Conan's discovery Vermouth disguised as Dr. Araide

Conan first suspects there is another Black Organization member who was present at the mourning party after considering how Pisco obtained another handkerchief which enabled him to leave the investigation. Conan didn't realize that this Black Organization member might be after him until after the bus jack case when Haibara tells Conan there was definitely someone from the Organization on the bus. Conan's first suspect is Akai Shuuichi whose behavior seemed suspicious.[1] After recognizes Akai in the P & A case[2], Conan shows sensitivity to the prospect of someone investigating them.[3] Conan doesn't seem to suspect Dr. Araide yet because he was willing to use his voice changer in front of him. [4]

Conan gets his first tangible proof someone is investigating around him them when Takagi informs Conan all the records of Mouri's cases were stolen from the police station on the day of the bus hijack incident and later returned.[5] He begins to wonder who the target is and suspects Akai may be behind the incident because of the timing. Conan also begins to suspect Jodie and Araide as well because they were also on the bus.[6] He isn't sure of the motive for taking the records although Conan wonders if someone is trying to lure him out or if the person returned the files because they already knew what Conan would do.[5] Conan's idea that Pisco had an accomplice among the other suspects has fully solidified. He has noticed Chris Vineyard hasn't appeared in public since that case, thus Conan believes Chris is the Black Organization accomplice. He asks Agasa to go onto Chris's fansite and gather information on her past, interests, and habits.[5] Conan is already aware that Chris Vineyard has disguise abilities and may be in disguise as someone around him.[6]


Conan tells Agasa and Hattori about the case files being stolen and returned. He looks into Chris Vineyard because she hadn't surfaced since the case at the Haido City Hotel case. Figuring that Chris Vineyard is the other Black Org agent he realizes that she may be able to disguise herself and may be pretending to be someone close to him. (Who are you.) He becomes suspicious of Jodie and Araide. Mouri’s case records were stolen from the police department and then mysteriously returned. This winds up eventually being the clue that causes Conan to realize Araide is Vermouth: Jodie isn't in Mouri's case files at this point, Araide is. Vermouth needed the files to give proper testimony at the trial and to act correctly as Araide.

(32-9) 326: Conan recognizes Akai from the Bus Jack 38 chapters ago making him wonder if it wasn't a coincidence Akai appeared again. Conan shielded Haibara from Akai's gaze as he passed a second time.
(33-4) 332: Conan worries the man with the beanie Ran saw was Akai (it was Makoto), demonstrating that Conan has begun show sensitivity

34-2 Hattori asks Conan if there are any strange foreign women around him. Conan denies it, but Hattori figures it out anyway and they visit Jodie.

34-4 He is also suspicious of two other people, Akai Shuuichi and Dr. Aradie.
