Sonoda did not die from being beaten, but from venom of the black mamba. The culprit who murdered Sonoda is Ryosuke Hasegawa. Sonoda discovered that there are bank employees that had taken the ambassador's diamonds in the basement, which he could do nothing about because the diamonds are illegal. Sonoda managed to identify two of them, Nimura and Sakai, but could not find the one behind them; and as a result, she felt her life was endangered. Therefore, she willingly let that person - who turned out to be Hasegawa - kill her so that Kogoro, who she considered her hero, could capture him.
