I think having the doors open makes everything seem nice and welcoming. Having the pens chained to the counter helps prevent having to replace pens every day. If someone walks in, what are the chances they can steal something with everyone watching? If someone walks in a sneaks out the pen, what are the chances they'll be caught? That's just my reasoning, though I'm not 100% sure.
My question: How did people start considering Native Americans as "tall" when in reality they were shorter than the average person?
