The group gets distracted by a sudden draft of wind that places a leaf inside of Kogoro's clothing which Ran mistakes as a bug. While Kogoro and Ran are trying to get rid of the leaf, Conan notices the package thief running past with the package in hand trying to leave by elevator. The elevator shows the thief stops on the fourth floor and Conan gives chase via the stairs but eventually loses the thief when Conan reaches the fourth floor. Given that the entrance to the apartment building locks automatically and the thief was wearing sandals, the trio concludes the culprit most likely is a resident of the apartment building. | |||

Later, the three go to find residents who knows anyone matching the description of the package thief. They stumble across the resident of room 402 Sumiyoshi who suspects the thief may be his neighbor Nobuhiro. Unable to get a hold of Nobuhiro by knocking on his door, Kogoro asks Sumiyoshi if he can borrow his balcony to try catch a glimpse of the suspect. To Kogoro's shock, he instead finds Nobuhiro dead on the floor. | |||
