Case

Situation

Kogoro is hired by a woman rumoured to be the first female prime minister named Reiko Mutsu to discuss something, with Ran and Conan following him as usual. They are welcomed by her secretary named Shinji Inui when they arrive. Later, when the family goes out to check after hearing Reiko’s scream, they see a mysterious man holding a knife who is later running away.

Conan and Kogoro chase after him but he manages to get in the room of Taro, who is Reiko’s husband. Surprisingly, Taro somehow manages to defend against that mysterious man but results in that man’s death.

The mysterious man’s identity is confirmed to be Takeshi Akamatsu. Police investigation shows that Akamatsu apparently had climbed through the fence to sneak in to attack Reiko but he was discovered by Mouri’s family and the secretary as well, so he tried to escape but he got in Taro’s room and somehow got stabbed by him, leading to his death. They add that Akamatsu is a rough who will do anything for money, which implies to us that he was hired by someone to attack Reiko for money. The problem was why couldn’t he just escape when the plan failed instead of going to the outhouse basement, besides it’s summer and why is he using the fireplace to warm himself up just for listening to the music while working. This is explained by the secretary and Reiko as he is a mentally weak person and usually forgets things when he is shocked.

Nonetheless, he is still taken away for further investigation under everyone’s understanding, even though it was self-defense. Suddenly Conan smiles and admits Reiko’s bravery when she was worrying about Taro’s well-being. Later, when they are at Taro’s room, however, Kogoro finds some pictures that contains Akamatsu’s fingerprint in the trash bin, which lets Kogoro deduce the truth about the case, but is it true?

Kogoro's deduction and the motive he believes

Kogoro deduces that the mysterious man we saw at the beginning was Taro in disguise, because there is a watch in Akamatsu’s left hand, implying that he is right-handed, while the man they saw earlier is left-handed as he was holding the knife with his left hand, like what Taro did earlier when trying to clean up his room. And the fireplace he lit up was meant to burn the disguise costume, thus warming Akamatsu’s body and messing up the investigation.

The motive Kogoro believes was to protect the real culprit, who is Reiko. The reason she killed him was for self-defense when Akamatsu got angry upon hearing that Kogoro would be here, Taro later knew this so he tried to protect her by doing what Kogoro is deducing. She is taken later, but Conan notices something strange around. Has the case ended already?

The truth of the case

At night, Taro looks at the portrait of him, his wife, and Mr.Mutsu, and suddenly laughs out loud, only to be revealed as the true culprit of the murder by Sleeping Kogoro. Kogoro begins saying he is the one to redirect others’ deduction by holding that knife when in his room. Taro was the one to hire Akamatsu to attack Reiko and pretended to be stabbed by her as a self-defense, later, when the plan made to conceal that truth was done and Reiko left with the secretary, Akamatsu changed his outfit one more time just to be killed by him.

Evidence prove that Taro is the culprit

• Reiko painted a new darker nail polish to hide her murder, so there must be traces of Akamatsu’s fake blood left on her nail.
• He reveals his motive without knowing that Takagi, Megure, Reiko and her secretary are hiding somewhere to record it.

Trivia

• During the TV broadcast of the episode, there was a running text reporting about the death of Atsuko Tanaka, who voiced Mary Sera and Chihaya Hagiwara. She passed away on August 20, 2024.
