Haibara, Ayumi, Ran, Sonoko, and Sato go to an all-you-can-eat sweet shop in Haido Town Royal Hotel, celebrating the good health and future achievements of the girls. However...

Murder/Attempted murder

The two ladies began to writhe in pain and suddenly collapsed after consuming the drink, with one having passed away.

Ran tries to contact Shinichi Kudo for help solving the case, while Ayumi calls Conan. However, Conan (as well as Shinichi) couldn't hear the calls because he had left both of his phones elsewhere so that he can focus on fishing with Professor Agasa. With no help from either Conan or Shinichi, the girls will have to solve the case on their own.

The girls decide to ask the people nearby, along with local police. Kyoka Kasai is the first to be asked; she is a sociology student at Haido Women's College who works here as her part-time job. In fact, Naoko Shimamura and Satomi Amari are both at Haido Town Royal Hotel to visit Kasai upon knowing she works there, which explains why she is crying over Amari's death. Moreover, Kasai states that both were such good and earnest individuals that no one hates them at all. Ryuichiro Mita is the second to be on-screen; he is an office worker at Haido Brotherhood Company. He knows Shimamura because he once saw her in his company, but was not sure if she was applying or not.

Shunsuke Yoshimura is the third one on-screen; he is a municipal worker. It is worth noting that Ayumi has asked both Mita and Kasai what sweet they like before their respective interrogation ends, and she does the same with Yoshimura. This time, his answer is not delivered as smoothly as the two previous, and he also shows strange expressions upon seeing a piece of skin found at the scene. Both things prompt the girls to ask Yoshimura again. From there, we learn that he works as a snake hunter, and was afraid of being convicted for murder if he revealed to them about the skin. On a side note, the cause of poisoning is revealed to be snake venom. What a coincidence!

Moments later, Kasai reaches out to the girls to confess that she herself is knowledgeable about snakes, as she is working very hard to become an underground snake charming idol. Kasai also notes that the snake she has for training, Kobu, has had its fangs removed so that Kobu can bite her all day and she’ll be just fine!

After reviewing the information they’ve just gathered, Ayumi proposes using their imagination to figure out who poured the poison, which further confirms that anyone could be the culprit. Just then, Ran’s statement helps Haibara realize something, as she then asks the two police officers to confirm a few things.

Haibara’s theory: Since the statement of medicines being less effective the more you use them also applies to poison, Haibara suggests that Naoko Shimamura repeatedly ingests snake venom. Hence, she has enough tolerance to survive doses that usually kill a human.

It is also revealed that Satomi Amari once insulted the snake Naoko Shimamura bred half a year ago during an argument. The police also received information that Shimamura had gotten away from the hospital. This further supports the suspicion that Shimamura became upset and waited for an opportunity to seek revenge.

However, it is unclear why the girls and the two officers end up surrounded by snakes. Suddenly, Kyoka Kasai, Ryuichiro Mita, and Shunsuke Yoshimura come to the rescue. Kasai had overheard that Shimamura had disappeared from the hospital and thought she must have come to the current location, so she called the other two for assistance. Just as the case seems to be over, a black, seemingly venomous snake bites Sonoko. But it turns out that the snake is not even venomous, and Sonoko faints, thinking that a venomous one bit her.

Trivia

• The "challenge" to poison the holy grail is a reference to Indiana Jones.
• This is the last episode that the third door eyecatch is used.
• The fish Conan caught in the episode were the following: An immaculate boxfish, a scrawled filefish (which Conan thought was a thread-sail filefish), a brown-lined puffer (which Agasa thought was blacktail tripodfish), and a marbled flounder. All of which, except the last one, are venomous.
• The sweets mentioned are Mont Blanc with Tamba chestnuts, tarte Tatin with Shine Muscat and Kyoho grapes and Griotte-Pistache tart (made with tart cherries and pistachios).
• Haido University is modeled after Rikkyo University, which was featured in The Ranpo Mansion Murder Case.
