Katsuyuki Konishi (小西 克幸 Konishi Katsuyuki?), born April 21, 1973 in Wakayama, Wakayama, Japan, is a Japanese voice actor and a former actor who is affiliated with the talent agency Ken Production.

In Shin Samurai-den Yaiba he is the voice of Kenjuro Kurogane.

Biography

Katsuyuki Konishi was formerly the vice-leader of the theater group HeroHero Q, led by Tomokazu Seki. Although he is currently inactive in the group[1], he spent many years performing and rehearsing with them, after being personally invited to join by Seki, an offer that really excited him.

He graduated from the Electronic Mechanics Department at Wakayama Technical Senior High School, 4th class. A very active child, Konishi was involved in the Boy Scouts and spent his school years deeply engaged in football, from upper elementary through the end of high school. Because of this, he didn’t watch much anime growing up, though he was familiar with Captain Tsubasa.

In high school, he joined the film club mainly to play video games on the auditorium screen. After saying he didn’t want a typical office job, a clubmate introduced him to the idea of becoming a voice actor, a job he barely understood at the time.

That suggestion got him interested. He began researching training schools and got help from his older sister, who had once considered the same path. She recommended the Katsuta Voice Actor Academy, known for its strict discipline. Thinking he’d do well in a tough environment, Konishi moved to Tokyo and joined the school as an 11th class student.

At Katsuta, he heard both discouragement and praise. Some teachers told him to quit, saying he wasn’t cut out for the job, while others believed in his potential and compared him to Toshiyuki Morikawa, a senior from the same school. After graduation, he trained further in a workshop led by industry legends Michiko Nomura, Nachi Nozawa, and Kenji Utsumi (the founder of Ken Production), becoming part of their very first group of students. Later, Nomura personally invited him to join Ken Production.

Konishi debuted professionally in 1996 and got his first anime role in 1997 as Volfogg in The King of Braves GaoGaiGar. Over the years, Konishi gained recognition for his work and was honored with the Best Supporting Actor award at the 9th Seiyu Awards on March 2015 for his role as Ritsu Kisaragi in La Corda d'Oro Blue Sky.

Relationships

Over the years, Konishi developed many strong personal and professional ties in the voice acting industry.

  • He worked closely with Masaya Onosaka on the 2003 game Tales of Symphonia. They became close friends and gaming buddies. Their connection deepened through the long-running radio show Onosaka & Konishi's O+K starting in 2010. Because Onosaka often hosted events for the Tales series, Konishi joined year after year.
  • Konishi is a junior to Toshiyuki Morikawa and once idolized him from afar due to the strict senior-junior boundaries in school. They eventually became friendly after co-starring in the Sexy Effect drama, which Konishi described as a turning point in their relationship.
  • He first met Akira Ishida during Samurai Deeper Kyo, and later became a devoted fan. With Yuki Kaida, he jokingly formed an Akira Ishida Guard Squad and called himself the captain. Starting in 2013, their radio show Today’s Akira, Tomorrow’s Katsuyuki allowed more personal interaction. Konishi even tried to convince the usually reserved Ishida to appear in more events.
  • He has a long-standing friendship with Daisuke Hirakawa, who was in the same training class. They're so familiar with each other that Konishi once joked he wouldn’t want to play opposite Hirakawa in a BL role or go on a survival trip with him.
  • He’s also close with Kishō Taniyama, having known him before joining Ken Production. Their mutual understanding is clear during event appearances for series like Polar Bear Café and La Corda d'Oro.
  • Konishi and Junichi Suwabe joked on a radio show that they're professional rivals, saying they “kill each other” for roles, which limits their chances to work together.
  • He’s collaborated frequently with Shin-ichiro Miki on long-running series like Pokémon, calling him a trusted and long-term partner.
  • He also has good working relationships with Ryotaro Okiayu and Eiji Takemoto, built through shared projects over the years.
