The Hotel Serial Bombing Case (ホテル連続爆破事件 ,Hoteru Renzoku Bakuha Jiken^?) is the 1144th and 1145th episode of the Detective Conan anime.

Part 1

Conan is delighted with his newly bought three detective novels from Haido bookstore, where Masumi recommended him to go for a good price, when he meets Masumi again. As she just finished repairing her motorbike and couldn’t open the bottle without filthying it, Conan has to do it for her. However, he does not know that the bottle was carbonated, and he ends up getting splashed over by the liquid inside. Luckily, since Masumi is currently living near the area, she can offer him a place to change his clothes, but he refuses as there have been two hotel bombing cases reported. Masumi then offers him to see the bombing code left at the bombing scene, sparking his interest.

Serial Bombings (Past)

Fortunately, no death is reported. There were strange codes sent to the scene of the bombings.

It turns out that the bottle Masumi asked him to open was an arrangement between her and her mother so that they can try to steal the antidote when he is taking a bath. However, he brought no antidotes today, so better luck next time!

After Conan finishes his bath, he asks Masumi how she could get access to the code of the first bombing. She recalls that before the first bombing happened, an employee of that hotel thought the code sent to the hotel was just a prank and uploaded it online. Masumi hacked their phone and found the code. Masumi recalls the threatening tone of the bomber: “I will detonate the room mentioned in the code. Any attempt to evacuate or call the police and I will detonate instantly. And you only get one guess, do it wrong and Kaboom!”

Conan then changes the topic into the identity of the mysterious girl living with Masumi, as he notices that there are some tea bags being used in British style. But before the topic can continue, the scream outside alerts the two, so the two go outside to see what is going on. Then, they realize that the hotel they are staying at has become the target of the bomber as Danji Rinzaki is complaining about a weird letter sent to his room to Seiko Ronda, a Haido Hotel cleaner.

Considering the circumstances, the bomber must be one of the three person appeared when the voices about the code is heard by Conan and Sera.

Suddenly, a bellhop Aruto Kureishi arrives and asks what they have found?! As the bellhop is going down to the reception with Conan and Masumi, he explains that the receptionists of the hotel received the threatening call of the bomber, and Kureishi happened to be near the targeted room, so he decided to check it out. After the three arrive at the reception, the receptionists receive another call from the bomber, informing everyone who hears the call that there is only an hour left before the bomb explodes. Just as Conan is confused whether he should call detective Takagi or Kogoro right now or not to have the second bombing code when he couldn’t have from the receptionists of this hotel, Kisaki’s voice disrupts his thoughts as she asks him what is going on.

However, Kisaki does not recognize Masumi despite having seen her calling with her brother in a case?! Conan then asks Kisaki to help him get the code from the second bombing after Masumi shows Kisaki about the code of the first bombing. At first, Kisaki refuses and suggests calling the police, but Masumi reminds her that the second bombing occurred sooner when the hotel decided to call the police. Just then, Conan wonders why Kisaki is hers, she then reveals that she is the representative lawyer of this hotel, much to the two detectives’ joy as they insist on having the lawyer’s influence to help them.

After receiving the code from Kisaki, Conan quickly reveals how the bomber had set the code, thereby quickly reducing the number of suspected rooms to 6. From there, Kisaki plans to help send the bellboy and cleaner to start questioning in Masumi's room since they are most likely the bomber, with Mary also secretly helping so that she could preserve her identity.

Part 2

So the investigation to find the bomber begin:

The first person to be questioned is the cleaner, she confirms that she had cleaned Danji Rinzaki's room but did not find any code at that time, not to mention she also expresses her discomfort at having to clean the room because he always violated the smoking policy and was kicked out of several hotels that coincidentally had bombings, luckily this hotel owner is a fan of his so he is allowed to stay. In addition, she was also asked to bring humidifiers to both rooms because she heard that someone was coughing, this accidentally alerted Sera because Mary often coughed for some reason.
The second person to be questioned is Kureishi, who says that he had left immediately after delivering Rinzaki's luggage and had not entered his room.
Finally, Rinzaki, although somewhat uncomfortable, accepts the questioning. He says that he had seen the code on the table near the humidifier after checking in and wondered if it belonged to the bomber. Kisaki lies that it was not and asks to search the room, he initially refuses but after hearing that he will be responsible if the bomb explodes, he complies.

However, Conan and Masumi (and others) are kicked out of the room soon after.

Despite being kicked out of the room, Kisaki, Conan, and Masumi show no signs of anxiety, and calmly tell the other two suspects that it will be fine to secretly evacuate those rooms, with Kureishi notifying room 2410; Kisaki and the cleaner will notify rooms 1412 and 1420; Masumi will evacuate rooms 1124 and 1214; and Conan will notify the receptionist. However, what we don't know is that Kisaki had secretly called the police before and now she is currently meeting with Megure and Takagi with the cleaner, implying that the truth of the matter has also been revealed.

Breaking the code

The three codes in the serial bombing were actually "the rail fence ciphers". The characters of the code are arranged in a zigzag pattern along rails and linked rail by rail to create the word. In addition, Kisaki and the detectives also realize that the character squared off in each code refers to a key in the keyboard, which could suggest the zigzag shape in which the other characters should be arranged:

The first character of the first code is "TE", referring to the letter "W", so arranging the code in W shape will give "room 3420".

The first character of the second code is "MO", referring to the letter "M", arranging the code in zigzag M shape will give room 2614.

She repeats the process for the second bombing.

She reveals the next target of the bomber.

The first character of the remaining code is "HI", referring to the letter "V", and the room that has the bomb is room 2114, which is Rinzaki's room.

The bomber, what has he done and the purpose

The real bomber is Aruto Kureishi.

He had made an extra key for room 2114 from the one he had picked up when Rinzaki accidentally dropped it earlier; he had also bombed hotels that had banned Rinzaki for smoking to create a motive for the bombings
Before the target arrived to check in, Kureishi had transported the luggage with the bombs and hidden it, a while later he used "a timed phone" to make the call, and "another timed phone" to play the bomber's recording, while he had "another phone" to disconnect the call remotely.
Finally, when the bomb is about to explode, Kisaki and the police assume that he will go to the rooftop to call the receptionist to inform them how to decrypt it and then throw the phone away while it is exploding to make it look like the bomber has committed suicide.

The reason Kureishi wanted to kill Rinzaki was because Rinzaki knew about his drug use and had blackmailed him.

However, Conan knew that he would not go to the rooftop to do that but would choose a room below or above the bombed room, and with the help of the receptionist, Conan found the current location of the bomber and ambushed him there. In the end, Kureishi is shot with a tranquilizer dart while waiting for Takagi to escort him according to the boy's message, ending the case.

However, things haven't ended there

The Mysterious man with sunglasses starts the fire hydrant to make Mary and Masumi run outside the hotel, thus allowing the Mysterious Old Man to look at Mary and stating that it is just as he dreamed of.

Manga to anime changes
