Case

Situation

Officer Takagi comes back to the police department after an all night stakeout and gets reprimanded by Officer Sato for his poorly appearance. The other male policemen gets jealous and find out Shiratori has found another woman who looks exactly like Sato: Sumiko Kobayashi. When Detective Boys and Kobayashi-sensei go to see the fireworks, Kobayashi-sensei gets left behind and overhears a quarrel and sees the figure of the culprit run away in the shadows and sees the stabbed victim.

Conan hurries to the location where he hears Kobayashi scream. Then they are questioned as witnesses by the police, along with the three suspects. All the suspects has the motive to murder the victim: Kagitani, because the victim callously called her late mother's ring that she pawned as a "worthless item"; Takimoto, because she was tricked into buying a fake antique plate which was revealed to be a cat's plate worth only 300 yens; Kodama, because the victim repeatly ordered him to return the money that she loaned him. After going to the restoom, Kobayashi overhears the male policemen saying Shiratori was part of the "Miwako Sato Ultimate Defense Line" head and that Kobayashi is a replacement for Sato.

Shiratori has Kobayashi listen to the three culprit's voices and has determined none of them was the voice that shouted out. She then storms out of the police station, coldly refusing Shiratori's offers to escort her. (Chiba does so under Shiratori's request.) Shiratori doesn't understand why is she so angry, so Haibara explains that Kobayashi must have seen Sato and heard the rumors that Shiratori is only settling for Kobayashi in place of Sato (when he isn't); she adds that Kobayashi must have felt really depressed and hurt. The situation is made even more awkward when Sato and Takagi arrive to the scene... because Sato wants to meet Kobayashi and show her support for Shiratori's "bid" to her affections.

Shiratori attempts to rectify the misunderstanding and confronts Kobayashi in the school, revealing how they met many years ago in a bookstore when confronting a pair of thieves. Kobayashi is unable to remember the event, however, and replies it must have been Sato after all, running away into the school since she still has work to do. The children tell Shiratori not to give up, and decide to help him catch the culprit so he can recover Kobayashi's favor.

Later that night, at the school, Kobayashi receives a phone call from a supposed ex-pupil of the school, asking to meet her at the music room since he feels nostalgic and wants to see it again. Kobayashi is the only teacher around and accepts, then recalls that the person didn't tell her his name and that the music room was remodelled few ago... and then a presence behind her shocks her...

Kobayashi enters the music room where the culprit proceeds to attack her. However, Kobayashi manages to incapacitate the culprit with a suplex and she is revealed to be Sato in disguise. The Detective Boys and Shiratori appears, revealing Sato replaced Kobayashi in the hallway and naming the culprit to be Ryusuke Kodama.

The Detective Boys reveal that Kobayashi's testimony was correct, and that she mistook Kodama to be a woman in the alley due to his long hair (which he has cut short) and the position of his arm making him seem as if he had breasts. Conan explains the woman's voice that was heard belonged to the victim, and that 09 was actually OS and stood for the first two letters of Osaka Nico Nico transportation. Shiratori reveals that they questioned the truck driver, who saw the victim and Kodama entering the alley. Kodama confesses and explains that Sumida once was his sponsor in his promising career as a baseball player, but when he hurt his shoulder Sumida started to get more demanding in regards to the money she loaned him; she apparently planned to kill Kodama to receive money from his life insurance to settle his debt.

Kodama claims that the murder of Sumida was in self-defense, but Shiratori refuses this explanation because according to the law, self-defense relies in lack of actual killing plans like Kodama's, and he's used a baseball bat to kill people instead of fulfilling his dream. Shiratori does this in a manner than triggers Kobayashi's memories (young Shiratori told similar things to the shoplifter he and Kobayashi stopped), and she finally remembers their chance encounter. When she says so, Shiratori says that he's loved Kobayashi even from before the children before them were born, and she accepts his feelings. The next day Shiratori refuses to go have lunch with Chiba, Sato and Takagi since Kobayashi has made him a bento lunch.
