Situation

Murder

Location: Annex Victim: Atsushi Tarumi Age: 22 years old Cause of death: Slash wound Suspects: Mineo Omotani, Noriyuki Doguchi, Takashi Kotegawa, and Masamachi Hakamada Heiji invites Conan to his kendo tournament, but a drunk man named Atsushi Tarumi is found dead in the storage room. Heiji comes to investigate only to find that the body had somehow been moved to the shower room without anyone noticing.

Kotegawa tricks Atsushi believing the he killed the person before the murder.

After a thorough investigation, Heiji reveals the culprit to be Takashi Kotegawa, a friend of Tarumi. Heiji explains that in the storage room, Kotegawa drugged Tarumi into a drunken slumber and put red paint on Tarumi to imply he was killed. After everyone leaves, he sets the scene to create the idea Tarumi committed a murder in his drunken frenzy.

Tarumi heads for the shower room, suited in Tsuba Zeriai, in order to hide what he believed to be blood from the murder where he is then killed by Kotegawa. As evidence, Heiji reveals that the mannequin that was used to trick Tarumi into believing he committed a murder was covered in red paint.

Kotegawa confesses that Tarumi along with other members of the Shinnai University kendo club pushed a freshman during an initiation ceremony too hard and caused his death. Tarumi threatened to publicly release the information and discredit the team if they sought to kick him out (as he was the one directly responsible). Kotegawa decides to selfishly kill him because he refused to have his public image in the kendo team ruined. He then attempts to kill Heiji as well with another katana he brought but is beaten up by him. After Kotegawa is arrested, Heiji and Conan explore the town.

Makiyoshi Wakisaka, Shigehiko's grandfather who got murdered by Hirano, Yuji, Maho, and Arihiro was the motive for the murder.

After investigating thoroughly, Heiji and Conan conclude the murderer to be Shigehiko Wakisaka, one of the tour guides at the castle who committed the murders through the use of self-destructing flashlights. Wakisaka confesses and reveals that he was murdering his fellow tour guides who murdered his grandfather thirteen years ago in search of a legendary treasure in the Osaka Castle.

Arihiro Kasuya, who was also involved in a series of armed robberies to locate this treasure confesses to having colluded with the other victims and prepares to kill Heiji but is apprehended by the police.

Wakisaka then melancholically reveals to Kasuya that he discovered too late that his grandfather already knew that the rumored signs of the treasure were a fake. His grandfather never exposed the secret because he could not bear to break the hearts of his colleagues who were enjoying themselves so much. Arihiro is dumbstruck that he wasted all his years searching for treasure and truly killed a dear friend to him.

Heiji is upset upon realizing that his father's behavior was just to get Heiji angry use him as bait. He did send Otaki out to look out for Conan and apologized later, although Heiji vowed to make his father pay, if he did such a trick again.

Continuity

• In this case, Heiji showed Kazuha the scar that she gave him on Bikuni Island, which is referring to And Then There Were No Mermaids case, when she stabbed his hand to try and make him let go of her so that he will not die too, when he was hanging onto a tree branch over a cliff.
• When Kazuha asked Heiji if he still has his lucky charm, it is referring to the amulet that he placed around Conan's neck in The Naniwa Serial Murder Case which saved his life, when Conan was almost stabbed, and at that time, Hattori has been having nightmares where Kudo got killed, so he gave him the amulet to protect him.
• In The Night Before the Wedding Locked Room Case, the amulet had been stated to be back in Heiji's possession again.

Trivia

• This is the third episode to use digital animation.

• The first episode to use digital animation is The Cornered Famous Detective! Two Big Murder Cases and is used again in The Gathering of the Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaitou Kid. Traditional animation will still be used in every episode until Chinatown Deja Vu in the Rain.

• Although Soshi Okita is from the Yaiba manga, its animated series, Kenyuu Densetsu Yaiba ended on April 1, 1994 with the with the "Kaguya Arc," so this case is his first animated appearance ever.
