Three days ago, Mutsumi Seino suddenly told her husband Daiichiro and her mother-in-law Ura that all of them should move away like what the Sasakis did that morning because Mrs.Sasaki told her that they were fleeing from their cursed house, which both Daiichiro and Ura laughed it off. The next night, Mutsumi told her husband that she was experiencing symptoms often seen in a cold – which she just put all the blame on the curse, and demanded everyone to move away before things could have gotten any worse. Daiichiro decided to peek at the house this morning since he was worried about his wife’s behavior. He is doing so when spotted by Conan and Kogoro, who then decide to take on the case when Daiichiro mentions the house is cursed.

In Mouri Detective Agency, Daiichiro recounts the situation to Kogoro and Conan, and how rushed Mutsumi was when convincing everyone to move away. Kogoro then calls the Sasakis to ask why they moved – they moved away because of work, and did not mention anything about the rumor. Kogoro then asks Daiichiro if his wife showed any change in her behavior, which he recalls the morning three days before: “When he was watering the plants, Mutsumi went home from shopping. However, she looked dazed while mentioning something five years ago that was not over.” Kogoro and Conan discuss the situation again after Daiichiro goes home, and conclude that Mutsumi wanted to move away so that the mistake she made five years ago remains a secret. They choose to go to the Seino residence to talk it out with her about the mistake. Meanwhile, Daiichiro receives information from a hospital that Mutsumi fell down the steps at the Beika Station, so he needs to go see his wife there. The two allow him to do so, and wait until a taxi arrives at the location, where he and Mutsumi get off the car. Coincidentally, Daiichiro has to leave her to buy bandages because he forgot to do so on their way home, letting his wife confront Kogoro and Conan as they expose her lies.

Mutsumi confesses having pushed a man when he tried to grab her five years before. However, news reports on the next day showed that the man had died from a blow on the back of his head. She also ran into Atsuko Uryu when she just started to slip away.

Eventually, she confesses the past mistake she made five years ago when she was visiting Kazahaya Art Museum: "She was at the park outside when a drunkard named Kenji Murakumo tried to grab her. She pushed him away, and once she saw him lying unconscious on his side, she slipped away from the scene before running into Atsuko Uryu, who was going in the opposite direction. On the next day, she saw news of Murakumo’s death on TV, and was worried since the police could come at any moment to arrest her, which hadn’t happened since." The reason she demanded to move away was that she saw Uryu again one week ago, as Uryu moved in her neighborhood half a month ago, and was afraid that Uryu would report her to the police if the two ran into each other again. The catch is she needed a reason to do so, which was sparked when she saw the Sasakis moving away. Now, she has come up with the decision to turn herself in to the police. Just then, Conan asks how she got injured, and she recalls that she was pushed by someone from behind. Moreover, she presents the letter she found in the family mailbox, which she believes to be the punishment she deserved for lying.

At first, Conan suspects Mutsumi for faking her accident. However, it turns out that someone pushed her.

Moments after Mutsumi leaves the park, Kogoro and Conan decide to look into the case five years ago to see if it can help with the bizarre letter. The two arrive at Kazahaya city police department where Kogoro meets Hitoshi Yukigaya, a police detective he worked with in a robbery case during his time on the force. They learn from the police perspective that the people who reported the body to the police were, in fact, an elderly couple. The case was tough because they didn’t get a single tip about any suspicious people in the area, thus Mutsumi never came up in the investigation. Moreover, the case went unsolved with the direction that Murakumo was killed by someone who had a grudge on him because they found nothing conclusive on the possible suspects.

At Kazahaya Art Museum Park, Conan points out to Kogoro that Uryu should have given a tip to the police about Mutsumi, the woman she ran into. This is because even if she did not see Murakumo’s body, news of his death on TV should have reminded her of Mutsumi based on the circumstances.

Kogoro's deduction

Kogoro suddenly thinks of something, and inquires Yukigaya about Uryu. He learns from the police detective that she was blackmailed by Murakumo, thus confirming his theory to be correct as he hangs up the call. He believes that Uryu knew Mutsumi murdered Murakumo, but decided to cover her crime since she despised the victim and wanted him dead. In addition, he also explains that the cursed note was made by Uryu as a way to help Mutsumi convince her family to move away from the neighborhood, as she and Mutsumi did notice the presence of each other at some point after she moved in the area.

Conan's deduction

Kogoro decides that they should have Uryu reassure Mutsumi that curses or divine punishments aren’t real, so Mutsumi can turn herself into the police with a clear mind. However, Conan notices the obvious flaw that Uryu’s method to help Mutsumi was too extreme, and questions himself if it was not meant to do so. From there, he gets another theory as he inquires with Yukigaya about the case five years ago in full detail. He learns from the police detective that there was bruising on the side of Murakumo’s head in addition to the blow on the back of his head; the victim was facing upward instead of sideways when the police arrived at the scene; and Uryu testified to the police that she was at home during the time of the murder. These details suggest Mutsumi only caused Murakumo to be unconscious, and Atsuko Uryu murdered him as he woke up from the unconscious. She has been living in fear that Mutsumi will expose her lies to the police during her interrogation, so she initially wanted her to move away, but realized it would be easier to silence her forever when she met her in Beika Station, thus leading to the incident there. Ironically, a Beika Station cleaning staff saw someone matching Uryu's description rush away from the scene, and talked to Conan when he was investigating at the station.
