Once upon a time in Kyoto, a detective play about Heiji and Kogoro was set to be produced, featuring big names in the acting industry such as [[Osamu Kenzaki]], [[Hyouga Koumoto]], and Ninka Gyouda. During the writing process though, an affair between Gyouda and Reisuke Inaba (who was married) caused [[Momiji Ooka's Sweet Trap|irreversible damage]] to the production staff, to the point that the play should have been cancelled. It ended up getting more attention, and the replacement staff were paid a ridiculous amount of money to finish the script. The Mouri family, [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]], and [[Kazuha Toyama|Kazuha]] (who is currently wearing a facemask due to sickness) are at Naniwa Art Theater, Osaka to see that heavily altered detective play.


Once the play is over, the group comes to the dressing room to visit Kenzaki and Koumoto. From there, we learn that Kenzaki is now engaged with fellow actress Yuki Takeno after she proposed to him on the observation deck of Naniwa Harukas on a glowing sunset evening. The scenery has since become a famous spot for love proposals. Heiji’s expressions show that he wants to confess his feelings to Kazuha, but he also gets nervous due to previous failed attempts. Kogoro finds it strange because Momiji, the model of Heiichi’s fiancée Kadeo Ootsuka, is not present in the theater. Koumoto and Kenzaki explain that she had to go for a Karuta match, even though she wanted to join in.
More actors from the play appear in the dressing room:
* Toshikata Yoshiura comes in first and reveals he was the one behind Daigoro in the play just now. In fact, he is Kenzaki’s stand-in just in case he couldn’t appear in the play due to schedule.
* The two next actresses to come in are Youka Kuraishi and Miku Narasawa. Kuraishi takes the role of Heiichi’s fiancée Kaede Ootsuka, while Narasawa does so with Ootsuka’s rival Ochiba Toyama – who is obviously modeled after Kazuha.
* Narasawa asks Kazuha if her performance was good. Kazuha reluctantly says yes, but Ayari Kakiwaki comes in and says it just showed how frustrated Narasawa was when she wasn’t assigned with the role of Kaede. Kakiwaki was the one behind Rieko Mouri – who was modeled after Eri Kisaki.
* The last two are Nobuya Nagakubo and Tenma Anzaka. Nagakubo takes the role of Suruga Iori – modeled after Momiji’s butler Muga Iori, while Tenma is Koumoto’s stand-in just like Kenzaki’s case.
Tenma reveals that he just wants to get over with his final performance as the play was deemed to be cursed. He explains that after the script was finished by the replacement staff, the scriptwriter caught a fever while the director got caught in an accident. Tenma also reveals how Kabumoto behaved previously to the cast, thus earning him the nickname "the devil puppeteer".
Kogoro’s group then leaves the room. The men comment they have just witnessed the dark side of the acting industry while Ran asks Kazuha what surprise she has been keeping for her. Suddenly, they hear a strange sound outside the building, followed by sounds of people talking about someone who died from falling. Heiji and Conan have to go down to the location since their views are blocked by a curious crowd. Once they get inside the crowd, they find Narasawa hit her head too hard on the ground. In addition, her current pose resembles that of a puppet, and there was a message sent in the cell phone nearby stating that they are the devil puppeteer.

Narasawa’s detective play colleagues also come to confirm if the person who fell down was her or not, with Tenma loudly asking if she actually jumped off from the building. Before his colleagues can ask why he said so, Heiji asks who this cell phone belongs to. Kuraishi finds it similar to Narasawa’s, and Tenma asks if it has something written, to which Conan shows the words on the screen. Kuraishi becomes shocked and faints, while Kakiwaki watches her with a smile.

The incident impacted the cast of the play, as redistribution of roles is required and rehearsals have to be carried out afterward. Therefore, they insisted on having the interrogation made inside the theater troupe building. Kogoro’s group also has to go with Inspector Otaki to verify the suspects’ statement since they were the only ones to meet the main cast after the play. The interrogation happens in the following order:
* Tenma becomes the first since Kogoro’s group saw Narasawa trying to go with him. He explains she did so because she had a crush on him and wanted to confess her feelings to him at Naniwa Harukas. Tenma was then in the restroom as a way to shake her off, and did not meet her until the scene. Otaki asks him who might have something against her, and he mentions Kuraishi since Narasawa repeatedly teased her Kyoto dialect. One notable thing is that Otaki and Tenma seem to have met previously.
* Kuraishi admits her Kyoto dialect speaking was helped by Kabumoto, whose curse she thought to be affecting her next when she saw the message. Notably, she denies Kogoro’s accusation in panic when he suggests there had to be something else between her and the victim. Otaki also asks whom she finds to have something against the victim, and she mentions Kakiwaki since both did not get along well despite being from the same agency.
* Kakiwaki objects what Kuraishi thinks of her since she and Narasawa were just rivals. She mentions it was herself who revealed to her about the weakness of her love rival, whom she does not reveal in full detail and says the police should do it instead. She suggests Nagakubo as a suspect because his attempts to hit on Narasawa were all rejected.
* Nagakubo denies the accusation and believes his attempts would eventually catch her attention, to which Ran and Kazuha view as creep. Otaki asks if he was the one calling the police. He explains the reason he did so was because he felt Tenma had been in the scene prior but acted as if he just came with the others. However, Heiji points out Tenma’s alibi that he did not mention, suggesting he was unlikely to be the murderer. Yoshiura then catches strays because Nagakubo remembers how he seemed to be predicting things in a previous conversation.
* However, Yoshiura is nowhere to be seen in the interrogation room. A police officer in the room explains he has been in the toilet because he ate something that upsetted his stomach in the morning, so the only option is to interrogate him in the restroom. Nothing worth bothering here, so let’s just return to the rehearsal room!


Among the people in the rehearsal room, all suspects beside Kuraishi are not present. This is because Nagakubo went to buy cigarettes outside, Kakiwaki went out for a phone call, and Tenma took a nap 30 minutes ago (Yoshiura is just... suffering in the toilet, so let him alone this time). Coincidentally, now it’s the time for her to wake him up, so Heiji and Conan tag along as she goes to his room to do so. Just not long after they reach the room and fail to wake him up, a scream can be heard outside the room, so they go to the balcony and find Kakiwaki dead in the parking lot.

The two detectives rush to the parking lot along with Kogoro and Otaki. Kakiwaki’s death shares similarities to Narasawa’s since her pose resembles that of a puppet while a message is found in her phone, stating there are two more left. Another round of interrogation is carried out: The puppet poses of the victims remind all suspects of the semaphore symbols board that Kabumoto made Tenma and Kuraishi remember for a previous play, while the others didn’t have to remember. Aznaka, after having his alibi proven to be legitimate, volunteers to take the symbols board while Nagakubo continues his interrogation. After his alibi is also proven to be legitimate, he asks for permission to smoke in the balcony of this room. Yoshiura’s second interrogation is ignored since it is just his stomach acting up, while Kuraishi’s interrogation did not go out well because she fainted again upon seeing pictures of murder scenes. She was then taken to the rehearsal room by Ran and Kazuha. Once she woke up, the two went out to fetch some drinks for her, but she silently went out the other way while reassuring her colleagues that she would like to pick on her own.

It turns out that she intends to commit suicide without anyone acknowledging, desperate because of the recent deaths. Ran and Kazuha are able to reach her before she can jump off of the building, though the atmosphere is cut off completely when Nagakubo falls to his death. From the semaphore symbol board Tenma gets, everyone begins identifying the letters the victims resemble – Narasawa displays an E; Kakiwaki displays an V; and Nagakubo displays an I.

Therefore, Tenma’s self-defense was not excessive at all. In the end, Yoshiura invited both of them to Tokyo to keep them away from the remaining thugs.”

Coincidentally, the police found a picture of an article about the past case on Narasawa's phone, so there is likely to be a connection between it and the current one. Kogoro tells Otaki to join the interrogation while Heiji and Conan don’t have to do so, still, Conan gives Otaki one of his detective badges so that he and Heiji can eavesdrop the whole interrogation. The interrogation does not show anything useful, so the duo go around the building. In the corridor where they can see certificates inside picture frames, they notice a strange gap. Two employees of the theater group explain it belongs to a certificate that has been missing since this morning, with the tablet it was saved on also missing. Just then, another employee comes to inform the others about Tenma’s mother, as she claims her son had an alibi at the time Narasawa died, so the two reach out to her at the back entrance. It is revealed that Narasawa fell at the same time she and Tenma took pictures together, however, she was told by her son not to share the pictures to anybody after he checked on the body. She also mentions Tenma is having a terminal illness, which only Yoshiura was the other to learn about. Suddenly, Conan and Heiji are able to figure out the truth.
