Case

Situation

Kogoro was invited by Reiko Mutsu to come to her residence, with Ran and Conan tagging along. They are welcomed by Reiko’s secretary Shinji Inui upon arriving. Suddenly, the four are alerted by a scream, and go to the source to check it out. There, they find a mysterious man threatening Reiko with a knife, but he starts to run away as soon as he sees the four.

Kogoro and Conan chase the man, but he manages to get into the Annex–where Reiko’s husband Taro resides. It is at this point that everyone becomes concerned, as Reiko reveals how weak her husband is, only for everyone to learn that Taro somehow retaliates against the man and kills him.

The man is Takeshi Akamatsu, a rough who will do anything for money. The police initially think that Akamatsu climbed through the wall to sneak attack Reiko following someone's request, but was discovered by the Mouris and the secretary, so he ran away. Unfortunately, he went into Taro’s room and was killed as an act of self-defense.

Nonetheless, he is still taken away for further investigation. Conan suddenly smiles and admits Reiko’s bravery when she was worrying about Taro's well-being. Later, at Taro's room, Kogoro finds pictures in the trash bin, convincing himself that the case has a different culprit upon finding Akamatsu's fingerprints in the pictures.

Kogoro's deduction

Kogoro notices that Akamatsu’s watch was on his left hand, which most likely means he is right-handed. However, the moment Akamatsu attempted to attack Reiko showed the opposite, as he was holding the knife in his left hand–similar to what Taro did to prepare before being taken to the station. Kogoro believes that Akamatsu got angry when he learned of Kogoro’s arrival, so he came to Mutsu residence to attack Reiko, only to be killed by her as an act of self-defense. Taro learned about the incident and decided to cover up her crime by pretending to be Akamatsu.

Moments later, Ran notices that Reiko’s nails in all pictures have different colors compared to what she is using now, thus making Conan understand what truly happened.

The truth

As the sky turns night, Taro is seen looking at portraits before laughing out loud, only to be denounced by Sleeping Kogoro as the one responsible for Akamatsu’s death. In fact, Taro hired Akamatsu to fool his wife into believing that she killed Akamatsu in self-defense, and betrayed him after the plan succeeded. Reiko actually tried to cover her crime by painting her nail with a dark color, suggesting that there is some fake blood that she couldn't wash away. Moreover, he reveals the motive to Kogoro without knowing that his words have been recorded by everyone else, which means he's in big trouble!

Trivia

• During the TV broadcast of the episode, there was a running text reporting about the death of Atsuko Tanaka, who voiced Mary Sera and Chihaya Hagiwara. She passed away on August 20, 2024.
