Situation

Takahiko Kamiyu, a literary critic, entrusted Kogoro with the responsibility of looking after the house and taking care of his anxious cat for three days while he visited the countryside. Even though he previously thought the request did not benefit formal detective work, Kogoro still accepted it due to the high payment. On the first day of the sitting:

• Genseki Ishiba comes to the residence to find Kamiyu. He wants to settle the critics' fight that was interrupted a few days ago.
• One hour later, a magazine editor Sachiyo Kafuka comes to apologize to Kamiyu for complaining about the literary review he gave yesterday. Kamiyu praised So Fujieda’s work in yesterday's review, which is the opposite of what he usually does and what the readers expect.

At the end of the day, Conan is certain that the cat, named Tama, is not an anxious one.

On the second day of the house-sitting, a Haido police officer comes to the house, as he had received an anonymous tip that states: “Kamiya buried something in the yard of his Haido home two days ago”. The four people go to the yard and see traces of digging, so they ask the worker hired by Kamiya to build the library, who just happens to arrive, to dig the suspected area. The five discover a body with a knife stuck on the left chest. The police arrive at the residence, and Kogoro calls Kamiya to return from his visit.

Based on some events that the Mouri family encountered the day before, they consider the possibility that Kamiya was being accused by Ishiba, who used the excuse of resolving a dispute among critics as an excuse to check if his plot was discovered or not. Meanwhile, after taking Kamiya's statement, the police questioned whether he had been falsely accused. At that moment, he thought of Ishiba as the person who could have done it.

With the investigation focused on hatred toward Kamiya, the Mouri family arrive at Ishiba's apartment to ask a few questions, but it seems he is hiding something, so Takagi and Chiba decide to take him to the station for questioning when the duo just arrive and hear the conversation. The Mouri family then decides to ask Kafuka about her intention to apologize the day before, and just as they are about to hear the relationship between the victim and the literary critic, the police also arrive to listen after verifying Ishiba's alibi evidence.

With the investigation of the two suspects yielding no results, both the police and the Mouri family consider another line of inquiry: who benefited from the novelist's death? Based on independent investigations by both sides, they all believed that Kumi had killed her husband and fabricated evidence to frame Kamiya. But is that hypothesis really correct?

The culprit is Takahiko Kamiyu. Two days ago, while Kamiya is hiring Kogoro, he acquired the prop needed to use as evidence to frame Kumi Fujieda for murdering her husband. Then he invited Genseki Ishiba and Sachiko Kafuka to arrive on the following day, which led the two to meet Kogoro, the house sitter Kamiya hired. After inviting the two, he murdered the novelist, hid the body, and cast suspicion on himself with a fake anonymous tip. Kamiya did those to manipulate Kogoro into believing that he is innocent.

The motive was that he believed the unfortunate novelist had sent a threatening letter to reveal the forgettable work that Kamiya wrote 20 years ago, when in fact, the person who sent the threatening letter was his wife, Kumi Fujieda. Once the truth came out, both of them cried over their own mistakes—one had lost the person they loved forever, and the other regretted their own wrongdoing.
