As a scientist, I'd like to believe that time travel is possible, but.... It really isn't. If you are moving faster than the speed of light, you aren't time traveling so much as seeing past light, your own time stream is still moving. There is a theory that says that moving that fast would cause time to move on earth and you'd come back from your journey in the future due to the theory of relativity. However considering that we cannot do such things we cannot test it. And I don't buy that as a viable result. And then you have the issue with backwards time travel. Which again, is not possible. Though I have to say it makes for great movies and TV shows (Bill and Ted, Back to the Future, Doctor Who). I have not been able to convince myself, objectively, that it is possible. We would have to break every law of physics, beyond simply breaking the speed of light barrier. That is unless we discover that String Theory is true, and those strings can link to other times and dimensions. However, that is unlikely to be the case. Other dimensions is possible, but to access and have those allow time travel is not (or at least highly unlikely).

Pretty horribly though. The DC psychology is laughable (though, its a means to an end), and its technically not one of the physical sciences. Biology is horrible, but I only say that because of the APTX thing. Chemistry is actually... one of the better ones. As is physics so long as it is GOSHO's story and not the anime team having fun (they take too many liberties in physics). Gosho does too but its usually only for the gadgets. Anatomy is pretty decent, but it sticks to the basics, but that is fine. I do not however remember astronomy.... Amazing things in science? Hell we might have found something that breaks physics! The neutrino subatomic particle has been found, tentatively at least, to be able to surpass the speed of light. There is also that arsenic based life form that NASA found in some arsenic laced pond. Evolution is not science....? WTF is wrong with you? It is most certainly science, and people are still studying it. And we are technically forcibly evolving certain organisms to meet certain ends through genetic recombination (biotech and molecular biology and geneticists focus on that among others). The most popular are bacterium (E.Coli is the usual), and plants. There is a hell fire of debate over GMOs though, which I don't understand... Those plants were bound to develop those resistances on their own, we just forced it along to help yield better crops.

Seen both. I have my reservations about Saving Private Ryan. It is certainly a good movie, but it isn't the best war movie. I understand the direction Spielberg wanted to take and respect that, but there were improvements to be made. Band of Brothers on the other hand is just FANTASTIC. Though... that isn't so much as a film as a mini-series. So I didn't put it up. Also I enjoyed Jarhead. Mainly because it shows what deployment is really like. People didn't like it because there wasn't any action, but that was based off of a true story, and that is what most wars are actually like. I have a friend who is a former Marine and he places Jarhead as one of the best Military movies ever, though he says the book is far superior (big surprise there). Though it isn't technically "action" it is certainly an interesting look at warzones and the soldiers who are there.

Not entirely true. It depends on a number of factors like openness of the atmosphere and what cross winds are around. LA is basically locked in by the mountains, and thus the pollution cannot escape easily making it much worse than elsewhere. And again, I only said the destructive way because I have seen a starlit sky from the ground and atop of buildings. And being that high up is nice because there is NO obstruction, and is gorgeous. Both are stunning but being able to see that much further is nice for those of us urbanites. And for a good portion of people a place with so few lights is hard to come by due to distance, as such is the case with me. Then again, the only time that view was rivaled was when I was on my family's farm in Europe... and that was stunning because all you needed to do was climb up the adjacent mountain and damn what an amazing view. I don't mention that because I only have vague memories of it because I was so young. I do remember my father briefly teaching me how to read the stars though (navigation wise).
-
So long as the pollutants don't get trapped (LA) a simple blackout and a park fits the bill nicely. However, nothing, and I mean nothing beats stargazing from the roof of a tall building with a nice telescope during a black out. I only had the chance to do that once though... However... to simulate that again, I suppose it would only take a few blocks of C4, some awesome stealthy moves to break into the local power grid, and a powerful enough remote so it can be detonated when you are on your rooftop... Of course people would be without power for a while, but I think the resulting view would be worth it.

I have but one question... How in blue blazes did you manage to see m16?! Did you break into the production studio to see the movie or what? It hasn't even gotten a proper trailer yet! I doubt that you got the numbers wrong, because clearly you have them straight... I just really want to know how you managed to get your hand on a preproduction copy of the movie. Normally you have to be working on the movie to do that (and usually only select members of the crew actually see the finished product this far in advance, because at this point it is usually still in editing and post-production) This far in advance I would even doubt it being ready for test audiences, unless it is a rough copy, which is likely to change before the final cut.

Who wants to bet that the girls on here have talked for at least 20 minutes with their friends on what their ideal guy is like and they are just holding out on us?

Let's be fair here... He is likely not the lamest... He is the most vulnerable member that we know about. We know he is proficient with guns, and that he is actually good at making deals. There are likely other members who are lamer than he is that we don't know about. I bet you could find at least 3 in the science division. We were lucky and got the awesome Shiho. But of those that we know about, and are confirmed... I'd agree that he is worse off. Though his abilities landed him a code name and rank, and it seems at least some freedom (though not much) Gin still seems to view him as a liability at times. However, Gin also trusts him to do reconnaissance on Vermouth on the Halloween boat thingy. I don't know... There has to be more to Vodka than what we have seen so far. Even past my suppositions. (at least I hope)

I was avoiding this... But hey... might as well... Like most guys I notice looks first... However... I am kinda different with what I prefer in looks. I think body type is what I consider more than anything for looks. Women that are too thin or too overweight I don't like (actually I think too thin is much worse than being a bit overweight). I don't know, call me crazy, but I think a healthy body weight is important. After that it is mostly intelligence. I value intelligence highly. My own personality is pretty twisted, so I'm pretty flexible with personality. So long as they are some what sane, and not too "bubbly" or (for lack of a better word) "bitchy" (aka, a nice balance between the two) I'm cool. Granted, if they are scientists or at least interested in science like what the ideal would be, they wouldn't have such extreme personalities in the first place (or so I have noticed from being in a science major, but I'm sure there are always exceptions). Then again... most scientists are insane from what I have seen... the education makes scientists that way... Unlike Moho, I have no preference towards wisdom. Quite frankly I believe wisdom is earned over the years. Everyone is wise to a degree (unless they are somewhat slow), so that is less important. I'd also ideally would look for a woman that is active. Last and most important is open mindedness and forward thinking (which again, previous requirements would ideally set these up).

Three things... 1) Tequila is no more. 2) The BO probably needs several of each profession. It is highly unlikely that they would have only one of any person... The only possibility for that is the detective person, which is Bourbon. Everyone else there seem to be two or more. 3) And that is exactly why I made a point to say it seems like he has an eidetic memory. Tequila was smart and could make deals, but that doesn't really hold up to one person being a compendium of useful information. So even if we assume that he is new and was placed with Gin to train, there must be a reason why he has been there for so long, and why it seems like he isn't going anywhere, but still has a code name and ability to make deals and meetings on his own. He has a certain degree of freedom, but is still with Gin a majority of the time. And having an eidetic memory is pretty irreplaceable. Most people don't have it, and they tend to be extremely smart with small details. If that is the reason why he was given a code name and trained in deal making to be placed as Gin's partner. I would totally understand.
-
My current theory is that Vodka has an eidetic memory. He isn't exactly a secretary or personal assistant, rather than a compendium of information that the BO can use and call upon. He was placed with the #1 assassin to keep tabs on all the people that Gin has killed in case a problem arises with killing said person and the BO needs to deal with it. If Gin cannot remember the conditions and the reasons and the circumstances of the person's death that could cause problems. He may not see a use for remembering but I'm sure Anokata does. Consider this... Gin has supposedly killed so many people, and likely Vodka was with him the entire time. We know that a decent amount of time has passed and Gin has killed several people since killing Kudo, and yet Vodka was able to remember the exact moment, what happened, what time of day, and the method of killing Kudo. Likely it extends past this. It is possible that he has other knowledge as well that would be needed by the BO. He was given a gun, training and placed with the #1 assassin. And the mere fact that we know that Vodka is not always with Gin means that Vodka is sometimes elsewhere on assignment, possibly by Gin's or Anokata's orders. He doesn't seem to have much common sense, but he appears to have an eidetic memory. I'm not sure what else he knows, but it can be assumed that it is more than the average person landing him in his current position. Further to support this is that Gin does the killing, Vodka does the deals. He did the exchange at the amusement park and he was the person talking with Itakura about the program. He doesn't keep a log of anything it seems and yet he remembers the details and the conditions of all the deals. In this instance, Gin is actually aiding Vodka who doesn't know how to watch his back (like at the amusement park and at the drop off location for the program). The only problem with Vodka is that he doesn't have as much common sense. But as Chek said, we know he has a good shot. I would say that he was the getaway diver, but that wouldn't make sense since he is always with Gin when Gin kills. In fact, if he was simply proficient at bartering and making deals that could very well be the reason he gained a code name and was placed with Gin. Gin gets assignments to kill, and Vodka gets assignments to make deals. If a deal fails, it is likely Gin's job to finish the person off (and to make sure that Vodka doesn't expose them). No one else seems to make extortion deals or contact people outside of the Org for things other than Vodka. Vermouth has only been shown killing and assuming the identity of people, Gin has only been shown killing, the scientists only do science, Anokata remains in the shadows and dictates orders, the snipers snipe, so who extorts and makes deals for the benefit of the BO? Vodka. Would make sense.

Looks to me like a new generation of Boy Band... I never did like those... Still don't, but somehow the years have not been kind to them... They have gotten worse... much worse...

I wonder... Where is Waldo? Is he with Carmen Sandiego somewhere? Why must we find Waldo? Is he like Carmen and actually an international thief?

^This I can't add anything, and he took what I was going to say. Though I wouldn't have said secretary. I would think he is closer to a personal assistant. I'd also like to note that there may be other things that may make him useful to the BO aside from being there to fill in the gaps for Gin. I'm pretty certain just being able to fill in the gaps for Gin is not enough to earn a code name. You seem to need to be completely proficient in something extremely useful. We know they give them to snipers, scientists, assassins, and disguise (granted she probably had a code name BEFORE that). While it is possible that they gave it to Vodka for being a top notch gun wielding secretary/personal assistant, I don't buy it.

Likely the roller coaster had the highest vantage point with the least obstruction, also, it wouldn't LOOK like they were scoping anything out.

Not only Haibara but I saw all of the DBoys...
-
That is if he goes to Teitan... I think Shinichi only went there for Ran, otherwise with his intelligence there would have been better HS in his district that he could have attended I'm sure. Mitsu might not do the same unless he feels obligated to remain with the DBoys, or Ayumi. I could see Ai (if she remains as Ai) going to a more prestigious HS, as she has no one that she cares about romantically and she is far more objective oriented than Shinichi.

So we all have music that we like, some of it is popular, and some of it you think people may have never heard of. Whether it be an old time classic that was lost to the sands of time, or an underground band that hasn't hit it big, we all have music that people simply don't seem to know about. The point of this thread is to link to videos, mp3 links or anything that you can find of music that you think is good or interesting and deserves more exposure. Now I'm not setting any ground rules except that it CANNOT be popular in AMERICA or JAPAN. I'm working under the assumption that most popular American music is pretty world renown, hitting charts if not topping charts globally, and most users here are already aware of a lot of the Japanese music that is popular through anime or other means (so yes, as much as it pains me, I won't be posting any B'z in here, we all know that they are the greatest* and most popular Japanese band of our time). SO! I shall start it off with a few songs that I don't think people here have heard or know about... Hiromi Uehara - The Tom & Jerry Show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRgByqWT3c0 Gogol Bordello - Through the Roof 'n' Underground Lets see some interesting/good music** DCW! Notes: *B'z awesomeness may be debated, but all debates will be ignored by the stating party **Not all music posted will be seen as interesting/good by all. But lets try anyway, yes?

Holy hell... If you are going to type like that, please be considerate enough to make it into a list like Kim-chan... I seriously had problems understanding what you wrote. Also it's kind of rude to ASK for "likes" or "+1" or a "vote up" or a "rep" (as it is known here). If a person feels that your post is worth liking they will, and at no other time. Sure there are sheep on the internet who will do so just because people asked, like on youtube. But I like to think that users on the forums I frequent aren't sheep and are generally more intelligent than the mass populous who will do something just because they are told to. Basically what it comes down to is internet and forum etiquette. Make your posts readable and understandable (It helps organizing it if it is an excited rant like yours) or doing what I do and use proper language, because it looks quite nice and is rarely misunderstood (though that doesn't prevent misinterpretation). And asking for certain things is rude and kind of pointless. Look around the forum and see how everyone else posts and follow that... This has been a public service announcement courtesy of Kyuu. Sorry for the OTness, but I had to respond to that mess of a post. Please return to the regularly scheduled topic.

Remember, movies are not story canon. That is the anime team's doing. And if they had their way Conan would be a super hero who learned everything in Hawaii and break the laws of physics, Kaitou Kid would be an idiot who only knew how to do magic, and Ran would also be a super hero who can inexplicably break knives, rappel without training or proper gear (and break a window in the process), and dodge a bullet. But Mitsu showed that he can think under pressure in Desperate Revival anyway... It was his idea to throw the badges to summon the bats, and he figured out the puzzle with little help from Conan, all while being hunted down by people with guns.

Chek, the problem is that we don't know if there is a legitimate cover story for the BO. We can't just assume that they don't have one. If anyone started sniffing it would be hard to explain certain things if they didn't. I would assume that the lab that Shiho worked in had a cover of a legitimate Biomedical or Biochemical research laboratory. Doing so would aid in getting any and all chemicals and materials needed for research, unless you assume that they got the more regulated compounds from other sources than legitimate. With that in mind one can assume that the BO is smart and is keeping two sets of documents... One is for the public eye and the other is for their personal files that can be destroyed in case they are compromised. Again, they made a virus that destroys everything on a computer if accessed by the wrong personnel. On that same vein... the scientists probably chose that method of death because it can be covered up as anti-cancer research. Also... even pre-escape Shiho would get certain considerations, because she was brought up within the BO, possibly brainwashed, and most certainly forced to be a part of it. She had no choice, and as I said previously, it seems that with the BO, its do or die, and there is more than enough evidence to corroborate that. So even if she did confess (which you are right, she probably would) her lawyer would certainly bring that up as a point of consideration, citing that the death of her only family member by the hands of the people that brought her up snapped her out of any brainwashing. With her upbringing it wouldn't be that difficult to do, nor to convince a jury that was the case. I'd like to end with the fact that people confess tend to have their cases settled out of court. So there would be a debate between the prosecution and defense as to how she would be sentenced, but it wouldn't happen in court, and a judge would make the final decision on her overall sentencing rather than it be a jury of her peers. And if she made it to that point she probably would have already made a deal with any number of police organizations, because Shinichi and Yuusaku have connections to the Metro PD (both), FBI (Shinichi) and Interpol (Yuusaku). So that would be taken into account as well, it is highly likely that before the final battle went down she would give necessary information to them (in addition to likely having completed the antidote and giving it to necessary parties). So it is likely that she would have a plea deal already set up or she would have something else set up for her cooperation with whoever ends up taking down the org (most likely the FBI, and if that is so, and Akai is actually alive, that would help too because of Akai's past relationship with her sister). If she remained in the BO it would be different. I'd like to note that I'm working off American justice system, I don't know much about Japanese... I never had to learn the Japanese justice system, nor is it particularly outlined in DC. So I'll trust you on those details. But either way, with Shiho there are more than just a few mitigating circumstances, from her upbringing, to her own refusal to continue because of the situation with Akemi, to her defection and almost immediate start of research of an antidote after defection.

I'd like to make note that the medical practitioners and scientists who stood trial in that link did completely unethical practices for the Third Reich (or other tyrannical rule). Most of their research was done in concentration camps on prisoners of war, Jews, and other live subjects. Not only that but in mass numbers, much of the testing providing astounding results at the price of torturing prisoners. So those trials and the one that would be brought up against Shiho would be completely different. She never tested on actual humans, nor did she herself force the drug to be tested on any human. In fact... And they would not try her for that because she only tested on mice. (and I highly doubt that the org would state the intent of the research on paper to be "murder" though that would be the true intent) The only people who "tested" on live humans were the murderous agents. And their actions cannot be held accountable by Shiho. She merely did the calculations, which I stated were necessary drug data. Dosages to be effective on different body types, and sizes must be done, including how much would be lethal. When you call a poison control center, they always ask you what drug or poison was consumed, and in what amount... One amount might need a stomach pump and an antidote, and another may only require induced vomiting or to flush the body with copious amounts of water. Not only that... but this is the same organization that could destroy and change documents. Likely most evidence of any research done like that would be destroyed when compromised. We already know that Night Baron destroys entire hard drives if accessed by unauthorized personnel. That would not bode well for circumstantial evidence, but it would hardly be hard evidence because it is likely that she never set it up. She could have known about it but it is more likely that programmers would get the heat for destruction of evidence rather than Shiho who cut ties with them. The only person she would be implicated in is the person you stated, which she only received the file for and never had contact with personally. Likely the person was under the care of someone else, and that too could have been spun in a different way. I do not recall who gave him the drug, but likely the defense would state that he had already ingested the drug and needed to be monitored because at the time no antidote existed. That happens in hospitals all the time. A drug that has no antidote for overdose is ingested, all that can be done is to monitor and make the patient comfortable while tracking the condition of his deterioration for documentation (if stomach pumping is not a viable option anymore). The courts couldn't do anything because she had NO SAY in the administering of the drug to him. She was only told to oversee the drug's progression in his body. Again, there are labs that are currently manufacturing DEADLY VIRUSES. If those viruses happen to be stolen (or sold by someone within the lab) to a terrorist group, the entire lab would not be implicated in trying to kill or any ethical crimes. Research is being done on Apoptosis and other molecular biological systems to induce or repress them, mostly to fight cancer. If any one of them was weaponized, it would not be the fault of the researcher unless they did something specifically unethical, like say... test on humans directly against their will. Unless she can be directly implicated in human testing (Other than Shinichi, whom she was making an antidote for, and he was fully consensual for that research, knowing the risks (which Shiho has repeatedly told him), she cannot stand trial for anything on the ethics board. Did she research how lethal the drug is? Sure, but think about all those drug ads that state "death" as a possible side effect. I sure as hell don't see any of those scientists going to jail for their drug killing people, even though someone likely overdosed or it was used to kill depending on how long the drug was on the market for. Simply researching how lethal a new drug is, is not grounds for anything in court.
-
As much as that is true, we don't know what is on paper. A smart lawyer would say that she was making another drug for a different purpose and she mistakenly made a poison that was perverted by the organization that she was basically forced to join, citing the consequences of leaving (murder of her sister), and that she only continued to work for the org to protect her sister which failed, at which point she tried to kill herself with the very poison they forced her to test after mistakenly stumbled upon. Not only that, but she has already left. She doesn't tell Kudo things, in all likelihood, to protect him from an organization that he has no hopes of beating at the current time. Also... There are other purposes for trying to incite apoptosis... Hell, she could make the argument that she was trying to make a new cancer drug to target growths and incite apoptosis. When the org found out that a non-targeted version could kill, they forced her to concentrate on that. Not only that... But scientists doing research are rarely if ever tried for murder. If that were true then the scientists who worked on WMDs would have been arrested for war crimes. Or the scientists who weaponized certain diseases would have been arrested for murder as well. Their intent was surely to kill, and in mass numbers through biological warfare. There are reasons why they aren't. Because doing research for knowledge can be taken several ways. Unless the scientists actively did trials on humans (which they didn't as far as I know, but they were involved in the investigation of whether or not it killed Kudo, but that could have been theoretically out of their control and forced to investigate), all they can prove is that the scientists were creating a new powerful rat poison. Combine all of that with the fact that she defected and became an enemy of the BO, the FBI or any other agency would be more likely to cut her a deal in exchange for her testimony against the BO.

Are you suggesting that Ran's abilities are in anyway realistic? I beg to differ...I have never once seen a person with Ran's build and training do half the stuff she does. Collapse a table? Crack concrete walls? Granted she is more realistic than Akako, but Gosho has embellished her abilities a bit too far. Her abilities within Karate are super human, though not as much as Makoto's... (Fact: it is impossible to dodge a bullet, period. I blame hollywood for these horrible misconceptions...) In fact... Suggesting that anything about most of the main cast of DC is realistic is ludicrous (I'll not get into MK, since we all know that it is largely supernatural). We have a main character who was shrunken by APTX, explained through the use of BS that the common lay person would not understand. We have an inventor whose inventions should have made him rich by now... A karate black belt whose skill is that of a male world champion (as opposed to a regional female champion). A bumbling detective who seems to have a strangely low resistance (and seems incapable of building a resistance) to sedatives, and who has not yet succumb to alcohol poisoning. The most realistic people are the police. By the by... I choose Akako just because she is just awesome... I have no other reason... Though... I also happen to find Ran annoying...
