Case

Situation

Kogoro was invited by Reiko Mutsu to come to her residence, with Ran and Conan tagging along. They are welcomed by Reiko’s secretary Shinji Inui upon arriving. Suddenly, the four are alerted by a scream, and go to the source to check it out. There, they find a mysterious man threatening Reiko with a knife, but he starts to run away as soon as he sees the four.

Kogoro and Conan chase the man, but he manages to get into the Annex–where Reiko’s husband Taro resides. It is at this point that everyone becomes concerned, as Reiko reveals how weak her husband is, only for everyone to learn that Taro somehow retaliates against the man and kills him.

The man is Takeshi Akamatsu, a rough who will do anything for money. The police initially think that Akamatsu climbed through the wall to sneak attack Reiko following someone's request, but was discovered by the Mouris and the secretary, so he ran away. Unfortunately, he went into Taro’s room and was killed as an act of self-defense.

Nonetheless, he is still taken away for further investigation. Conan suddenly smiles and admits Reiko’s bravery when she was worrying about Taro's well-being. Later, at Taro's room, Kogoro finds pictures containing Akamatsu's in the trash bin, convincing himself that the case has a different culprit.

Kogoro's deduction and the motive he believes

Kogoro deduces that the mysterious man we saw at the beginning was Taro in disguise, because there is a watch in Akamatsu’s left hand, implying that he is right-handed, while the man they saw earlier is left-handed as he was holding the knife with his left hand, like what Taro did earlier when trying to clean up his room. And the fireplace he lit up was meant to burn the disguise costume, thus warming Akamatsu’s body and messing up the investigation.

The motive Kogoro believes was to protect the real culprit, who is Reiko. The reason she killed him was for self-defense when Akamatsu got angry upon hearing that Kogoro would be here, Taro later knew this so he tried to protect her by doing what Kogoro is deducing. She is taken later, but Conan notices something strange around. Has the case ended already?

The truth of the case

At night, Taro looks at the portrait of him, his wife, and Mr.Mutsu, and suddenly laughs out loud, only to be revealed as the true culprit of the murder by Sleeping Kogoro. Kogoro begins saying he is the one to redirect others’ deduction by holding that knife when in his room. Taro was the one to hire Akamatsu to attack Reiko and pretended to be stabbed by her as a self-defense, later, when the plan made to conceal that truth was done and Reiko left with the secretary, Akamatsu changed his outfit one more time just to be killed by him.

Evidence

• Reiko painted a new darker nail polish to hide her murder, so there must be traces of Akamatsu’s fake blood left on her nail.
• He just accidentally reveals his motive without knowing that Takagi, Megure, Reiko and her secretary are hiding somewhere to record it.

Trivia

• During the TV broadcast of the episode, there was a running text reporting about the death of Atsuko Tanaka, who voiced Mary Sera and Chihaya Hagiwara. She passed away on August 20, 2024.
