The Naniwa Serial Murder Case (浪花の連続殺人事件 ,Naniwa no Renzoku Satsujin Jiken^?) is the 118th episode of Detective Conan anime.

In Osaka prefecture, Heizo Hattori is discussing with Detective Toyama about two murders reported in their prefecture. There were no eyewitnesses in any of the cases while they share the same method: A stab wound on both victims’ chest wallet pockets that pierces to their heart.

Meanwhile, Heiji is taking Conan, Ran, and Kogoro to Osaka prefecture to visit under the guidance of a volunteer Osaka officer Yusuke Sakata. It is this occasion that the Mouris gets to meet Kazuha Toyama for the first time, claiming herself and Heiji to be inseparable and warning Shinichi Kudo, whom she mistakes Ran for, not to be in between the two. Heiji has to step in and explain that the person whom he referred to as Kudo with Kazuha is actually “he” and not “she”, thus resolving the misunderstanding. Kazuha reveals that she and Heiji once got stuck to each other with a pair of handcuffs when they were little, and they had to perform activities together until someone broke the handcuffs. Just as everyone is on their way to the next visit location, a body falls from a nearby building right onto their car. Notable things on the scene are: Someone received a call to reach the top of the building in hurry and became an eyewitness by chance, the cause of death is just similar to that of the two previous murders in Osaka prefecture, and a woman who runs away from the scene after she saw the body.

Details of the recent murders in Osaka are revealed to the Mouris, including the two murders Osaka police are handling: Hidetoshi Nagao was murdered in Toyonaka city, Tayo Nishiguchi was murdered in Hirakata city, and the victim of the earlier case this day is Kazuto Noyasu. Sakata then shows everyone a video tape of Sotaro Goshi in an interview of a stunning corruption case that his secretary Hidetoshi Nagao took the blame for and resigned as a result. The actual reason Sakata wants to show the video is actually because Noyasu is actually once Goshi’s personal driver, which explains why some police have reached out to the man. Before Heiji leaves with Sakata to find the man, Kazuha reminds him to always wear “it” along, to which he reassures her that he will. It is revealed that after the accidental tied up incident, Kazuha had used two pieces of the broken handcuffs to make her and Heiji one amulet each, and those amulets have been working out pretty well. Heiji, Sakata, and Conan (who sneaked in) try to find the woman that ran away from the third murder scene, however, when the three finally reach the location, the same thing happened to her.

Eventually, they discover that the victims as well as MP Goji all attended the same driving school and were involved in a fatal accident 20 years prior. Heiji, who makes the discovery, decides to confront the MP. Conan joins Ran and Kazuha who tell him that Osaka Police have discovered the hiding place of a criminal on the run, and that they suspect said criminal, Kiichiro Numabuchi, to be involved in the murders.

Evidence

Yusuke has an uncanny resemblance to his father.
Like the murder victims, Yusuke also adjusts his rear-view mirror before he starts his car, a habit taught to them by Yusuke's father, a driving instructor.

Conclusion

The killer is Yusuke Sakata, one of the police officers. His real name is Yusuke Inaba.

Culprits: Hidetoshi Nagao, Kazuto Noyasu, Tayo Nishiguchi, Sumie Okazaki, Sotaro Goshi, and Ki'ichiro Numabuchi

Yusuke's father Tetsuji was a driving instructor who died in an accident 20 years ago. Six of his students had played a prank on him by plying him with alcohol, and he suffered a fatal car crash. The students involved in the fatal prank were the four murder victims, MP Sotaro Goshi, and the escaped convict Numabuchi. They had done so because he was always strict with them and they hated that, all they wanted to do was scare him a little not kill him.

Sakata says he had always wondered about his father's death, he was usually a very careful driver. When he stumbled upon Numabuchi after he had escaped from prison, the latter got frightened and asked "Instructor Inaba" immediately for forgiveness, confusing Yusuke with his father. Yusuke heard the true story behind his father's death and forced Numabuchi to stay in the hut in the forest, planning to take revenge on the other five students before eventually framing Numabuchi for the murders, and making his death look like a suicide.

Culprit: Kiichiro Numabuchi

When he was located in a shack outside of Osaka, Kiichiro Numabuchi lost it and attempted to stab the closest person with a knife, then run away. Ran Mouri was said "closest person", but Conan jumped in front to block the blow. The knife caught on Hattori's good-luck-charm which he lent Conan earlier; Conan was in pain and out of breath, but after resting a little he was fine.

Attempted Suicide

Location: Near the shack

Victim: Yusuke Sakata

Age: 26 years old

Cause: Shooting in the right temple

Sakata's next target was supposed to be Sotaro Goshi, but by then, Heiji had realised he was behind the murders and confronted Sakata with his findings in the shack used as Numabuchi's hideout. Sakata tries to shoot himself after confessing to the murders, but only to be stopped by Heiji.

Arson - Accident

Victims: Heiji Hattori and Yusuke Sakata

Age: 26 years old (Yusuke)

Cause: Gunshot wound (Heiji) and burnt alive

Culprit: Yusuke Sakata

When Sakata tried to commit suicide, Heiji wants to stop him and a stray bullet hits him in the stomach. In panic, Sakata blindly shoots at things in the shack, one of the projectiles hits a gas tank and the shack catches fire.

Both Heiji and Sakata manage to escape blaze and are taken to the hospital, however before being taken to the hospital Sakata talks to Ginshiro Toyama about everything that’s happened. When suddenly Sotaro Goshi tries to attack Sakata after learning he had killed his friends and was after him as well, but is stopped by Ginshiro who states that they need to have a conversation about his past, leaving Goshi hanging his head in shame.

Aftermath

Heiji is rushed to hospital, accompanied by a panicked Kazuha, Ran and Conan. He says that he couldn't just let Sakata die as "some idiot told me once that a detective who doesn't do anything when a culprit, confronted with his deductions, commits suicide, is just as guilty of murder", and Conan is stunned that Heiji remembers him saying that. Heiji closes his eyes again, exhausted, and Kazuha starts to cry, believing he is about to die. Her sobs wake an angry Heiji up, he yells that he was just trying to sleep and she should stop being "so noisy". Smirking, Kazuha "accidentally" leans over Heiji and digs her elbow into his bullet wound. They bicker all the way to the hospital.

Manga to anime changes

In the manga, Heiji remarks that the trick that was used to make the corpse of the third victim fall to the ground is the same as the one used in a case that Kogoro (or rather, Conan) solved before. This part was removed in the anime.

Trivia

This is the only episode where Masato Sako voiced Ginshiro Toyama, as he developed tongue cancer in July 2000 (thus cancelling all his acting plans) and later passed away on January 11, 2003.
In the English Dub, for unknown reasons the last scene showing Hattori in the ambulance was cut out and never shown.
These episodes mark the first use of the soundtrack from The Fourteenth Target.

In a restaurant, they run into Kazuha Toyama, Heiji's childhood friend, who appears to be jealous of Ran, asking her if she's "that Kudo girl" that Heiji keeps talking about and telling Ran to back off, because Heiji and her have been "joined by steel" for ages. Ran laughs and explains herself and the two girls hit it off. After finishing their meal, Kazuha joins them on their exploration of the city, but, as they leave the restaurant, a dead body falls from the roof of the building, hitting Kogoro's rental car.
