The man with an odd expression is Ren Tsubota, the one falling to his death is Takeshi Koiwai, and the victim Tsubota was trying to help is Rokuro Oshiba. Oshiba was hit on both sides of his head, leading to inevitable death if his head wasn’t as tough as someone’s. By questioning Asao Sendagi, one of Koiwai’s friends, everyone learns that Koiwai hated Oshiba because the latter plagiarized one of his works and earned an award from that plagiarized work. However, Sendagi notes to everyone that Koiwai is not crazy enough to kill anyone. Koiwai’s motive is clear, but the way he executed the murder does not feel natural, so Megure orders his subordinates to find everything they can that is related to the crime.
Kogoro and Conan also decide to investigate Koiwai themselves to help the police end the case. Conan finds a restaurant employee that is acquainted with Koiwai and contacts Kogoro as the Great Detective just finishes asking probably one of Koiwai’s neighbours. The employee recalls that she heard Koiwai discussing that he and someone else could make it work together, which could imply the existence of accomplice(s) responsible for Oshiba’s death.

Case

Situation

At the bench near the stairs that lead to an abandoned temple, an old couple, named Hirunosuke Yanaka and Sayo Nezu, are talking about how each of them had a dream about the other one, when they see Kogoro and Conan looking for a notebook. The notebook has been kept by Nezu ever since she found it earlier this morning, and is then given back to Kogoro.

Accident?
Location: Somewhere near the stairs at the abandoned temple
Victim: Takeshi Koiwai
Age: 29 years old
Cause of death: Falling down the stairs
Suspects: Ren Tsubota
Tsubota's words: Stop! Wait! catch the attention of Kogoro, Conan, and an old couple. Then a man is seen falling down the stairs near the bench the old couple are sitting at.

Suddenly, the four hear the voice of a man telling someone else: “Stop! Wait!” before seeing a man falling down from the stairs and going straight to the afterlife. Before Kogoro could assess anything further, the man that has said the words expresses his disbelief: “No way!” along with his odd facial expression. Still, the man asks if Kogoro can call another ambulance for another victim.

Murder
Location: At the same location, but upstair
Victim: Rokuro Oshiba
Age: 41 years old
Cause of death: Blunt force trauma on both sides of his head
Suspects: Ren Tsubota, and Takeshi Koiwai
Ren Tsubota mentions he saw Koiwai hitting Oshiba, but Conan is not convinced because the only things that he and the others near the bench knew were Tsubota's words.

The man with an odd expression is Ren Tsubota, the one falling to his death is Takeshi Koiwai, and the victim Tsubota was trying to help is Rokuro Oshiba.
