Was he being blackmailed? Uhm... If she WAS the sister, she was checking with the wife about the murder. Then, right before they left, she called the wife and told her they were coming home. Perhaps the wife and the sister switched places to make sense. The wife arrived as the sister and the sister pretended to be the wife.
