Kogoro and Conan happen to pass by two police officers, Takagi and Chiba, investigating the scene of a murder.

The reason Takagi and Chiba know the exact time of the crime is because the photographer, Takeru Motomiya, happened to capture the moment when the victim was struck, and took a picture from it.

There are four suspects:

The photographer. He hid somewhere after taking the precious picture.
Toshiki Morita, a Beika University associate professor. He argued with the victim when the person refused to let Morita collect samples of the moss species that happened to grow in the tea room’s garden.
Hideaki Okawa, Jun Komada’s apprentice. The police and Kogoro perceive that Komada not promoting Okawa to master is a reason to kill Komada.
Masato Kijima, the forest caretaker. He noticed that the woods were quieter than usual the time when Komada was killed.

While the forensic officers are analyzing the photo, Conan suggests Kogoro, Takagi, and Chiba to investigate some other information from the photo, based on the fact that Motomiya's camera is a digital camera. At the same time, Okawa appears, and Takagi questions him about the victim's past conflicts. He seems to be hiding something, even though he says it was a conflict with Morita. When the four return to the hotel to continue questioning Professor Morita, they have to chase him again. It turns out that he has taken a few moss samples from the garden of the teahouse, and he is afraid he would be suspected because of that action.

Takagi and Kogoro are thinking that Morita’s action further improves that he is the murderer while the four are walking in the forest. Suddenly, Kijima counters that Morita might steal moss, but he is not a bad person. He shows them a video footage showing the argument between Okawa and Komada.

The four continue walking down the street until Motomiya takes a perfectly clear photo of them at the end of the road, in contrast to the one he had taken at 6:29 in the morning. Explaining this, Motomiya recounted the process by which he retrieved the photo: He cropped the image, then he used exposure compensation to make it brighter, and increased the contrast. After looking back at the photo, Motomiya notices something in the culprit's hand. This object’s color is quite similar to jade, causing the group to suspect that Okawa murdered his master.

However, Conan feels that something is off, and decides to investigate the scene once again. There, he meets Kijima again, who wonders why the kid is wandering around the crime scene. Then the two have a conversation about Kijima's forest caretaker job. While Kijima is saying that some things appear natural but are not, and vice versa, Conan suddenly realizes something about the scene, but what exactly is it?

Trivia

The "Urasawada School" (裏沢田家 ,Ura-Sawada-ke^?) of traditional tea ceremony is a reference to the real-life "Urasenke School" (裏千家 ,Ura-sen-ke^?) of tea ceremony and a pun on screenplay writer Yoshio Urasawa's name.
