I'm always going to think Okiya is Akai.

One, Ai always has the 'BO sense' when around him but it seems to disappear in a little bit or after a little while. I think that's because Akai seems to have that feeling, but he's not in the Org anymore, so...

For Haibara's black sense, there was a case before where Haibara hasn't sensed Kichiro Numabuchi's presence. Kichiro Numabuchi was a man in black for a very short time, so we can suspect that she didn't feel her presence because he is no longer a BO member and because he wasn't one for long.

Now, if I take Subaru Okiya's case, Ai Haibara feels his black aura only when he's angry at some criminal (or at least nervous).

I wonder if what Haibara feels isn't in fact hostility. Kichiro Numabuchi wasn't dangerous during Mitsuhiko's case, only searching for a moment of peace, and Subaru has a protective nature toward her (which could be an attempt to make him appear more sympathetic to the reader and less likely to be Bourbon).

The moments when Haibara feels the black auras clearly, that's when she's around psychopaths like Gin, Vodka, Vermouth, Chianti and Korn, all wanting to kill her (she hasn't meet directly Vermouth since she stops to hunt her, except in movie 13).

And for the similarities about Subaru and Akai, Bourbon is said to be Akai's nemesis so, if Subaru is Bourbon, they could share some similar traits (such as being left-handed or provoking the same reaction to Haibara but not for the same reason). Or maybe, in his obsession toward Akai, Subaru/Bourbon became left-handed because he wants to fight Akai as an equal with firearms.

Now, for Subaru's sentence "I've know him for so long ! There's no way I'm mistaken !", if Subaru is Bourbon, that could mean taht he knew Akai since childhood (Akai in the BO wouldn't be "so long"). Maybe they're even brothers (they seem to be approximatively around the same age).

I don't understand why being enemies means you would be more similar than you would be otherwise.

Version 1

Common Objections to Okiya being Akai and their rebuttals

(1) Objections that Okiya is not Akai because...

1a. Akai is dead.

See here for a plausible way Akai could have survived at Raiha pass: http://www.detectiveconanworld.com/wiki/Akai_faked_his_death_theory

If Akai is dead, why do the blood-trails disappear and the body change position when Kir moves away from the truck, and why does Conan react in a subdued manor when Eisuke tells him someone might have died?

1b. Okiya is Bourbon.

1c. Okiya and Akai appeared at the same time so they can't be the same person.

This idea relies on the assumption that the Akai with the scar is the real Akai. Many people in Detective Conan are capable of disguising as others, so it is wise to consider the possibility that a disguise has been used especially when there are suspicious circumstances, like amnesia or inability to speak. There are many rather convincing arguments that Scar Akai is actually an imposter, which are listed here: http://www.detectiveconanworld.com/wiki/Scar_Akai_is_Bourbon_Theory#Scar_Akai_is_not_the_real_Akai

1d. Scar Akai is the real Akai.

See here for a list of reasons Scar Akai is not the real Akai: http://www.detectiveconanworld.com/wiki/Okiya_is_Akai_Theory#Scar_Akai_is_not_the_real_Akai

1e. Okiya is the shadow guy in glasses driving in files 417-419 so he can’t be Akai. (anime spoilers)

There are also two other perfectly qualified candidates who appeared five cases prior: Fusae Campbell and Billy. The explanation of why is here: http://www.detectiveconanworld.com/wiki/Fusae_Campbell#Speculation

1f. What about Okiya being a brother of Akai or something like that?

It is possible Okiya is not Akai, but an FBI colleague or a brother of his instead; however, based on the clues that have been given Okiya and Akai would have to be so similar that it just makes more sense to assume they are the same person rather than assume a separate existence who could be Akai's plot twin.

Okiya and Akai are both left handed and, except for the fox eyes and the straight hair, they physically look alike to the point where Ran feels Okiya is familiar. They also share many of the same tendencies, including "stalking" behavior, alcohol preference, dressing similarly, placing hands in his pockets, and using similar expressions. They also both good deduction wise and have hand to hand combat skills. (Akai was about to take out a hijacker with his hand in the bus jack case.) Also, there is the matter of Haibara's Black Org. sense getting triggered to consider. Akai bothered her because he was in the Organization even though he was a spy. On the other hand, there has never been a case where Haibara's felt the Org pressure in the presence of other FBI agents and murderers of the week. While it doesn't always detect every Black Org operative, the important fact is Haibara's sense only detects Syndicate members, so that would imply that Okiya, like Akai, must have also been in the Org for some reason yet he is also good guy. When then, did Okiya enter and how did he leave? There is the issue of Conan's trust. Even if Akai vouched for Okiya, would that be enough to satisfy Conan's paranoia? It also means that Akai had to inform Okiya all about Conan's gadgets because Okiya knows about Conan's tracking glasses and the detective badges which very few people are capable of figuring out. Conan hasn't used the tracking function at all between Okiya's introduction and the 252 case, and the Detective boys haven't used even the communications function anywhere where Okiya could possibly overhear until the 252 case. There is also the matter of the name puns.

Finally, if Akai has some nearly plot identical friend, I expect that there should be some hints about that person's existence that are separate from the clues deriving from Okiya in order to rule out the theory that Okiya is Akai. Gosho always makes cases solvable, so there should be something. Someone should have mentioned Akai having friends.

(2) Objections that Akai couldn't have the time to prepare the Okiya disguise and other logistics.

Generally, the passage of time in DC is difficult to tell because of the floating timeline; it isn't clear how much time elapsed between Raiha pass and the Kuroshiro case where Okiya first appeared. In the Suspicious Eisuke case which occurred right before Okiya's introductory case, it was stated that Eisuke returned to school finally after being "absent for quite a while" according to Conan. (619 pg 3) Even then, how much time elapsed between "Suspicious Eisuke" and Okiya's introductory case?

2a. Now that Akai is cut off from the FBI, how could he have the resources and get his identity together as Okiya fast enough? (Like a buying a car and renting an apartment...)

Akai's plan to fake his death would have given him at about 24 hours to get things ready before cutting ties. He could have used the time to move cash to a new account for Okiya, or grabbed or made some generic forged papers the FBI had in advance that enabled the agents to get overseas in the first place. He could also contact any connections he has in Japan. As an example, James managed to get Mizunashi Rena in Haido Central hospital on short notice.

Regarding buying cars and renting apartments, it doesn't take that long, especially if one uses cash up front to buy a car or rent an apartment. Someone experienced could get the contracts for the apartment and car done in a day and have the car bought and the apartment rented as soon as various papers get processed which could be by the day after. Gosho has historically taken liberties involving paperwork except when it is necessary for the plot (like passports for the London case). Conan and Haibara had no trouble enrolling in school despite probably needing papers to verify their age (like a birth certificate), vaccination and health records, and the enroller providing proof of guardianship. (Agasa never officially adopted Haibara, and Conan's "parents" left Kogoro with a stack of money.) Also, the police have somehow conveniently avoided needing any copies of identification related to Conan in order to file appropriate documents regarding his involvement in cases.

Clothing can be bought in a day, as can other items like appliances, food, furniture, and books. It would be a very busy few days, but very achievable. It's easier if he has extra time. Also Akai may not be completely cut off from sources of aid. The conveniently timed car accident that brought the police to Raiha pass was part of the fake death plan and based on the timing Conan and Agasa were tied up with the Shiranpuri case and thus unable to assist. The FBI we have met so far don't seem to know Akai faked his death, so it would have to be someone else whom Akai trusts. It is possible the assistants are the two people whom Akai asked to follow Yukiko and the detective boys in the movie pre-screening murder case. These assistants may have also helped Akai with his needs and cover after the fact.

2a1. Then who were these assistants?

They could be completely new characters or known characters. Conan and Agasa were tied up with the Shiranpuri case and thus unable to assist. The FBI we have met so far don't seem to know Akai faked his death, so it would have to be someone else whom Akai trusts. It is possible the assistants are the two people whom Akai asked to follow Yukiko and the detective boys in the movie pre-screening murder case.(files 417-419) Fusae Campbell and Billy would be most likely known character candidates in that case. See here

2b. Akai couldn't have learned all the things Okiya knows fast enough

Some of these things Akai may already have known about before he became Okiya, like the cooking and probably the engineering. We have virtually no info about Akai's private life, nor any information about what he did prior to infiltrating the Organization, so him knowing some engineering or cooking can't be ruled out. Regarding the engineering, graduate student level, especially the lower level, isn't hard to fake with undergraduate level knowledge on the subject.

2c. If Okiya was Akai he couldn't have been at the apartments for long enough.

2c1. Okiya can't be Akai because the child Kaito from the Kuroshiro case had to have known him for a long time in order to observe him enough to invent a nickname for him.

Again, the passage of time in DC is difficult to tell because of the floating timeline; it isn't clear how much time elapsed between Raiha pass and the Kuroshiro case. Also the argument that Kaito couldn't have come up with a nickname falls apart if one considers that Kaito could have been in the habit of giving the tenants nicknames. He would watch a new tenant, and if that new tenant had any distinctive habits, the tenant would get a nickname based on that habit. As Okiya tended for the garden which no one else did prior, he need only do it for maybe a week straight before Kaito pegged it as Okiya's habit.

2c2. Okiya couldn't have been there long enough because the garden looked too nice.

The appearance of a garden can improve significantly in a short amount of time with some care. Watering wilted plants can make them improve in appearance in mere hours, a little weeding and trimming creates an appearance of orderliness, and using plant growth promoters can induce some plants to produce new leaves within a week.

2d. It is too difficult to fake a job as a graduate student in engineering.

Not really. It depends on who you are fooling. Most people that Okiya is going to run across aren't going to ask for a resume, letters of recommendation, and various cross references proving he has the job he claims to. At best they are going to ask where he goes to school, who he works for, and what he researches without doing any background checking to see if what Okiya told him was true. To satisfy this level of questioning, all Okiya needs to be able to do remember his cover story consistently and perhaps have a professor friend who will pretend to have employed Okiya and will cover for him in the case of "Oh, I met one of your students, Okiya Subaru was it?" It would be similar to how James Black called in a favor from the director of Haido Central Hospital who owed him one. If Okiya pretends to be a new graduate student, he doesn't need to have any papers to his name yet as he could still be busy "learning the ropes". If the age of 27 makes him seem too old to be new, all he has to do is modify the cover story slightly and say he took some time off before going back to school.

In terms of knowledge required to fake it, a good grasp of undergraduate level engineering is all that is needed to fake the knowledge required. Most people aren't engineers and thus do not have a good idea of how much an engineer at the graduate level should know. Even if Okiya meets someone qualified, simply having a good grasp of the subject as an undergraduate level is sufficient to be mistaken for a graduate student in my personal experience. Also Akai can fudge a little, like Vermouth fudged when she took up Araide's role as a doctor which, by the way, is far, far harder to pull off because it requires knowing a significant amount of specialized jargon, ability, and a vast array of memorized knowledge about various illnesses and treatments that if gotten wrong, will quickly tip off other doctors.

In terms of cover profession choice, there are easier professions than engineering graduate student to pick as covers which don't require as much background knowledge. If Okiya is Akai, he likely had a specific reason for choosing it.

(3) Objections regarding Akai's acting and disguising abilities or lack thereof

3a. Akai doesn't have any acting skills as far as we know. He couldn't do a good enough job to be Okiya.

Akai already has acting experience: he had to go undercover in the Black Org and convincingly hide his distaste for the Org's activities and the crimes he was required to commit in order to gain his superiors' trust to move up the ranks. That was a high pressure environment where any misstep meant death or expulsion, yet Akai kept in character to the end until when Camel's mistake blew his cover.

Furthermore changing one's voice, personality, and word choice can be achieved with practice. Regarding personality and word choice, acting more polite and courteous is simple; many people in the service industry -especially the Japanese service industry where it is emphasized- do it every day when they come to work. Consistently speaking in a different voice requires more dedicated practice, but is achievable by amateurs.

Other characters in Detective Conan managed to act without significant disguise experience. People without extensive showbiz background who did fine in acting include Kudo Yuusaku during Conan's kidnapping case, Hidemi Hondou hid her true personality from the B.O., Sumiko Kobayashi was stern at first, but didn't drop her act publicly until the school case, Hattori Heizo in the tiger scroll case tricks the culprit and manipulates his son, Akemi Miyano to fool Mouri (it wasn't her personality that dropped, it was her makeup that tipped off Conan), and many many case culprits who act normally and calmly during the investigation while hiding their hate for the victims.

3b. Akai has no experience with disguise.

As no information has been given about Akai's disguise ability of lack thereof, it isn't wise to assume Akai can't disguise. The point is moot though because if Okiya is Akai, the disguise must be relatively simple because Okiya and Akai look pretty similar, and Okiya isn't wearing a mask (Ran proved this by kicking him). A wig or a hair straightening session and dye and a pair of incorrect prescription glasses are enough change Akai into Okiya. The wig or straightened hair hides his characteristic cheekbones and face shape, and the glasses are deeply corrected and force Okiya to squint and hide his characteristic eyes, like the glasses Genta's dad wore in the Boar Deer Scroll case. Anyone could manage this level of disguise.

3c. Akai can't disguise his voice.

Just a quick note to start off with, the manga canonically overrides the anime regarding voices. It doesn't matter how different Okiya and Akai sound in the anime because Gosho had no control over who the anime team picks to voice the characters. Even if Gosho did tell the anime staff Okiya and Akai were the same, and thus should sound similar, there are still limitations on how closely two different people can sound. Kogoro's voice actors are a perfect example: even though they are meant to sound identical, Akira Kamiya and Rikiya Koyama sound different regardless. It would also ruin the mystery if the anime team picked the same voice actor to voice both characters, so that isn't an option. Gosho has yet to reveal any information in the manga about how Okiya and Akai sound, so it isn't canonically possible to tell how similar or different they sound.

Assuming they do sound different in the manga, it doesn't take an acting career to disguise one's voice a little by altering the pitch, tone/inflection, and accent slightly. With dedicated practice, one can keep it up consistently. That's how voice actors do it. Assuming Okiya is Akai, Akai doesn't have to mimic a voice, he just has to make up a voice that is different than his own which is a much easier endeavor. Other characters who have managed to alter their voice without voice changers or acting experience include Kudo Yuusaku, who disguised his voice when he played the role of Night Baron in order to fool Conan (it was a plain mask), the Yokomizo brothers when Juugo put on a wig and pretended to be his brother Sango, and Haibara who altered her voice to sound like an older woman in order to force Detective Yamamoto to back down. Akai may even have more knowledge than normal of the subject if he looked into how Vermouth manages to change her voice after stalking Vermouth for so long with Jodie.

3d. If Jodie wasn't able to recognize Okiya as Akai, then how did Ran?

Jodie was distracted by a mysterious-reappearing-dead-boyfriend-is-about-to-get-murdered crisis and so didn't pay attention to Okiya when he knocked into her. Also, Ran has consistently been characterized as having a "magical intuition" where she just knows things. Examples include the Shiragami case where she subconsciously knew Makoto was not Shinichi, the magicians meeting case where Conan had fainted outside in snow and she feels she must go and check, and the very first case where she somehow sensed Shinichi was not coming back.

3e. If Okiya is Akai, and Ran, after only seeing him three times, thinks he seems familiar, doesn't that mean Okiya's disguise is bad? If so, isn't he stupid for appearing around the Org or the FBI who might recognize them?

Okiya's disguise of changing his hair and adding glasses is simple, but that doesn't mean that it is a bad disguise. It works well enough to give a different impression. Ran didn't actually recognize who he was despite her feelings and neither did Jodie, his FBI investigator ex-girlfriend, although she was very distracted at the time. That's proof the disguise works well enough for casual interaction. Sometimes the simplest disguises are the best because they are the least likely to fail in the long run. Latex masks are vulnerable to simple physical disruption and require materials which have to be stored somewhere (the Kudo house isn't the most private location - Ran and Sonoko's visit proved that), stage makeup - even good makeup - fails in bad weather or smudging, plastic surgery takes too long to set up and heal and leaves a doctor as a witness. Okiya was already in a situation where a more complex disguise would have failed: he was on the receiving end of a kick from Ran.

Why Okiya would risk appearing around the Org and the FBI in disguise is discussed in 4a.

3f. If Okiya is Akai, why doesn't Akai behave more like himself when he is alone or only good guys are around?

Akai's plan was to fake his death while keeping it a secret from even the FBI in a "fool your friends to fool your enemies" fashion - similar to how Akai planned with Camel to return Rena to the Org. If Akai simply planned to keep on the low down away from the action, then a disguise would be sufficient and he wouldn't need to pretend to have a different personality, but this isn't the case. Akai as Okiya chose to stay where there is a high risk that he will come into contact or be observed by people who knew him previously. (See 4a. for why) These people include Haibara, Jodie and the FBI, Ran, and probably most importantly Vermouth, Bourbon, and the Org.

Vermouth, Bourbon, and the Org

Although Vermouth said she would give up on chasing Haibara, Akai wasn't party to that exchange between Conan and the actress. For all Akai knows, Vermouth is regrouping and is waiting to strike again. Even if Conan told Akai about Vermouth's promise, Akai can't rule out the possibility that Vermouth may try to probe Conan because she may suspect Conan helped Akai fake his death during Clash of Red and Black. If Vermouth notices Akai's disguise then Kir is in major trouble. To avoid Kir's and potentially his own death, Akai has a very strong reason to act convincingly different from his usual self around everyone because who knows who Vermouth may be impersonating?

In the same vein, Kir said Bourbon was looking for Sherry so he is another threat that Akai must be aware might be lurking around as well.

Haibara Ai

Ai won't report Akai to the FBI or the Org, so she isn't a risk factor. There's no real risk to Ai finding out he is Shuuichi other than his personal discomfort; however, if there are no drawbacks, Akai may be more comfortable with Ai not knowing his identity. (see 4b for more.)

Jodie and the FBI

As for Jodie, she is a friend of Conan's and because of that there is a chance she may come into contact with Okiya if he stays close to Ai and Conan. Akai seems to think that there is a risk to letting the FBI know he is still alive, otherwise he wouldn't have hidden his plan from his fellow agents in the first place. Perhaps he thinks that the FBI agents couldn't convincingly pretend he was dead and the org might notice. The Org seems to be watching the FBI closely- they knew Camel was involved in a case, Vermouth was able to find Jodie and James Black outside of the police station, and scar Akai -if you subscribe to the scar Akai is Bourbon theory- was able to track down Jodie and Camel. Vermouth and scar Akai both seem to have/be judging if there was a trick in Akai's death by observing the reactions of agents who were close to Akai, so the secrecy seems to have been a good call on Akai's part.

Ran

Ran has only met Akai briefly, but unlike Jodie or Ai, she doesn't know that he is supposed to be dead and it's possible she may say something at an imprudent time or get suspicious and start investigating like when she found pictures behind Jodie's bathroom mirror.

So far, Okiya doesn't said or done anything that would be out of character for Akai while he has been alone. (For an explanation for the spying, please see 4c.) Even when Okiya is alone in say, the Kudo house, he has to consider that the Kudo house is not exactly private. Ran and Sonoko stopped over unannounced once already. Keeping up appearances is a way of being on the safe side, which Akai has motive to do, and it's also good practice for maintaining his disguise in public.

(4) Objections based on motives

4a. If Okiya is Akai and trying to keep his identity secret, why is he risking himself by staying close to Haibara and Conan and getting involved in situations where the FBI and the Black Org are present?

Okiya decided that rather than uninvolving himself entirely, which is little better than actually being dead, he could make himself more useful by protecting Haibara and Conan from the new threat posed by Bourbon, and also looking out for the FBI should they be targeted by some Black Organization plot. Paraphrasing Conan and Ai from the Suspicious Eisuke case, Okiya has to be nearby in order to be able to watch and protect, which is what he is doing.

4a1. He doesn't seem to be protecting Haibara and Conan (anime spoilers)

He is. Examples include catching Haibara when she nearly fell off the dock during the Ikkaku rock case, rescuing the Detective Boys in the 252 rescue code case. He also closely tailed Detective Boys, especially Haibara, after he heard through his listening devices about about some Detective named Sera who has been probing Conan. After hearing on his listening devices that Conan was kidnapped, he quickly whipped up an excuse (extra cream soup) to "coincidentally" visit Agasa's house, so he could help out by offering up his car and other expertise. This doesn't seem like many examples, but Okiya hasn't been in more cases where there was an active need to protect Conan or Ai. He also rescued Ayumi when she had been taken hostage at knife point.

4a2. He doesn't seem to be protecting the FBI

He stopped Jodie from running out into the sights of Chianti who was set up to snipe. Scar Akai likely isn't the real Akai or anyone of the "good side" so Okiya wasn't specifically trying to block Jodie from rescuing the man per say. Again there is only one example because there has only been one case where both Okiya and the FBI were present.

4b. If Akai is unwilling to face Haibara, why would he try to move in with her?

Although Akai stated that he wasn't ready to face Haibara, he decided that his own discomfort was less important than being able to capably protect her by staying as close as possible. There's no real risk to Ai finding out Okiya is Shuuichi other than having to face her and his own guilt over using Akemi. Shuuichi has always been one to put his feelings second to the mission, which in this case is to protect Haibara, so it makes sense that protecting Haibara is more important to Akai than avoiding uncomfortable feelings. That said, if there are no drawbacks, Akai may be more comfortable with Ai not knowing his identity which is why he hasn't revealed it. In her final text message's P.S., Akemi may have asked Akai to look after Haibara should something go wrong.

4c. If Okiya is Akai, why is he spying on Conan and Haibara?

There are two reasons. The first is that Okiya needs to monitor what is going on in order to be able to react to developments in order to protect Haibara and Conan (see 4a). Kir reported that a new agent called Bourbon had been tasked with finding Sherry. Okiya needs to be able to deal with that threat should the need arise. Also Haibara has been put in danger by two unrelated cases, the Agasa kidnapping case where she was going to be blackmailed and the Ayumi kidnapping case where Ayumi was targeted instead of Haibara by coincidence. Even though they aren't Org related, coincidental cases can be threats. The second reason Okiya is spying is to satisfy his own curiosity about the deaging. Akai's former girlfriend's eighteen-year-old sister mysteriously shows up as an elementary school student with a remarkably sharp boy with some unknown reason for fighting the Black Organization who is probably in the same situation. Who wouldn't want to figure out what is going on and uncover Conan's real identity?

(5) Objections based on personality differences between Okiya and Akai

5a. Akai isn't the type of character who would disguise as a domestic and friendly person like Okiya. Their personalities are too different for them to be each other

Akai has always put his emotions second to his mission, so even if Akai didn't want to want to disguise as someone who is polite and congenial like Okiya, Akai HAD to do it whether he liked it or not in order to ensure Kir's and his own safety. The more different Okiya is from Akai, the better (within reason because complicated disguises have a greater chance of failing in the long term [see 3e]) because Okiya purposefully chose to be in a risky situation where there is a high likelihood that he will run across people who knew him. (see 4a)

Additionally, if Conan stumbles across another Syndicate case and accidentally picks up heat like he did during FBI vs. the Org or someone recognizes that suspicious incidents are centered around Beika and Haido wards (like Gin already did), then Okiya - who was living somewhat near to Ai and Conan before, but now is right next door to Ai- is at an increased risk of being noticed. It's all the more reason for Akai to act and appear different.

There even has already been an even more extreme case of someone who didn't want to disguise themselves but did it anyway: Vodka at the Off-season Halloween party. Although he was ordered to wear a costume, Vodka explicitly stated the whole thing was ridiculous. He sucked it up and did it anyway. Even Gin isn't above disguises. He and Vodka apparently disguised to leave the lockers after the footsteps of darkness case because Gin was worried that the "fox who is clever like a detective" called the police. If the Black Org agents like Gin and Vodka can put up with it, Akai can.

What it boils down to is Shuuichi is acting with the goal of trying to create a person who has a different feel than his real self. Trying to label Akai as a certain type of character who wouldn't be willing to disguise because it is (for lack of a better word) "non-macho" isn't valid because we have no idea what Shuuichi's personal life is like; the only side of Akai we have seen is his "hunting the Black Org" business face.

5b. Okiya smiles more than Akai

Not really. If you reread the manga such as in Clash of Red and Black were Akai appears a lot, Akai is often smiling. While many of the smiles could be classified as smirks, he genuinely smiles some of the time when discussing plans with the FBI or Conan. Many of Okiya's smiles could also be considered smirks, but he doesn't smile all that much when he is by himself (unless he is observing someone or thinking).

5c. Conan acts differently around Okiya than when he was around Akai

Conan has never been around Okiya while alone. Except for once, every time Conan and Okiya have had extended contact that we have seen, there has always been a "less-initiated-to-Conan's weirdness" police officer around (Yuminaga, Juugo) or Ran and Kogoro in public, so Conan is not free to act like an adult. The one exception was the 252 case, where it was only the DB, and Conan did not bother to act like a child in front of Okiya. Then again, Okiya had wrapped up the case, so there wasn't much for Conan to say.

(6) Objections on physical differences between Okiya and Akai

6a. Okiya doesn't look like Akai

Yes, he does.

Okiya_Akai_Face_Compare.jpg

6a1. Then where did the line under his eyes go?

The line is hidden by him squinting, basically the line merges with the rest of the eye so it isn't as distinct.

6a2. Then where cheekbones go?

Hiding under his hair. Okiya's hair in never away from his face enough in any picture to tell, even the one on the boat where the wind was directly in his face.

6b. Okiya/Akai is ambidextrous unlike the other.

No, they are both left handed. Please refer to this complete list of hand usage and compare Okiya and Akai to the known left handed Gin. All three characters occasionally use their right hand, but much less frequently than their left and for less important tasks.

6c. Many of people look alike because of Gosho's art style. Also other characters like Gin are left handed. Okiya and Akai being alike is just a coincidence.

"Once Is Chance, Twice is Coincidence, Third Time Is A Pattern" - Taken separately, a person who is left handed or look's like Akai doesn't mean much; however when you consider all the clues at once, you get a pretty strong pattern that can't be discounted as irrelevant.

(7) Objections based on behavioral differences

7a. Akai smokes, Okiya doesn’t.

Akai could be professional enough to drop the habit to further his disguise. If Akai gets caught, he and Mizunashi Rena may die. Okiya could also use nicotine patches to ease the transition.

Also we find out Okiya does smoke in 817.

7b. Okiya is a better detective than Akai

Akai has shown plenty of skill as a detective. Please refer to this list.

(8) Objections based on quotes

8a. If Okiya is Akai, and he knows scar Akai is Bourbon, why would he say that Scar Akai wasn't who he thought he was?

It can be interpreted in multiple ways. Conan knows from what Okiya said that he had seen scar Akai, and Okiya's comments that, "Actually, I happened to see him on that floor. Unfortunately, it seems he wasn't who I thought he was, so I didn't talk to him. I've known his face for a very long time... There's no way I could be mistaken (Manga Volume 67 File 8 Page 16: Silent Clash) His quote can be parsed: "Actually, I happened to see that person who looked like Akai on that floor. This Akai wasn't the real Akai (since I'm the real one), and I didn't confront him. Being the real Akai, this scar Akai is obviously someone else..." Okiya is layering his conversation with a second meaning, confirming there is someone disguising as Akai for Conan's benefit, and Conan is surprised and nervous about the info since scar Akai is someone in disguise, possibly an operative from the Black Organization because they have the necessary information and motives. Gosho deliberately wrote this line ambiguously so it could be interpreted in multiple ways and make Okiya look sketchy.

8b. Okiya seems to be threatening Haibara during the Ikkaku rock case.

"0.12%... That would be the probability that a criminal will succeed in escaping. That's about 1 in every 1000 people; however, of those that fall under the devil's influence, many grow tired of leading a false life and living in fear. If we eliminate those who eventually surrender to the police and those that opt for suicide, the amount that do successfully escape amounts to nearly zero. Are you prepared to endure the feelings of loneliness and pressure as a result of your actions?" — File 666 pg 14

Again, Gosho deliberately wrote this line ambiguously so it could be interpreted in multiple ways and make Okiya look sketchy. Akai is in a similar situation to Haibara, on the run from the Org and hiding from his own comrades as well. He may be referencing himself with this line, basically how hard it is to hide and the emotional toll it takes to deceive your allies.

(9) Objection based on literary devices

9a. Okiya is Akai is too easy; there has to be something more complicated.

Gosho is not one of those authors who piles up layers upon layers of obfuscation to misdirect the reader. Gosho's writing style is pretty simple. There is a trick, you see through it, and the solution is straightforward from there. The trick isn't necessarily easy to figure out and sometimes the clues are difficult to interpret, but once you have it solved, you've done the main job, and the only thing left is loose ends like motives. In most cases, Conan states various things the reader is supposed to think about out loud, like why Vermouth hasn't attacked Haibara yet. Pretty much all the regular cases, the Vermouth arc, and Kir arc follow this pattern.

In the Vermouth arc, one third of the trick was that Vermouth was a master of disguise and a good actor (Directly stated by Conan in File 343, page 17) and thus could be anyone, including a nice man called Araide which was hinted at. The second third was figuring out Jodie was an FBI agent investing Vermouth, which was also hinted at (V33-11.14). The final third was fitting James Black and Akai into the picture, which was pretty much a freebee after the Golden Apple when Akai was stated to be FBI.

The Kir arc was similar to the Vermouth arc except it had a lot more hints. The three parts of the Kir arc were figuring out Eisuke was Kir's brother, figuring out who Ethan Hondou was, and finally figuring out Kir's allegiance from there. All three aspects were actively discussed by characters as a way of letting the reader know what things to think about and there were many easily found hints some of which were directly pointed out.

Gosho always writes solvable mysteries. If there was more to it, then there should be more clues that don't fit. There is also a tendency to overestimate how easy it was to develop a solution to the Bourbon arc. Many Detective Conan fans on the internet perused the manga and contributed to the pool of knowledge about the arc. It isn't nearly as easy for one reader to solve it by themselves as they have to not only correctly identify Okiya, Scar Akai, and Sera, but they also have to figure out how Akai managed to fake his death.

Gosho has a consistent pattern when writing arcs. Characters who turn out to be protagonists are written as overtly suspicious. This was the case with Jodie, James Black, and Akai in the Vermouth arc and Eisuke and Camel in the Kir arc. Doctor Araide/Vermouth was treated as a neutral friendly character, and Scar Akai is the real Akai according to the manga sidebars. Okiya fits into the pattern as an overtly suspicious character and this is likely to be a protagonist.

9b. If Okiya is Akai, why is he is disguise all the time? Even Vermouth took off her disguises once in a while.

It would ruin the mystery of whether Akai is dead or not for one. Second, it could also ruin the mystery behind the identity of scar Akai as well.

9c. Several times we get to eavesdrop on Okiya's thoughts. That only happens for characters not in disguise.

"Posted by Dus on DCTP which originally came from a German forum: http://forums.dctp.ws/index.php?topic=402.msg323248#msg323248

When we hear/read someone's thoughts in DC then they're always in their own voice. Conan thinks with Shinichi's voice (not sure about Ai) and Kid and Vermouth always think with their own voice. When Vermouth was disguised as Araide we never heard her think and neither did we ever hear Kid think when we didn't know his disguise yet (the thought bubbles have given his identity away, in fact). We have heard Subaru's thoughts at least twice so far. "

The manga doesn't make it clear which voice a character is thinking in unless the silhouette of that person is drawn behind the character in question. This isn't really a proof because it's a stylistic difference. If you think about it, it doesn't really mean anything that one character got to "think aloud" and another character didn't. If Araide/Vermouth had an "open thought", it would be done using Araide's speech style so as not to ruin the mystery. Gosho will allow us to hear a disguised character’s thoughts aloud so long as it doesn't ruin the mystery, either by using their natural voices and making it ambiguous who is the thinker (Vermouth during the bus jack), or by using their disguised voice provided the thought doesn't give away the identity of who is speaking and keeps in character with the disguise. A perfect example of the second is Kudo Yuusaku in the kidnapped Conan case. (V6-1) We heard him “think aloud” about noticing gum being in the keyhole because it is in character for both his disguise, Night Baron Black Org member, and his actual self.

A somewhat similar situation goes on for several pages before Haibara disguising as Conan is revealed. She has a thought monologue. (26-03) Kaitou Kid had a public thought while dressed as Kogoro in V30-6.13 which was well before his reveal.

9d. There is a trick to the Char Aznable name: Char Aznable and Casval Rem Deikun used to be strangers, so this implies Okiya isn't Akai.

To explain where this argument came from, in the adaptation of the original Mobile Suit Gundam plot called "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin", little Casval Rem Deikun (the one who will go onto becoming the Red Gundam pilot) meets a virtually identical child named Char Aznable. For reasons you can read about on the Gundam wiki, they decide to switch places. The real Char is mistakenly killed, and Casval keeps going by the alias Char Aznable after that. The argument here is that Okiya and Akai have a similar situation going on.

The “Akai” (meaning red) part of Akai’s name refers to Mobile Suit Gundam character Char Aznable’s nickname “Red comet.” “Shuuichi” is a reference to the voice actor of Char Aznable, Ikeda Shuuichi (who incidentally became Akai’s voice actor too). Moroboshi Dai, the alias Akai used while he was undercover in the Syndicate, comes from part of Char's real name, Casval Rem Deikun, with "Dei" pronounced as "Dai" (ダイ) in Japanese. In Moroboshi (諸星), the first kanji can be broken up into 言者 which when pronounced as げんしゃ (gensho) sounds very similar to the word for "phenomenon" (genshou). The second character (星) means "star". Moroboshi, read as "Star phenomenon" references falling stars or maybe comets. “Okiya Subaru” is a pun on Char Aznable’s real name which is キャスバル “Kyasubaru” (romanized as 'Casval').

The problem is that this theory ignores which character's name is being used for the name pun,; Akai Shuuichi is named after the adult Char Aznable (real name Casval Rem Deikun), not the lookalike dead child Casval "stole" the name Char Aznable from. Akai Shuuichi comes from the "red" of Char's Gundam and Char's voice actor's name Shuuichi. Okiya comes from Casval Rem Deikun, the real name of Char Aznable who goes on to become the feared Gundam pilot. Akai's alias of Dai also comes from Casval Rem Deikun. Basically, Akai and Okiya are both named after the same character - the red colored mobile suit pilot.

(10) Miscellaneous

10a. Okiya can't be Akai because Okiya was the only one who could have informed the Black Organization that scar Akai was in the Beika Department Store.

This assumes that Okiya is allied with the Black Org. If that was the case Conan and Haibara should be dead because of all the incredibly incriminating information that Okiya knows about them. It is unlikely that Okiya reported Akai was in the dept store because the B.O. were already in place by the time Okiya first saw scar Akai. That said, if Okiya were a member of the Black Organization, then he did not try to help out by calling them and giving them information about which exit Akai was going to use. Chianti clearly didn't know which exit scar Akai would leave through, hence her surprise and glee when scar Akai came out the main one. That means that Okiya, despite knowing who was staking out below and the location of the snipers, chose not to contact the Org. members. One could make the argument that Okiya is Bourbon, and he is determined to be the one to kill his hated enemy himself as Gin did say that Bourbon believed no one could kill Akai but him. In that case, if Bourbon was willing to go so far though as to sabotage his comrades' plans by withholding information, then why did he call them in the first place if they were going to take "his" kill?

Finally, Okiya knew the purpose of Conan's plan involving the gift certificates was to distract the sniper and make it difficult to target someone. (704 pgs 14-15)

Okiya: "I see... a gift certificate..."

Conan: "eh?"

Okiya: "I'm not sure if this was the smartest method, but ... seems that the customer's criticism will be even higher now."

If Okiya were Bourbon, he would strongly suspect Conan was trying to prevent Akai from being shot. Yet Okiya takes no action regarding Conan, who is responsible for allowing Akai's escape. If Okiya were Bourbon then Conan and all his acquaintances are entirely at Bourbon's mercy. Even if Bourbon was waiting to make his move, Conan hasn't shown that he has made any preparations to fend off Okiya, and Conan has done nothing to protect anyone around him more than he has already. Conan clearly doesn't regard Okiya as a threat.

10b. Why did Conan panic when he heard Ran was going to Shinichi's house?

Conan would worry because maybe Subaru was out of disguise. He could have the glasses off or have compromising objects around like hair dye/a wig. There could be other objects lying around that shouldn't be seen as well like a gun. Also, it is courteous; I'd want a heads up if someone who didn't know I was here was paying an unexpected visit.

10b1. Then why didn't Conan warn Subaru that Ran was coming?

He did. Okiya checks his phone later while Ran and Sonoko wash their hands. Presumably he got a text message or a missed call.

10b2. The timing of Subaru getting that phone message doesn't make sense!

First we have to consider what order Conan contacted Ran and Okiya. Conan knew the teacher was coming and thus call time would be short. Second, the teacher came in when Conan finished with Ran and Conan learned Ran and Subaru had crossed so there would be no point in warning Okiya after that. This means if Conan warned Okiya, he did so before contacting Ran which makes sense. Calling Ran will delay her somewhat.

So why the delay between when Conan should have contacted Okiya and when Okiya checks the message? There are a couple ways this could be explained.

If Subaru received a text message rather than a voice call, it could have been delayed. Text messages don't arrive right away.

Also, at the time, Okiya was brushing his teeth, and thus his left hand was likely wet/toothpastey from doing so considering the kind of brush he had. Picking up a phone at that time would be inopportune. He was probably also distracted by Ran barging in and how to properly react to her. Ran clobbers Subaru, and he rubs his jaw with his right hand. His left hand was already wet from brushing, and now his right hand is going to have toothpaste spit on it from his face and any that came out of his mouth when he was kicked. Picking up the phone would be really inopportune because both hands are wet and the girls are watching. He decides to finish with his teeth and clean himself up while the girls take a short call from Conan. The girls finish just before Okiya finishes with his teeth (he was paying attention to their conversation and gets a little ding when he realizes Conan is hanging up), so now he has to deal with being polite and introducing himself to them in order to make a good impression and all. They talk and Sonoko asks for Okiya's phone number, and Subaru redirects the conversation to food to avoid having to take his phone out right in front of them. He also uses his deduction about sticky fingers and salt residue to get the girls to go into the bathroom and wash themselves, which gives Subaru the time to check his phone where the girls won't see what's on it. That would explain the time delay.

10b3. Why didn't Ran and Sonoko hear his phone if Conan contacted him first as they came in?

Vibrate mode and Sonoko and Ran's yelling.

Everything below this line is not finalized. They are in need of serious cleanup like proper grammar and such. Please don't quote them, they are only here to give you an idea of what will eventually be posted.

It is possible Okiya is not Akai, but an FBI colleague or a brother of his instead; however, based on the clues that have been given Okiya and Akai would have to be so similar that it just makes more sense to apply Occam's rzor and assume they are the same person rather than assume a separate existance who could be Akai's plot twin.

Okiya and Akai are both left handed and, except for the fox eyes and the straight hair, they physically look alike to the point where Ran feelss Okiya is familiar.

The main objection I have with Occam's rzor is that it could also be used by the writer to mislead the reader. Merging two characters into one entity based of their similarities would have been a crucial mistake during Vermouth's arc where Jodie shared many similarities with her and was the "obvious" suspect.

And, apart of the fact that they are both left-handed and their common taste for Bourbon, they also display strong differences such as Shuichi being an heavy smoker while Subaru isn't. There personalities are also very different and each possess skills that the other hasn't yet to shown (Shuichi is good at shooting, Subaru is good at close combat...).

Even though Shuichi could be "playing" Subaru, their differences are more prominent than their similarities for the Occam's rzor to apply (the Occam's rzor privilegiates the obvious answer as the truth, and I don't think Subaru being Shuichi is that obvious for what we've seen of those characters, despite some similarities), and Subaru could as well be a totally distinct character for what we know until now.

Subaru being Shuichi would also imply that Shuichi is able to disguise himself or to have someone to do it for him. A skill which could have been useful during his investigations in Vermouth's arc, Vermouth knowing his face and the fact he's FBI. If he had the means to disguise, he took unneccessary risks which could have compromised Jodie's cover and safety (during the bus hidjacked case) and the secrecy of the FBI's involvement in a mission to identify and capture Vermouth.

Taking such a risk to expose themselves wouldn't be in the temper of Akai who anticipated and took the necessary measures to prevent Kogoro Mouri's involvement in their war against the BO.

It also means that Akai had to inform Okiya all about Conan's gadgets, because Okiya knows about Conan's tracking glasses and the detective badges which very few people are capable of figuring out.

The recent chapters shows that Akai is spying on Conan's whereabout, thus the possibility of him learning about the spare trade of tracking glasses without anyone saying him is strong. Plus, Shuichi Akai didn't know anything about a spare trade.

Merging two characters into one entity based of their similarities would have been a crucial mistake during Vermouth's arc where Jodie shared many similarities with her and was the "obvious" suspect.

But there are a lot more similarities and clues in Subaru and Akai's case than there were for Jodie and Vermouth. It goes further than appearance and mysteriousness. Okiya and Akai share name puns, Black Org auras, and Conan's trust, and a bunch of other things I have listed.

The differences can be explained by acting and habit change in order to disguise himself. What is important to note is that none of the differences are too extreme such that a dedicated Akai couldn't handle. Quit smoking, use nicotine patches for instance. Also, Akai has shown hand to hand skills- he was going to take out a busjacker before Conan got him. Also, Okiya hasn't had the opportunity to shoot, so it doesn't make sense to assume Okiya can't.

Even though Shuichi could be "playing" Subaru, their differences are more prominent than their similarities for the Occam's rzor to apply

I disagree.

When has Akai been on a mission where disguise would have significantly helped? Most of the time, Akai simply appeared unexpectedly or stayed out of sight of the party he was tailing. On the bus jack case, the FBI weren't trying to capture Vermouth. The bus is a public location with lots of people around. They couldn't. What they were doing was looking for Shiho in order to protect her, which is why Akai mentions the target at the end of the case into his recording device. By the same token Vermouth couldn't attack Jodie. Also, the FBI didn't know Vermouth knew Jodie was an FBI agent. Even if Vermouth saw Akai on the bus, that doesn't make Jodie Akai's ally.
The recent chapters shows that Akai is spying on Conan's whereabout, thus the possibility of him learning about the spare trade of tracking glasses without anyone saying him is strong. Plus, Shuichi Akai didn't know anything about a spare trade.
The problem is Conan and Agasa haven't talked about the glasses and how they relate to the badges as far as we have seen anytime recently. Between Okiya's first appearance and the 252 rescue case where Okiya demonstrated his knowledge, I am pretty sure Conan hasn't used the tracking function of his glasses in any case in Beika (or even elsewhere anywhere possibly), nor have the detective boys used the badges for anything other than communication (unless I'm forgetting something they may not have used them at all until the 252 case ignoring the haunted warehouse where they were merely props). If they haven't been used recently, then why would anyone in Agasa's house need to talk a out loud about them? They already know how they work, and listening devices don't let you see how to use them properly, something which Subaru knew how to do. The mechanism to operate Conan's glasses isn't obvious, so only someone who knows about their existence beforehand could recognize the glasses at Agasa's and figure out how to activate the tracking function. Akai Shuuichi could have heard about the glasses in several ways. The first source is when James Black was kidnapped while he had Ayumi's detective badge. Conan used the badge to track down James Black. James was waiting to meet with Akai before he was kidnapped and drove away with Akai after he was rescued. Akai could have also heard about the tracking function from Jodie when Conan chased after Kir to prevent an assassination. Finally, Akai may also know about them from when Haibara borrowed the glasses to find Conan at the shipping yards in climax of the Vermouth arc. He was present at the time and would have seen Haibara wearing them even though she has never worn glasses when Akai had seen her previously.

I honestly don't think that he's Akai. (But I want to beleave it so badly! T^T)

Just think about how he died, they even had his fingerprints checked. Besides, there is no time to escape, and if he somehow managed to escape, then why was his body still there? This is solid proof!

There is one thing that bugs me though. How were they able to get his fingerprints if his body was burned? Because he put his hand in his pocket! Why did he do that? Was it a coincidence? Did he do it on purpose so that they would be able to get his fingerprints after his death?? And if that was the case, why did he do that? Did he do that so that nobody would belive that he was still alive, and focus on bringing down the org? Did he really sacrefise himself???

I think it's a posebility. If he sacrefised himself, it would only make sence why no one would belive it. (In the real world) Because it's never happened before in the series!

Someone is bound to get killed anyways. This isn't childs play!

---

But if he isn't Akai.. then who on earth is he??? I don't know!!>o<

But wouldn't it be nice if it was a new character? A detective, just like Shinichi, Hakuba and Heiji!:D

That would excplain allot. And maybe, he's a former BO member! That would explain why Haibara reacts to him, even though he hasn't done anything to harm her.

And if he knew this Bourbon ir even was a relative to him/her it would really sound like something Gosho would do. I do belive that he will play a big (or not so big) role in the plot.

The body wasn't Akai's. The fingerprints on the body were compared to the ones on Conan's cellphone which, if I remember well, was touched by the BO member who died during the time Conan checked on the suspects.

Still, the fact that the body in unable to be identified physically, but that the police was able to get his fingerprints, it's clearly not a coincidence, we all agree on that.

the strange thing is why hasn't the boss sent vermouth to infiltrate the police for a status report about akai. If she could infiltrate the FBI then the same would go for the police.

That's why I wondered if she couldn't have taken Takagi's place. The fact that Takagi wanted to keep Conan's phone with the fingerprints and Vermouth's appearance in front of Jodie soon after that are kinda strange.

But Vermouth taking Takagi's place would mean she would have killed him as someone has said. So it's impossible (as Aoyama would never killed him, he's too popular).

but there are others she could have taken place, and not kill them

like in M13

it does not have to be takagii, she could have taken a different character

and the phone was kept as evidence of the man who was killed in the explosion

You've got a point! It is a possebility! I never even though tbout that one!

The 3 suspects all touched Conans cell phone! I totaly forgot about that!

Anyways, I'm glad that there's still hope!

However, I still think that it would be interesting to bring in a new character, like Okiya Subaru! I would actually be prety disapointed if he was Akai.

Do you mean that they planed for all of this even before they started investigating about who was a member of the org???

Is it really possible for a human being to think that far ahead, I wounder??

BTW, there's no need to be picky about how many people touched the phone. I just forgot that one of them didn't. It hapens to everyone! >_>

Manga spoilers 771+

I didn't think about posting this earlier because I figured Okiya already knew Conan was Shinichi after the paper airplane case, but now Okiya know definitely knows Conan is Shinichi for sure because he overheard Haibara talking about Conan using Shinichi's voice to solve a case in 771 on page 11. The discussion between Conan and Ai happened in the same part of Agasa's house where later overheard conversations were. As I assume Okiya hasn't been over to Agasa's house between the two cases, he must have planted the bugs earlier. Last instance we know he was over was during the Agasa kidnapping case.

When Okiya was revealed to be bugging the house, he overheard Conan discussing the Org with Ai, so obviously she's Sherry. If Okiya was an Org member he should have made his move already, but of course nothing has happened.

does conan know that akai knows that Ai is sherry

--- if so, then conan would suspect that akai knows about his shrunk as well. He is way smart for a 7 year old boy, hes always by her side, going as a boy against the BO and more reasons. Maybe he suspected from the beginning but did not know what his real ID is, till the air plain case.--

this was what was i thinking before the 771+ chapter

does conan know that akai knows that Ai is sherry

I think Conan would know because of Akai's story --> he got into the Org by using Akemi to meet Sherry. Since he knows Sherry, and knows Vermouth was after Sherry, but Vermouth went after Ai instead, I'm sure he can put one and one together and figure out Haibara is Sherry, although he may not know how exactly that happened.

I don't know if Conan knows that Akai knows he is Shinichi. (know x3) I bet Conan is keeping in mind that Akai is smart and could probably figure it out if given enough clues. The problem is all the clues Okiya received mostly occurred where Conan didn't hear about them, like Okiya's house search, and "Kinichi".

Also, I am not sure if Conan knows Okiya bugged Agasa's house either.
