Plot

The chapter opens on the screams of Ran and Kazuha echoing from the temple, which alert Tesshin who climbs the staircase towards the chastisement room, where Conan and Heiji are checking the state of Kantetsu's body. Tesshin exclaims himself that this must be Kantetsu, the missing monk for five days, which is corroborated by Tontetsu and Kentetsu, who just arrived at the scene. The two monks say that he seems slimmer than before but it is definitely him, but they also add that they went in the room before and did not see him then. Conan and Heiji deduce that he was "sucked dry", and Ran and Kazuha think that he was absorbed by the flaming skulls, but Conan and Heiji correct them, saying that with the duct tape marks on his mouth and the dried skin, he was probably left to starve, but no flaming skulls would put duct tape on someone. This brings the girls back to reality. By looking at the completely dry body and the walls which have no openings, Conan and Heiji deduce that one of three kidnapped him, starved him, and brought him in the room very recently. While feeling his hands on the walls, Heiji steps on something which is revealed to be his lost charm. Meanwhile, Conan urges someone to call the police, and Kentetsu decides to go, but trips on a bucket of water that was at the top of the staircase. Tontetsu walks towards the spilled water and assures the group that he had put it away. Tesshin interrupts them and asks them to go call the police first. Before leaving, Heiji remembers that Kogoro is still missing, which makes Ran worry more. Before leaving the crime scene, Conan takes another glance at the body and notices wood chippings.

At the same time, in a very dark room, Kogoro wakes up. He remembers what he saw in the chastisement room and looks around him, only to find rows of standing Kan'on statues, which scares him. Kentetsu comes back to the group and says that due to the heavy rain and the mud, the police can only reach them in about an hour. Heiji asks them to tell him more about the burnt body they were talking before, since the police is still not there yet. Tesshin reveals that on an early evening a month ago, a hiker found will-o'-the-wisps on the stairs leading to the temple and found a body at the top of the stairs. The body was identified as that of Jun Murata, a religious art expert who visited the temple. Tontetsu said that when he visited, Murata said that their Kan'on statues were "not worth worshipping", which prompts Conan to ask them if the statues were that badly sculpted. Tesshin replies by the negative, saying that on the contrary, their statues were deemed a national treasure and said that since he said that, Murata deserved to die from "divine punishment". Kentetsu then remembers that Murata wanted to see him, but Tesshin says that Murata never came to meet him.

As the rain is still pouring, Ran and Kazuha are looking for her father, while Kogoro is still tied up in the dark room. He hears his phone ringing, but is not able to answer it, but manages to pull it out of his back pocket. He then removes his socks and takes a picture of the Buddha statues with his feet and manages to send it to rain, although painstakingly. Along with the monks, Conan and Heiji take a look at the aforementioned national treasure statue and indeed recognize the fine artistry behind it. He asks them how they protect it, since it is very valuable. The monks state that the four of them took turns locking it in a safe at night, but as Kentetsu says that they will be down one member after Kantetsu died, Tesshin asks him not to worry, as "that will change the next week". Conan and Heiji are alone on the porch of the temple, and Heiji thinks at himself that fate got in his way again when he tried to confess. Guessing what Heiji was thinking, Conan says that the sunset from Mount Washio was very beautiful, prompting Heiji to want to solve the case faster so they can make it in time. Conan asks Heiji if he found his charm, and Heiji says that he did, in the chastisement room, and said that when he found it, the straps were streched. Both notice a black stain on the side of the charm. Both also notice that same black smudges are on their socks and realize this must have been from when the will-o'-the-wisps happened and they stepped over something. Conan then receives a message, which is the picture Kogoro tried to send earlier. On the other side of the temple porch, Ran is crying that she cannot find her father, and Kazuha comforts her, when a determined-looking Heiji arrives and asks Kazuha for her tablet. Kazuha then realizes that Heiji is about to solve the case and assures Ran that the case is about to come to a close.
