Situation

Part 1

Conan has to deal with some stiff competition when Heiji Hattori, heralded as the ‘Great Detective of the West', comes looking for Shinichi Kudo to prove which of them is the best detective. However, before Conan can save his reputation, he must first save himself, as a mysterious sickness threatens to close his file for good!

The killer was none other than Kimie, Tsujimura's wife. 20 years ago, she was married to a man named Kenji Yamashiro and they had a little daughter; Tsujimura, who was in love with Kimie and jealous of Yamashiro, staged a cruel trap to accuse Yamashiro of being involved in a fraud (with the help of his father Toshimitsu). Yamashiro was sent to jail and died there soon, then Tsujimura courted the extremely distraught Kimie and, as soon as Yamashiro died, convinced her to marry him. Kimie wqas unaware of this and accepted, as she was completely devastated and had to give up her child's custody to Yamashirou's family.

20 years after the "fraud", Takayoshi brought a picture of the girl he had fallen for... who happened to be Yukiko, Kimie and Yamashirou's daughter. Tsujimura was horrified and started screaming at his son for wanting to marry "that man's child". Kimie recognized Yukiko in the picture and started to get suspicious, then Tsujimura revealed the truth to her. So she planned to kill her "husband" to get at him, using her visit to Kogoro to ask about Yukiko's family as an excuse that would provide her for an alibi.

Dub changes

• In the English Dub, after the accusation of spying on Ran Shinichi states that he's a detective & that's what he does, whereas in the Japanese Version he states that he can tell how Ran is doing by hearing her voice.
• In the English Dub, Heiji drops subtle hints that the two men who poisoned him were Gin and Vodka, whereas in the Japanese Version he merely acknowledges Shinichi as a worthy rival. The dub change presumably was made to fix a story problem for the upcoming Game Company Murder Case (see that page's continuity error).
• In the English Dub, Heiji also, in the same lines about Gin and Vodka, alludes to the fact that he already knows that Shin'ichi is Conan, despite the fact that he doesn't deduce this until his next appearance in Holmes Freak Murder Case.
• There may also be some subtle foreshadowing of Heiji being a part of the Black Organization in his words about Gin and Vodka, but because this only occurs in the dub, it is most likely a mistake on the dub's scripter's part.
