Situation

Kogoro was invited by Reiko Mutsu to come to her residence, with Ran and Conan tagging along. They are welcomed by Reiko’s secretary Shinji Inui upon arriving. Suddenly, the four are alerted by a scream, and go to the source to check it out. There, they find a mysterious man threatening Reiko with a knife, but he starts to run away as soon as he sees the four.

Kogoro and Conan chase the man, but he manages to get into the Annex–where Reiko’s husband Taro resides. It is at this point that everyone becomes concerned, as Reiko reveals how weak her husband is, only for everyone to learn that Taro somehow retaliates against the man and kills him.

The man is Takeshi Akamatsu, a rough who will do anything for money. The police initially think that Akamatsu climbed through the wall to sneak attack Reiko following someone's request, but was discovered by the Mouris and the secretary, so he ran away. Unfortunately, he went into Taro’s room and was killed as an act of self-defense.

Nonetheless, he is still taken away for further investigation. Conan suddenly smiles and admits Reiko’s bravery when she was worrying about Taro's well-being. Later, at Taro's room, Kogoro finds pictures in the trash bin, convincing himself that the case has a different culprit upon finding Akamatsu's fingerprints in the pictures.
