Situation

Kogoro received a request from a Ginza barmaid working in Beika to find her missing armadillo. The woman recalled that her pet went missing on their way home around the Birinmon Bridge. She suspected that the armadillo must be in the fish market near the bridge, and worried that he (the armadillo is a male) could have been slaughtered by the fish wholesalers for meat.

A barmaid in Ginza asked Kogoro to investigate a missing armadillo belonging to a her. He went to Birinmon fish market to ask the wholesalers working in Birinmon Fish Market if they saw Armadillo because she was certain that the armadillo went to that market.

At the Birinmon Fish Market, Kogoro recalls his conversation with the barmaid to the tuna wholesaler to explain why he was looking for an armadillo in a fish market. The wholesaler holds his big knife and says: So you mean Birinmon Fish Market slaughtered the animal for meat? He warns the detective that they are all honest fish wholesalers before spraying water on Kogoro’s face to chase him off. Kogoro receives the same treatment for three more times with three different tuna wholesalers, for some reason.

Kogoro is frustrated with the fact that he gets sprayed with water every time he asks for the armadillo’s whereabouts, so Conan suggests they both go home instead. A taxi also arrives at the location the two are standing, so they decide to have this one take them home. Inside, the driver of the taxi reveals himself to be one of Kogoro’s biggest fans, even going as far as blurting out that he wants to be married to Kogoro Mouri. The detective has no problem with this, and tells the driver to go any route he wants, as long as he drives them home. This reminds the driver about a pair of brothers he picked up yesterday because they did not use the shortest way to travel to their destination, and to thank Kogoro for using his service, he decides to do the same to Kogoro and Conan.

Mysterious People?

While talking to the extremely talkative taxi driver that is bringing Conan and Kogoro home, he told them about two mysterious brothers not using the fastest route to go somewhere near a park in Birinmon city.

The three arrive at a parking lot that is both near a river and a park in Birinmon city. The driver asks Kogoro about the true purpose of the brothers while Kogoro, but he had been sleeping for a while, and he rushes for a toilet instead of answering the question as soon as he wakes up, leaving Conan with the driver. Meanwhile, everyone inside the park in Birinmon City is practicing for the upcoming Ghost Chimney Festival, and the noises of it catch the attention of Conan and the driver, so the two decide to go there. This festival attracts so much public attention that the organizing committee has to use a safe to keep the money made from the festival. During the event, some roads will be restricted to make it easier for that money to be transferred to the bank via their vehicle. Conan, after hearing the details of the festival, understands why the brothers chose to go the long way. He explains it to the driver and Kogoro, who has just returned from the toilet.

Conan goes for the parking lot that the armored vehicle usually parks in while Kogoro still finds Armadillo’s whereabouts. Conan deduces that the brothers used the taxi to park along with the vehicle so that as soon as the staff of the armored vehicle return with the money collected from the park, the brothers will neutralize the staff and take the money along. However, his deduction has obvious flaws:

• Any taxi driver will just report the police and run away from the brothers as soon as he knows about the crime. Moreover, the young driver told Conan that the brothers went somewhere else instead of doing something near the car.
• What if someone else is using the parking lot along with the armored vehicle? Since the parking lot has a limited amount of slots, the brothers need to have their driver park at an unorthodox position, which will catch someone’s attention, eventually.

Conan sees a black car and assumes it was the two brothers. However, inside the car is just a normal family, and so he’ll have to wait for the two brothers to appear somewhere other than the parking lot. Then, Conan happens to see the two security guards holding a suitcase full of money each. He follows the two guards and hides behind the black car of the family he saw previously. Suddenly, Kogoro appears out of nowhere, still looking for the pet’s whereabouts by saying its name, making the two guards do the same in unison. Conan recalls the driver’s impression about the brothers and yells out loud: The two security guards are the robbers! As Conan is chasing the brothers, he figures out their true plan: They disguised themselves as the security guards in the armored vehicle so as to take the money.

Kogoro's action of calling the armadillo's name causes the two security guards to do the same, which exposes themselves as the thieves.

They were also the ones who stole the armadillo and used it to bait the real armored vehicle drivers. Their plan was foiled when they went inside Birinmon fish market and had water thrown on them from the wholesalers, which caused them to lose control of the vehicle and dive head first in the river. The armadillo was retrieved and it was revealed that the barmaid wanted to use it as a sideshow animal, causing Kogoro, Conan and the armadillo to freak out and escape her.
