The two are hiding in the woods, blending in the high grasses, wondering why they get stuck in this situation when Ema Tono appears out of nowhere. Both girls are scared when they see each other. Cọnan notices that Ema’s ring does not fit her at all, just then, he also sees another cabin near the top of the mountains, so the three decide to go there for help. Another jumpscare happens when Gonbei, the owner of the mountain shack, looks outside to see who is knocking the door with a fierce glare. Still, he allows them to stay until morning so they can go back safe and sound. Another person comes to the shack, his name is Masashi Inukai. He is a hunter that was called by the police to find Conan and Sonoko, much to her astonishment as they will be safe as soon as she makes the call to the police. However, Inukai drops his communication radio like his habits again, upsetting the girl.
Suddenly, Ema Tono appears out of nowhere when the duo are still hiding, scaring both girls in the process. Conan finds Ema’s ring does not fit her at all, and he also finds a cabin on top of a mountain, so he suggests the three heading there for refugees. Gonbei is the master of that mountain shack, and upon hearing pleas from the three, he reluctantly agrees to let them in. Minutes later, Masashi Inukai returns to the shack, and confirms to Sonoko and Conan that he was called by the police to find their whereabouts. Just as Sonoko is celebrating that Ran has called the police and they will be saved soon, Inukai reveals he dropped the communication radio by accident, meaning they should be residing at the shack until either it is morning or the police arrive.

As soon as Conan and Sonoko get themselves a private space, he tells her that any of the three can be the murderer they encountered earlier, as:
* The color of Inukai’s vest is black instead of a bright color like his hat so he can be easily found in the dark woods, suggesting that he could have changed the outfit to cover the blood.
* Tono could’ve done the same since her current outfit is too bright. Conan does not know what she hid inside her purse. And she is also the only out of three to be left-handed like Hannya.
* Gonbei looked dirty when he said that he was at home all day, and Conan smelled blood from him.
Then, Conan sees a basket that might have contained belongings of Gonbei’s victim, but Gonbei steps in and clarifies that he found it in the woods, relieving both of them.

Meanwhile, the police Ran called haven’t found the whereabouts of Sonoko and Conan, so Ran decides to search for them on her own with the flash light. At midnight, Conan wakes Sonoko up as soon as everyone else has gone resting somewhere else in the shack, signifying that they should go out of the shack. Outside, they see Hannya’s mask and a bloody axe, convincing them that Gonbei is truly Hannya. Then, Gonbei appears with a shotgun, looking at the kids with his scary expression, making the two scared as they run away for their lives.
A moment later, Conan drags Sonoko outside as he reveals to her that the murderer they encountered earlier could be any of the three people they just met. Conan explains why he perceives it that way: The colour of Inukai’s vest is too dark for others to find him if he gets lost in the wood, whereas Ema’s current outfits are just too bright to keep her from nature predators or human predators. Meanwhile, Gonbei's appearance when they met him for the first time does not resemble that of a man who stayed at home all day, while Conan also smelled blood from him.

Little did they know that in front of their route is a slope, and Gonbei was simply trying to stop them from falling, but it is too late as both of them slip off the slope down to a cliff, resulting in one of Sonoko’s legs being injured. After Conan first-aids for her injured leg, he tries to lift the two up using the Elasticity Suspender as a pulley, but it is unsuccessful because he couldn’t throw it high enough to reach the tree branch that he intends to be the shaft. Sonoko is impressed with his efforts, so she lifts him up to help him reach the tree branch, and as the two climb up the mountains, they are found by Tono.
Meanwhile, Ran and the policeman she called to find Sonoko and Conan haven’t found them yet, prompting her to depart with the policemen she is going with to speed up the progress. At the same time, in the room Conan and Sonoko are having rest, Conan wakes her up and the two begin to run. Outside the cabin, the two find a bloody axe on a [[wikipedia:Tree stump|chopping stump]], making them believe Hannya is the murderer. Just then, Gonbei approaches them with a fierce expression and carries a shotgun. The two are scared as they run for their lives and ignore his plea to wait. Shortly after, they slip off the slope down to a cliff, as they scream in fear, which Ran is able to hear.

Tono, upon hearing Sonoko’s conclusion about the identity of Hannya, suggests she and the two escape together. However, Conan asks if the ring was her or not owing to the fact that she constantly struggles to wear it, and tries to rummage her purse. Inside the purse is a knife that has ropes. Sonoko grabs Conan as the two get away from Tono, they run back to the shack again and wonder who is the true Hannya.
After Conan gives Sonoko first-aid as she got injured while saving him from the fall impact, he begins trying to throw his elasticity suspender to a tree branch, intending to use it as a [[wikipedia:Pulley|pulley shaft]]. The efforts succeed thanks to Sonoko’s help, and as the two finally climb up the mountain, they are welcomed by Ema. She is also shocked upon learning that Gonbei is a murderer, and suggests that the three should escape together. Suddenly, Conan questions the girl about the ring, then he rummages through her handbag and finds a knife with ropes inside. Sonoko grabs Conan and runs back to the shack, wondering who is the murderer they encountered.

As Gonbei returns to the shack again and sees Sonoko, he explains that he was just worried about the two, and both sides apologize for the misunderstanding. He confesses that he was the one behind Hannya, which may explain why he looked dirty earlier, but he did it only to scare off people who leave litter in the woods. At the same time Tono returns to the shack, Sonoko believes her to be the one behind Hannya, but Conan is able to suggest the opposite once he notices the handkerchief wrapping around her. The reason is because the knife that Tono brought is one that people usually bring when hiking; the rope inside the purse was cut in half, while the handkerchief is meant to hide her neck wound; suggesting that she was trying to commit suicide. Tono confesses that it is true, because she suffered a lot from stress, resulting in her weight loss and her being unable to fit her ring.
As Gonbei returns to the shack, he explains to the two that he was just worried when they decided to go out alone like that. He apologizes for his not-so-friendly appearance, and the two apologize to him because of mistaking him as Hannya. Gonbei also confesses being ''the one behind Hannya'' to only scare off people who litter in the woods. At the same time, Ema catches up with the two, which sparks Sonoko into believing her to be the murderer they encountered. Conan suddenly has a look on the handkerchief Ema has been wearing throughout the time and realizes she isn’t the murderer either. Conan explains that the knife he pulled out from her purse is the one hikers usually brought along, the ropes seen along with the knife were actually from a rope that was cut, combining that she has been wearing a handkerchief on her neck, Conan concludes she has been hiding her rope wound there, suggesting that she ''did attempt suicide'' earlier in the day. Ema confesses that the kid is saying the truth, and reveals her current statement that almost led her to end her life. Conan points out that she has been helping him and Sonoko from time to time, suggesting that she hasn’t been consumed completely from the intent to end her life.

This means that the murderer Conan and Sonoko met at dusk is '''Masashi Inukai'''. He killed the victim due to the fact he is her affair partner and he got rid of her when she became inconvenience. Inukai pretends to plead for his crime once Conan has enough proof to conclude he is the murderer, just as when Gonbei thinks the case is over and stops pointing his shotgun at him, Inukai takes the chance to shoot at him, but Tono pushes Gonbei out, injuring herself in the process. The gunshot catches the attention of Ran, who has been looking for Conan and Sonoko, just before the murderer can fire another shot, Ran shows up. The culprit changes the direction toward her instead of the four, Conan and Sonoko take the chance to block his view, not letting their friend get hurt. Ran takes the chance, and tells the two to move away so she can knock him out.
