As Gonbei returns to the shack | As Gonbei returns to the shack, he explains to the two that he was just worried when they decided to go out alone like that. He apologizes for his not-so-friendly appearance, and the two apologize to him because of mistaking him as Hannya. Situation
During a sleepover at a mountain cabin, Sonoko has been telling Ran a story of Hannya, whom a woman was killed by when she got lost in the woods. The story easily scared the poor girl as she seeks safety from Conan. Conan and Sonoko decide to let Ran cook the dinner while they pick wild vegetables as a way for her to investigate the rumor.
During their vegetable searching, Sonoko experiences something that Ran had just gone through, so she suggests they should go back to the cabin instead. On their way home, Sonoko sees someone burying something, so Conan decides to dig up the land after the man leaves. The content that was buried earlier is a corpse of an unknown woman, terrifying Sonoko as she screams loudly, alerting the man to come back. The man, wearing a mask like Hannya, decides to silence them both. Fortunately, the duo are able to cut them off and take cover in tall grasses.
Suddenly, Ema Tono appears out of nowhere when the duo are still hiding, scaring both girls in the process. Conan finds Ema’s ring does not fit her at all, and he also finds a cabin on top of a mountain, so he suggests the three heading there for refugees. Gonbei is the master of that mountain shack, and upon hearing pleas from the three, he reluctantly agrees to let them in. Minutes later, Masashi Inukai returns to the shack, and confirms to Sonoko and Conan that he was called by the police to find their whereabouts. Just as Sonoko is celebrating that Ran has called the police and they will be saved soon, Inukai reveals he dropped the communication radio by accident, meaning they should be residing at the shack until either it is morning or the police arrive.
A moment later, Conan drags Sonoko outside as he reveals to her that the murderer they encountered earlier could be any of the three people they just met. Conan explains why he perceives it that way: The colour of Inukai’s vest is too dark for others to find him if he gets lost in the wood, whereas Ema’s current outfits are just too bright to keep her from nature predators or human predators. Meanwhile, Gonbei's appearance when they met him for the first time does not resemble that of a man who stayed at home all day, while Conan also smelled blood from him.
Meanwhile, Ran and the policeman she called to find Sonoko and Conan haven’t found them yet, prompting her to depart with the policemen she is going with to speed up the progress. At the same time, in the room Conan and Sonoko are having rest, Conan wakes her up and the two begin to run. Outside the cabin, the two find a bloody axe on a chopping stump, making them believe Hannya is the murderer. Just then, Gonbei approaches them with a fierce expression and carries a shotgun. The two are scared as they run for their lives and ignore his plea to wait. Shortly after, they slip off the slope down to a cliff, as they scream in fear, which Ran is able to hear.
After Conan gives Sonoko first-aid as she got injured while saving him from the fall impact, he begins trying to throw his elasticity suspender to a tree branch, intending to use it as a pulley shaft. The efforts succeed thanks to Sonoko’s help, and as the two finally climb up the mountain, they are welcomed by Ema. She is also shocked upon learning that Gonbei is a murderer, and suggests that the three should escape together. Suddenly, Conan questions the girl about the ring, then he rummages through her handbag and finds a knife with ropes inside. Sonoko grabs Conan and runs back to the shack, wondering who is the murderer they encountered.
