Conan faces the enigmatic "Night Baron".
Night Baron Murder Case (闇の男爵殺人事件 ,Naito Baron Satsujin Jiken?) is the 68th, 69th, and 70th episode of the Detective Conan anime. The first three-episode case of the series, it follows Conan, Ran and Kogoro to the idyllic beach resort of Izu, having received hotel tickets from professor Agasa. However, the trip quickly turns into an open-air mystery, as the tickets were only half-paid for, and the payout to the remaining part is only received if one solves a mystery tour organized by a mysterious person nicknamed the "Night Baron", a costumed thief turned murderer from Yusaku Kudo's best selling novel series. As Conan nears the truth, he is sabotaged by Night Baron. Later, one of the tour participants is killed while wearing the Night Baron costume. While everyone suspects it to be an accident, Conan knows there is more to it, and that Night Baron is not just a reference to the novel character. Adapted from volume 8 by Masato Sato, it is animated by Keiko Sasaki, Akio Kawamura and Izumi Shimura, who would later become veterans of the animation team. The plot is praised for its well-thought-out tricks and for its traditional murder-mystery-styled investigation, and cements itself as one of the masterpieces of Gosho Aoyama's early work.
