as you know how to throw a punch and kick properly, most things you make up will be real moves that your body will instinctively do. So it isn't a bad thing.

By not talking about it here and going over to the new thread and talking about it there. Really... Now lets stop and allow people to state whom they are most similar to. We have hijacked this thread enough <3
-
Alright. So this was bound to happen, whether it is because there are a few martial artists on here or because several of the DC characters are martial artists, this thread was inevitable. Whatever your style or philosophy of martial arts, it is welcome. I for one do not believe in competition because it clouds the pure style with rules. Most sports practitioners call me cheap because I use certain moves that are illegal in competition due to the nature of my training, but those whom I have befriended in the martial arts all agree with me to at least some degree, though we all love the sport of MMA.

I'm going to make a martial arts thread in Chatroom. Please move all related convos there, and allow this thread to go back on track.
