Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story (本庁の刑事恋物語 ,Honchō no Keiji Koi-monogatari^?) is the 146th and 147th episode of Detective Conan anime.

Situation

Part 1

The Detective Boys are called to the police station to make a statement about the Blue Castle Investigation Case, when they learn that the police are busy trying to figure out who robbed a nearby bank. The man who owns the bank Keizo Masuo has just arrived is wondering if his wife has already arrived to the police station, but Takagi and Sato say she hasn’t.

Finding this strange they call his wife Kayo Masuo, however when Takagi talks to her she says she had no idea that she had to come to the police station. Keizo snatches the phone and talks to his wife, during that moment Takagi had accidentally hit the speaker button allowing everyone to hear their conversation.

Suddenly, Kayo screams shocking everyone, Takagi and Sato drive to her house along with Keizo and Conan who had stowed away. They get to her house, Keizo splits them up he tells the detectives to search upstairs and while he checks downstairs. Conan notices that a window has been cut via a glass cutter, when suddenly Keizo screams they rush to where he is and find Kayo dead in a study next to a exercise bike with a stab wound to her back from a knife. Conan thinks that these two cases are related - did the robbers kill the wife because she recognized one of them? Conan finds that the husband not mentioning his wife's body suspicious despite having the time and ability to notice during the all that time.

Part 2

Conan gives the police small clues and they eventually find out the culprit who killed the wife. They also found out that a robbery took place days ago in Tohto bank, where Keizo is working as the manager.

A bank robbery took place in the Haido branch of Tohto bank. 200 million Yen were stolen (approx. 2 million $ USD).

The killer is Keizo Masuo. Knowing his wife's daily routine, he set a knife hidden on the top of the bookshelf and tied it to his wife's exercise bike with a thin string. The string was wound around the pedal and would eventually pull the knife from the shelf, stabbing Kayo in the process. To establish an alibi, Keizo called his wife from the police station and had her talk to Takagi shortly before she "was attacked". Once the police arrived at the scene of the crime, Keizo instructed Takagi and Sato to check upstairs while he went to the living room where Kayo's body is to eliminate the pieces of evidence. Unfortunately for Keizo, he accidentally pricked his finger while removing the pin used in the crime in order to hide the string inside the bike. If the blood on his finger and the bloodstain on the shelf match, then it will prove that he is the one who set up the trick to murder his wife.

Cornered, Keizo admits his crime, claiming that he and Kayo had fallen out recently thus he decided to kill her. However, Sato correctly deduces that Keizo's true motive is actually to cover his role as the mastermind behind the robbery at the branch under his management.

Motive

The robbery was actually set up by Keizo as he was under financial trouble due to his wife's lavish lifestyle. The plan would have gone smoothly had it not for Kayo happening to visit the bank on that day. While being taken hostage, Kayo recognized the robbers as her husband's friends and not knowing that he was in fact the inside man, which was the reason why the robbers switched hostages. As a result she found a photo album of her husband’s friends, and circled the faces of the people she recognized during the robbery.

Afterwards

Afterward, as Shiratori is being praised by Chief Matsumoto, Sato says that "such matters" were solved by Conan. Shiratori concedes that children notice things they do not. Later Shiratori asks Sato for lunch at an expensive restaurant but is turned down. Once Shiratori leaves Sato invites Takagi to a ramen restaurant, but Takagi is left behind after Megure invites her to join him for a drink. Takagi is moping as the Detective Boys ask about when he's going to take their testimony.

After being taken hostage, Kayo recognized the robbers' identities. She then tried to free herself, prompting Inspector Megure's wife, Midori to offer herself as a hostage since she was at the bank at the time.

When Kayo planned to bring an album containing photos of Keizo's friends to the police, Keizo killed her out of fear as if his friends were to be arrested they would reveal Keizo as the mastermind behind the crime. Two hours later, the two accomplices, who are quietly counting their money, are arrested and both cases are solved at once. Conan comments that in a strange twist of fate, Kaizo had to kill his wife because of the robbery, since it was due to her that he had planned the robbery in the first place.

Trivia

This is the first case of the Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story (series).
This episode, along with Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story 2, would be released with English subs at Anime! on TMS Official Channel Youtube channel in February 14th, 2026 for limited time in celebration of Valentine's Day. It marks the first time these episodes are ever released in North America.
