Resolution

Mineto Kanetani reveals that he did it to the victim for cheating on his (victim)'s wife, Shirane. However, Shirane reveals that that he divorced her not because he was cheating, but because he was going to borrow money to start up a business, and if that business failed, he did not want her to go in debt with him. Agasa arrives and reveals that the victim made a full recovery and that he will forgive the culprit if he catches fish for his wife.

Conan, Haibara, and the Detective Boys all revisit the exact same pier many years later, in the episode The Disappearing Fish at Ikkaku Rock. According to Conan, after recovering, the victim, Ejiri Futoshi, became "as energetic as ever." He becomes friends with Agasa and the Detective Boys, due to all of them helping to save his life in the case. He even volunteers to watch over Conan, Haibara, and the Detective Boys and help them in fishing, while Agasa runs an important errand, in a future episode. Also, the fisherman who drove the boat that helped take Futoshi to the hospital, also appears again, where he helps Conan, Subaru Okiya, and the Detective Boys solve a murder case.
