Wealthy Daughter Murder Case (資産家令嬢殺人事件 ,Shisanka Reijō Satsujin Jiken) is the 39th and 40th episode of Detective Conan anime.

It adapts the Wealthy Daughter Murder Case^{(V9-F7~V10-F1)} of the original manga. The Part 1 was first aired in November 25, 1996 and Part 2 at December 2, 1996, while the remastered version was aired in August 19, 2017 and August 26, 2017 retrospectively.

Part 1

Conan, Kogoro and Ran are at a Birthday party for Reika Yotsui, who is the daughter of the Yotsui group president of which Kogoro is a guest of honor. When Mr.Yotsui tries to introduce Kogoro to everyone, Kogoro unknowingly embarrasses himself in front of him. In fact, he and his family were invited to the party as a way to show gratitude for finding Reika’s dog. They meet with Takashi Ichieda, Yuji Nikaido, Takuya Mifune, Osamu Gojo and Masashi Rokuda, all of whom are Reika's friends.

Conan leaves the ballroom to use the bathroom, it is there he notes that the hallway lights are off. Once he is able to find a bathroom, he tries to turn on the lights in the bathroom they do not turn on as well. He is then found by Yotsui’s housekeeper Yone Nanao and guided to one with functional lights. She also mentions how weird it was when the lights didn’t work despite being changed just a few days prior.

As everyone is about to leave the party, however, Yotsui’s family personal driver comes to inform them their car has been deflated. Moreover, except for Kogoro’s old rental car, every single one in the lot has been deflated, forcing them to either go home with the intact one or stay at the building. Takashi, Yuji, and Osamu also decide to stay with Reika with Masashi staying to protect Reika from the young men while Mr. Yotsui agrees with him. Initially, Kogoro decides to leave due to everyone else leaving, but Ran stops him from going to the car and tells him that they won't leave until he sobers up. Takashi wants Kogoro to stay because he and Masashi want to hear about the case the great detective has solved. Reika suggests that everyone can play cards as a means of entertainment, but Takuya refuses so, insisting to drive Kogoro and his group home. Reika becomes angry at Takuya, saying he is one of the candidates to be a suitor for her. He states that he is only present for his business with Yotsui’s group, and has no interest in Reika herself, which makes Osamu, Takashi and Yuji happy because it means one less rival for each to worry about. Takuya receives the key Kogoro gives him to take his group home, but it is slapped out of his hand by Reika. Reika then explains that he or anyone else should obey her or she would “starve” them. Reika leaves to change her clothes.

During the card play, Yuji reveals to Ran that he, Takashi, Takuya, Osamu, Masashi, and Reika knew each other because they were in the same yacht club. Yuji remembers they once sailed to many islands, but Takuya disrupts the atmosphere by mentioning an accident two years ago, to which Takashi tells him not to speak of it ever again. Suddenly, Masashi questions what took Reika so long, to which Takuya replies it is better without her because of her selfish attitude. After thirty minutes, she is still not present, which makes Masashi worried as Yone agrees to check up on Reika when he asks her to. As Masashi goes to search the other rooms in the house with Takuya, Yuji and Osamu also coming along as well. They are unable to find Reika in the house, Takashi thinks that she got lost in the forest behind the house. Kogoro states that everyone should go looking for her and to split up so that more ground can be covered, with Takuya saying that it is a nuisance.

As everyone is searching for Reika, it begins to rain causing everyone to head back inside. Kogoro, Ran, and Conan begin to head inside. They are about to go inside when they see Nikaido near a well. Kogoro tries to wake him up, thinking he is taking a nap.

Murder

Suspects: Takashi Ichieda, Takuya Mifune, Osamu Gojo, Masashi Rokuda, and Yone Nanao

After Ms. Reika disappeared and everyone went to look for her, the corpse of Yuji Nikaido was found by Kogoro, Ran, and Conan drowned in the fountain outside.

Moments later, Ran becomes tired and decides to have a nap. Everyone else decides to find Reika's whereabouts. Suddenly, the lights are out once again.

Conan realizes Ran is alone when everyone else tries to find the culprit, whom they believe to have broken the window to run away, so he searches inside and manages to save her in time.

Attempted Murder

Ran was drugged by the culprit who put sleeping pills in her coffee. She was then carried by the culprit to a kitchen and had her face forced into a water-filled sink. The culprit left fled after Conan heard a suspicious sound and came running.

Before Conan can crack the case, yet another victim is discovered.

Time: Between 5 and 6 am

Ms. Reika disappeared after dinner, and her soaking wet body wasn't found until much later. She was found drowned, leaning face down over a bathtub full of water.

Part 2

When a beautiful heiress is murdered on her birthday, Conan springs into action to solve the baffling crime. The painful past of every suspect must be brought to light. Opening these old wounds is the only way to bring the killer to justice.

The killer is Takashi Ichieda. Two years ago Mrs. Yone's granddaughter, Yaeko, died by drowning when she went searching for Reika and Nikaido, who were stranded on a small island in the sea. It turned out they took her swimming supplies and left her to die; Ichieda noticed the odd situation when Yaeko's body was found and asked them about it, but they denied everything and said they had not even seen Yaeko. Gotou had also asked them about Yaeko, but he didn't suspect them at all. Everyone else believed that Yaeko had simply drowned, with her grandmother even saying that she sacrificed her life to rescue Reika and Nikaido.

Ichieda, who was in love with Yaeko, kept his bad feelings to himself until Reika's 24th birthday. After isolating the group in the mansion, he first kidnapped Reika and kept her hostage in one of the bathrooms, then bound and gagged her inside a covered bath tub, getting everything ready so she would slowly drown automatically. The proof of this is Reika disappeared around 10 PM but she wasn't killed until 5 or 6 AM which means that she was left alive for 7 to 8 hours before her death. Second proof is her clothes, they couldn't possibly get that wet, no matter how much she struggled. Third proof is the duct tape and rope marks on the corpse, it is odd that she was restrained with both rope and duct tape when she had already had been restrained with rope. Ichieda switched the faucet with the shower so that he could fill the bath quietly. To prevent somebody finding the corpse in the tub, he burned out the bulbs beforehand to keep people from coming through and using the bathroom. Ichieda checked the bathtub himself and told the others that Reika was not there to fool them. He then created his alibi by staying with Kogoro during the murder. As soon as he could he confronted Nikaido, and when he admitted his share of guilt, Ichieda drowned him outside with his own hands and left his lifeless body there.

To throw people off again, Ichieda used the air conditioners and microwave to cause the lights to turn off by themselves. First, he set all the air conditioners to turn on simultaneously at a set time using their remote controls. Then, he set the microwave so that it would turn on at the same time as well. When the time came, the overuse of electricity within the mansion would would suddenly spark and would cause the breaker to overload causing the lights to go out. The proof is that the remote controls were still displaying the time that they were all set to 12:30, which is when the lights went out. Also, at the same time Conan heard the bell of the microwave. The microwaves there operate with dials so they will still work even without electricity. Another piece of evidence is when Conan touched the microwave, it was still warm. Lastly, a little while before the lights went out, Ichieda went into the kitchen with Conan and Kogoro to search for Reika. As they were leaving the kitchen he doubled back and set the timer on the microwave when no one was looking.

After turning off the lights, Ichieda broke a window in the dark and made it look like the killer ran away so that they would give chase. He pretended to get lost in the forest and then went back to the mansion and took the unguarded Ran to the kitchen and tried to drown her. He even drugged her beforehand so that she wouldn't be able to struggle. When he put the pills in, he could have turned the cup, moved the spoon, or done any number of things to identify the cup: all he had to do was avoid it. Also, it didn't matter who took the cup: It was just a coincidence that Ran was the one who took the drugged one. The attack on Ran wasn't intended to be fatal, he only needed a witness to throw suspicions off himself, by making everyone believe that the murderer was an outsider, and give fake evidence that the murderer had killed Reika in the same fashion.

Few hours later, a still restrained Reika drowned in the tub. Ichieda pulled her lifeless body out of the bathtub and left it next to said tub for everyone to find. The proof that only Ichieda could have committed the murder is the water on his undershirt. All of the suspects in fact have water on their shirts. However, the water on Goujo's sleeve is from when he washed his hands and the water on Mifune's collar is from when he washed his face. On the other hand, Ichieda's arms on his shirt had gotten soaked. This is proof that he took his jacket off first before water got on them. He took off his jacket so that it wouldn't get wet when he committed the murder. His elbows are wet because he rolled his sleeves up to take Reika out of the bathtub.

Yaeko went to save Reika, but did not know that Yuji was there as well as she only brought supplies for one other person. The two then took her supplies and left her to die on the small island that they were trapped on where she later drowned.

Ichieda admits that he killed Reika and Nikaido and tells the others about how they murdered the sweet and gentle Yaeko, who had gone to help them but was repaid with abandonment and death. Before he murdered them he asked them to tell him the truth they both confessed to murdering Yaeko. He then proudly says that the two deserved to be murdered for what they had done... but Mrs. Yone angrily calls him a fool. She then goes to Reika's corpse and closes her eyes, saying that even when she cannot forgive the two victims for what they did to Yaeko, she belives that no one deserves to die violently because whenever that happens, someone else will always cry and grieve and no one should feel what she felt, no one.

Manga to anime changes

• In the manga version, Reika announces to her father and the guests about her intention to get married to one of the suitors at the party. This scene is removed in the anime.
• Reika wears a white coat over her dress when she is about to leave the house with her father after the party had ended in the anime.
• Some of Reika's expressions and mannerisms were changed to be less malevolent, leaning more toward being childish, compared to the manga.
• In the anime, after Yone put a blanket on Ran who is sleeping on a sofa, she looks at Ran's face and is reminded of her granddaughter Yaeko.

• In the anime, Ichieda doesn't drink the coffee served by Ran and Yone, as he has previously drugged one of the cups.
• In the anime, Conan states through Kogoro that Ichieda simply avoided the drugged coffee by not drinking it, compared to the manga in which he speculates that Ichieda must had marked the cup with a spoon or rotating/placing the cup in a recognizable position.
• In the anime, after Yone is angered by Ichieda's cruel and callous attitude and saddened by Reika's passing she also closes the lifeless Reika's eyes in sign of paying respect to her.
