Conan and the Detective Boys were hiking in the forest and were going to visit a lighthouse when the storm bursted. They decided to hide under a the solar panels of a greenhouse and have been spotted by the greenhouse's manager who brought them to the nearby Otaguro mansion. They were welcomed by Saburo and Yoshimoto, the maid. They were then informed about the head of the family, Otaguro, who have had early encounters of a ghost that appeared like a yellow glowing light. Just after, the mysterious glowing light in question appeared and frightened the Detective Boys and it was interrupted by the arrival of Hideto Amemiya who led them visit his lab and explained them the past accident of the late Mrs. Otaguro.

The reason is money because he had many debts and Nobuteru was very strict with money so he decided to kill him to get inheritance. Amemiya used the fact that Otaguro thought their was a ghost so he could change his voice into Mrs. Otaguro's voice to incite Yoshimoto to kill him because of the events two months ago when Hana-san killed accidentally Chieko Otaguro by loosening her wheelchair's brakes.She just wanted to annoy Chieko because she was accusing her of stealing brooches and necklaces. Amemiya was at the crime scene so he decided to perpetrate his crime using this fact. He then purposely placed open the cabinet so when Yoshimoto would go clean his room, she could retrieve the poison and kill Otaguro. Conan later switches the poison contained in Otaguro's tea for salt. The ghost Nobuteru saw was in fact the spotlight from the lighthouse who had been reflected by the solar panels of the greenhouse on Otaguro's bookcase. The wheelchair moved because there was a breeze coming form a crack in the wall and also because the brakes were broken. The door would move at the slightest vibration because the latches were old and weak and the house was built fifty years ago At night, when Conan and the Detective Boys were going to leave, Conan asks the greenhouse's manager if he could let the solar panels stay longer so Otaguro would be happy to see his "wife's ghost" again.</spoiler>

According to forensics, this would work only upto a range of 30 meters. So, the culprit had to be close to the bomb to speed up the timer. Hiroyuki Tomonaga attempted to flee with the remaining stolen money but was caught by Conan (via Kogoro). He was caught red-handed when he blurted that Hirukawa must have been dead, which was not broadcasted on the news. Conan did not understand when Tomonaga, who had forgotten about the solutions to the riddles in the picture book, suddenly started talking about the various illustrations in it. This was when he also realized that the culprit wanted Hirukawa's suicide and the illustration in the book to overlap. Hirukawa was, however, saved thanks to Kogoro's (Conan's) reasoning and plan to send Takagi and Chiba before the Police to save him, which they successfully accomplished in the nick of time.

This was contradictory to the fact that the 'proof' was merely a photocopy, as it does not make sense for a proof to be misaligned. The author of the book, Kenichi Imai tried to enter a book contest when a rumor about his half-brother, identified as Takuji, was posted to the internet causing him to withdraw the contest. After his death, Hiroyuki have tried to publish the book, however the print proof was retrieved by his half-brother, who attacked him to make the attempt successful.

The bomb was found and still incomplete.
