Case

Situation

As Kogoro, Ran, and Conan are on their way home from a hot spring, they boarded a train together with a pair of doctors. They arrived at a station where one may change trains to another line, but no one could possibly change trains since the two lines are scheduled differently by a mere five-minute difference. At the station where the trio are to change trains to one going to Tokyo, a murder is discovered. The only suspect rides in the train with Conan's group while the victim rides on a train from a different line.

The police found the corpse of Utsumi, who died of poisoning.

The culprit is Takashi Date. The victim was blackmailing the doctor on incidents of malpractice and so was silenced. The decisive evidence of his guilt was that he robbed the victim including a substantial amount of coins to give the impression of indiscriminate robbery. To keep the impression that he was on the same train the victim was in the entire time he bought a drink using one of those coins. The possibility of fingerprints was brought up but none were found suggesting Date wiped them off. However, that included those of the stewardess which proves his involvement in the crime.
