Part 1
A tour group is walking in the wooden stair covering around the ancient Jomon Cedar tree when they see a body lying down there, freaking them out. The victim is the representative of the Yakushima forestry department, a non-profit organization managing the island, named Yoshimi Hidaka. Two weeks later, the Mouri’s family is called by her father Taisei Hidaka to find the murder as the local police investigation has fallen to dead end whereas they couldn’t find the murder out of 4 suspects: Ryoya Kitabeppu, who had quarreled with the victim frequently, happened to lead the tour group that found the victim; Taro Tsukada, whom the victim cancelled the engagement upon knowing that he cheated on her; Kasumi Kokusho, Yoshimi’s best friend; and Yuji Yamamoto, who had been caught stalking on the victim.
So the family begins to question the suspects as usual:
- Kitabeppu confirms that he led the group that found her corpse, as they had stayed at the mountain lodge before fulfilling their wish to see the ancient Jomon Cedar tree the next morning. He also confirms to know her and her intention of cutting the number of tourists by half, but stating that is not enough to be the motive for him to kill her. Conan asks him who he suspects to be the culprit the most, but we couldn’t know it for now.
- Tsukada states that he is still in love with Yoshimi but thinks that love is relative and it is not necessary to be loving one person only, making Conan speechless while Kogoro think that he must have aroused his hatred toward her and killed her, to which he denies with the same reason. Conan asks if he processes the wood in this factory, which reminds Kogoro about the factory closure and angers Tsukada when they ask too much.
- Next, Kokusho hopes that the family will soon find the murderer before quickly denying the rumour that she had feelings for Tsukada as well when Kogoro mentions it for her. As for the most probable one to be the murderer, she thinks it is Taro to someone else that we couldn’t know for now (probably the person she guessed could be the true culprit?).
- Finally, Yamamoto denies his relevancies to the murder as he and Yoshimi were childhood friends but rarely talk nowadays, and the reason he observed her from afar (which is not differ from stalking according to many of us) is simply that he likes her, to which Kogoro states that it could be a crime if she felt annoying. Ran asks him if he had expressed his feelings to her yet, to which he answers no as his feelings for her would end upon being rejected by her and swears not to have killed her.
The family decides to have dinner as soon as Kogoro’s stomach strikes. In the middle of the meal, Conan wonders why did the murderer leave her dying in the Jomon Cedar tree, to which Kogoro feels tiring before being realized by some other guests at the restaurant, who firmly believe that Tsukada is the real culprit. Ran then reminds Kogoro that they will go to the scene of the murder from 4 a.m the next day with the help of Kitabeppu and tells him to stop drinking.
The next day, the four arrive at the place where they start climbing the mountain, but before that, they’ll have to walk 8.5 kilometers on the railway from the mountain lodge to that as well. They finally get to witness the majestic ancient Jomon Cedar tree where the victim was left to death before taking a break nearby, but Ran gets scared as she sees a figurehead that looks like The Yamahine of Yakusina, a bloodlusting monster that will drain the victim blood if they are not smiling, according to legend. After finishing their break, the four continue their hiking trip until Conan notices Kokusho is running away from something but ends up falling from the cliff. Before being carried by Kitabeppu to the lodge while waiting for the ambulance, she says something like Yamahine, could it be the one she was running away from?
Part 2
Because the mosses and leaves below absorbed most of the impact from the 10 meters fall, Kokusho is actually fine with only some minor bruises. Conan raises doubts that the culprit must have used the Yahamine legend to distract the investigation, and if this case and the previous murder have something to do then the culprit will not stop there. However, he also notices Yamamoto is watching them, Yamamoto states that Tsukada must have been the murder as he heard from Tsukada that he will receive lots of money. Following what has happened recently, Kogoro believes that statement as well, but Conan and Ran suggest that they should talk directly to him before concluding that he is the culprit.
However, no one is in Tsukada's house when they arrive along with Taisei, so Kogoro calls the police to help look out the harbor and the airports. Later, The two begin to go to the harbor as soon as Taisei recalls that Tsukada could own a boat while Ran and Conan want to investigate the house a bit for some reason. There, Conan and Ran notice the fresh sawdusts, and a secret passage leading to a railroad, so before they follow the railroad, Conan asks Ran to call Kogoro as there will be no phone service when they go along the way.
On the way, Conan reveals the actual reason why Tsukada will make a fortune is not because of the money from Yoshimi’s death, but is because of illegal timber smuggling. However, there is still one unsolved mystery: Is it true that he is the culprit as there is no reason for him to attack Kokusho and he seems unlikely to be the murderer as well. Meanwhile, the searching for Tsukada in the harbor doesn’t seem to be the right direction, so Kogoro decides to call Ran when he sees the message sent from her. Continuing the investigation, Ran and Conan arrive at the cliff where they have seen Kokusho falling and find the surprise awaiting there.

Trivia
- This is the second case to promote tourism in Kagoshima Prefecture, the first being Kogoro Gets Drunk in Satsuma, which aired in February of 2005 and focused mainly on Kagoshima's Satsuma Shōchū, a spirit distilled from sweet potatoes in southern Kyushu. It mainly focused on the cities of Tarumizu and Kagoshima, as well as the former town of Sakurajima, which merged into Kagoshima in 2004. This case is the first however to focus on a location outside of mainland Kagoshima Prefecture, in the town of Yakushima on the island of the same name.
- Likewise, this episode was partnered with Kagoshima Yomiuri Television (KYT), and featured real-life announcers Asami Yokoyama and Naoyuki Uchida, just like Kogoro Gets Drunk in Satsuma featured real-life announcer Yuka Tokuzumi. KYT will also organize a special exhibit related to the Yamahime Legend in February 2025 and a limited-merchandise event will take place in Kagoshima City in March[2].
- Kagopita (かごピタ) was a real-life evening news program which ran from October 3, 2014 to March 29, 2024 and was hosted by Uchida and Yokoyama. It was succeeded on April 6, 2024 by the morning news program "Kagopita Familiar" (かごピタFAMILIAR), shown in the case.
- The Hidakas' surname (日高) originates from Kagoshima Prefecture, originating from the "Hidaka" branch of the Seiwa Genji clan from Satsuma and Ōsumi provinces, nowadays Kagoshima and Miyazaki Prefectures. It is also common on Yakushima, with 13% of residents having the surname. Taisei Hidaka's voice actor Kozo Shioya is also from Kagoshima[3]. Kitabeppu's last name (北別府) is mostly found in Kagoshima Prefecture, mainly in Soo City[4]. Lastly, Kokushō (国生) also originates from Kagoshima Prefecture[5].
- The supermarket Yamamoto works at is the real-life coop-owned A-COOP Miyanoura Store in Miyanoura, Yakushima.
- The "SAPO" beer Kogoro drinks at the restaurant is named after Sapporo Beer.
- The hotel the Mouri Family stays at is the Samana Hotel Yakushima.
- Kitabeppu's car is a white Nissan Silvia S15. The license plate is 屋久島 330, に · 5 50 (Yakushima 330, Ni · 5 50).
- The hospital Kokusho is taken to is the real-life Yakushima Tokushokai Hospital (屋久島徳洲会病院).
- Taisei Hidaka's car is a dark turquoise Toyota Corolla (E120). The license plate is 屋久島 503, す 24·98 (Yakushima 503, Su 24·98).
