Kogoro and Conan happens to walk by a famous writer's house. They see patrol cars surrounding the house and meet Inspector Megure and Takagi. Takagi reveals the famous writer was found shot to death in his house. Both Kogoro and Conan check the crime scene with Inspector Megure and Takagi.

The next day, the police and the four suspects come back to the scene. Conan then tranquilized Kogoro. The culprit made a trick to shot the gun automatically, by tying the weapon to a chair with strings, place it in line with a mirror made with aluminum foil from the house next door. The gunshot will react to the light reflected by the mirror and shot the victim. The culprit use this method because it is needed to create an alibi, so the culprit is the one with an alibi, Naoya Akaike. The proof is he pretended to make a dentist appointment and later pretended to cancel it, because if he knew that Tawake will die, there was no point to make the appointment. The motive is that Tawake used all of his apprentices as ghost-writers and Akaike wanted to free everyone from Tawake.
