Kogoro, Ran, and Conan are on a hiking trip in Nishitama. When they reach the Mt. Kotengu observation deck, they witness a man jump off the edge to his death. The body was found at the bottom of the hill and is identified to be Takaya Hirai.

The culprit is Eiichiro Kondo. Conan investigates the scene and realizes that it was a murder made to look like an accident. He explains that Kondo was the one who they saw jump off the observation deck and reveals that when Kondo jumped, he landed on a tree below the cliff where he then proceeded to push the unconscious Hirai off the tree. As evidence, Conan reveals that the tree had a mejiro's nest and that spider's web, a collectible that mejiro birds use to build their nests, was found on Hirai. To incriminate Kondo, Conan explains that Kondo's footprint from his mountaineering boots was found on the tree.

Kondo confesses and reveals that Hirai was blackmailing him after he accidentally caused the death of a co-worker. The accident occurred as they were arguing with Hirai who was illegally selling wildlife plants to young tourists. They were arguing on the edge of a cliff, when their female co-worker tried to calm them down he accidentally shoved causing her to fall from the cliff to her death.

On the bus, Kogoro found with the binoculars a nearby hotspring with some women bathing in it.

Trivia

• The Nishi Tokyo Bus B001 from Shin Hachioji Station to Mt. Kotengu is the same in The Tenth Passenger. The license plate number is 西多摩 22 • か 23-79 (Nishitama 22 • Ka 23-79).
