Three days ago, Mutsumi Seino suddenly told her husband Daiichiro and her mother-in-law Ura that all of them should move away like what the Sasakis did that morning because Mrs.Sasaki told her that they were fleeing from their cursed house, which both Daiichiro and Ura laughed it off. The next night, Mutsumi told her husband that she was experiencing symptoms often seen in a cold – but she put all the blame on the curse, and they must move away before things could have gotten any worse! Daiichiro decided to peek at the house this morning since he was worried about his wife’s behavior. He is doing so when spotted by Conan and Kogoro, who then decide to take on the case when Daiichiro mentions the house is cursed.

In Mouri Detective Agency, Daiichiro recounts the situation to Kogoro and Conan, and how rushed Mutsumi was when convincing everyone to move away. Kogoro then calls the Sasakis to ask why they moved – they moved away because of work, and did not mention anything about the rumor. Kogoro then asks Daiichiro if his wife showed any change in her behavior, which he recalls the morning three days before: “When he was watering the plants, Mutsumi went home from shopping. However, she looked dazed while mentioning something five years ago that was not over.” Kogoro and Conan discuss the situation again after Daiichiro goes home, and conclude that Mutsumi wanted to move away so that the mistake she made five years ago remains a secret.

They choose to go to the Seino residence to talk it out with her about the mistake. Meanwhile, Daiichiro receives information from a hospital that Mutsumi fell down the steps at the Beika Station, so he needs to go see his wife there. The two allow him to do so, and wait until a taxi arrives at the location, where he and Mutsumi get off the car. Coincidentally, Daiichiro has to leave her to buy bandages because he forgot to do so on their way home, letting his wife confront Kogoro and Conan as they expose her lies. Eventually, she confesses the past mistake she made five years ago when she was visiting Kazahaya Art Museum: She was at the park outside when a drunkard named Kenji Murakumo tried to grab her. She pushed him away, and once she saw him lying unconscious on his side, she slipped away from the scene before running into Atsuko Uryu, who was going in the opposite direction. On the next day, she saw news of Murakumo’s death on TV, and was worried since the police could come at any moment to arrest her, which hasn’t happened since. One week ago, she saw Uryu again, having moved one week prior, and was afraid if the two ran into each other again. She had to move away from the neighborhood, but needed a reason to do so – she made up the rumor of the Sasakis moving away from their cursed home.

Mutsumi confesses having pushed a man when he tried to grab her five years before. However, news reports on the next day showed that the man had died from a blow on the back of his head. She also ran into Atsuko Uryu when she just started to slip away.

She has now come up with the decision to turn herself to the police. Just then, Conan asks how she got injured, to which she recalls that she was pushed by someone. Moreover, she presents the letter she found in the family mailbox, which she believes to be the punishment she deserved from lying.

At first, Conan suspects Mutsumi for faking her accident. However, it turns out that someone pushed her.

Moments after Mutsumi leaves the park, Kogoro and Conan decide to look into the case five years ago to see if it can help with the bizarre letter. They arrive at Kazahaya city police department, where Kogoro meets again with Hitoshi Yukigaya – a police officer he worked with in a robbery case. They are surprised to learn from the police perspective that the people who found the body and called the police were an old couple. Since Murakumo was disliked by many, the police investigated on the people who had a grude with him, but reached a dead end after finding nothing conclusive on the possible suspects. Conan than drags Kogoro to the park and expresses doubts on Uryu because she should have found something odd when a woman who ran into her was running away from the body.

Kogoro's deduction

Kogoro calls Yukigaya to ask for information about Uryu, and learns that she was one of Murakumo’s blackmail victims. From there, he believes Atsuko Uryu has been trying to protect Mutsumi because:

• Firstly, since Atsuko Uryu was one of Murakumo’s blackmail victims, she despised him so much that she would be happy when she saw him dead, thus explaining why she chose to protect Mutsumi when she ran away from the body in a hurry.
• Secondly, Mutsumi and Uryu must have noticed the presence of each other at some point after Uryu moved in, so they needed to avoid each other. Uryu acknowledged the rumor of the cursed house when she overheard Ura’s gossip with her friends, so she put a letter to the Seinos’ mailbox to help Mutsumi convince their family to move away.

Conan's deduction

Kogoro then decides to reach out to Atsuko in order to have her convince Mutsumi that curses or divine punishments aren’t real, so that she can turn herself in with a clear mind. Meanwhile, Conan thinks of another possibility from Kogoro’s hypothesis, and makes a call to Yukigaya to ask about the case five years ago in full detail. He learns that in addition to the blow on the back of Murakumo’s head, there was bruising on the side of his head; and when the police arrived at the park, the victim was face-up instead of sideways; Atsuko Uryu testified to the police that she was at home during the time of the murder. These suggest that she murdered Murakumo after he woke from the unconscious, and she is trying to get rid of Mutsumi – by either having her dead or get lost. Conan found an old lady who saw Uryu rushed from the steps where Mutsumi fell.
