Togo Kaieda (海江田 藤伍 Kai'eda Tōgo?) is a character in the movie franchise Detective Conan. He is a suspect and antagonist in movie 21.

Background

Togo Kaieda was a middle-aged man living in the Kansai region. Many years ago, he joined Achiwa Real Estate (阿知波不動産会社), a company mainly active in the Naniwa Ward of Osaka city.[2] He quickly climbed the ranks, and became responsable of carrying out many illegal actions for the company. He was then appointed as the personal secretary of Kensuke Achiwa. He also came to know Kensuke's wife Satsuki. He would regularly wash their car just before one of Satsuki's karuta tournaments for good luck. Five years ago, after Satsuki killed Shikao Nagoro in a fit of rage, Kaieda was summoned by Kensuke to help wash off the blood and dispose of Nagoro's body. In most recent years, he had kept low profile and stopped being Achiwa's secretary, as the rumours about the illegal activities in Achiwa Real Estate started to surface. In the novel, it is said that he escaped to Hong Kong.[3]

Personality

Togo Kaieda is a very serious and a no-bullshit person, which can be seen in his stone-cold face. He also seems to enjoy the crimes he partakes in, smiling whenever he would need to pull the trigger of the bombs. His loyalty and ability to perform all kinds of tasks, even the more cumbersome ones, made him close to president Achiwa. Although he is able to perform tasks with ease, it seems that his own intellectual abilities are not very high, as he never doubted his superior.

He speaks in the Kansai dialect.

Appearance

Kaieda diguised as an employee.

Kaieda is a tall bulky man with short black spiky hair. He has a broad face, with a thick jawline and thin piercing eyes. His strength is superior to that of a normal person, as he is able to knock down a security guard with no problem. He is mainly seen wearing formal suits, but in his last action, he is wearing the staff uniform of Satsuki Hall employees. He wears a distinctive silver ring on his left thumb, with a purple diamond encrusted in it.[3]

In the novel version, it is said that he practices kendo.[3]

Plot overview

Even though he is a key character in the case and one of its culprits, he does not actually appear much, only having a little screen time before his death. He only speaks for about two sentences. His role is bigger in the novel and paper editions, as he fights the main characters and is seen carrying out the crimes.

When Kensuke Achiwa hatches his plan to kill anyone related to Shikao Nagoro in order to maintain his deceased wife's honor, Kaieda carries out the plan for him. First, he heads to Toshiya Yajima's private mansion in Higashiyama and grabs a sword to kill him, but when he notices that the blade has rusted and stuck to the sheath, he resorts to beating him to death. Next, he goes to the Osaka Nichiuri TV headquarters and plants two sports bag with bombs inside it, one of them being on the film set next to the precious Satsuki-Kai karuta cards, in order to ensure that they would be destroyed in the explosion. Then, after most of the people are evacuated, he detonates the first bomb and waits to make sure everyone has left. At that point, he is only seen as a black figure, but it is hinted to the viewers that he is Kaieda, because there is the ring on the thumb. With binoculars, he looks at the building and sees Mikiko Hiramoto and a security guard leaving, which prompts him to detonate the second bomb, but unbeknownst to him, Heiji and Kazuha were still inside. He then swiftly exits the crime scene. Two days later, he sneaks in the underground parking of Osaka's New Otani Hotel, where he plants a bomb under Koji Sekine's car. When the convoy of tournament participants, among which is Sekine, leaves the parking lot, Kaieda detonates the bomb, instantly blowing away Sekine. However, this time, the victim survives. He was then probably supposed to kill Momiji, as she had received the fourth threatening email with the karuta card, but due to the heavy protection that night assured by Inspector Ayanokoji, Heiji and the butler Muga Iori, he was not able to do so. The killing of Momiji was then moved to the day of the tournament by Achiwa.

Kaieda sneaks into the warehouse.

In the novel, after blowing up Sekine's car on the highway, he is confronted by Heiji, Conan and Ayanokoji and fights Heiji, after taking down a few officers, where he accidentally lets him see the name of Shikao Nagoro. He then blows up a truck and manages to escape on his motorcycle. The novel also states that he stole the bombs from a demolition site in Wakayama Prefecture.[3]

On the opening day of the Satsuki Cup, Kaieda manages to sneak in by pretending to be an employee, while wearing the uniform and showing appropriate ID which was given beforehand by his boss. He penetrates the security room with ease and knocks down the security guard. He then proceeds to smash the fire-prevention system and leaves the room. He then runs through the forest to a secluded warehouse and places a bomb in it. When he configurates the bomb, the timer sets to two seconds and before he has any time to react, it blows him apart. Moments later, Heiji, Conan and Ayanokoji arrive at the scene of the explosion and figure out that the victim was Kaieda, not Nagoro, because of the ring that was left behind. Since Kaieda had received an email prior to that with a karuta card attached to it, it is revealed that Achiwa was planning to get rid of him from the start.

In the novel, for the explosion that kills him in the Satsuki Hall, he does not enter the small warehouse. Instead, he breaks into a small truck filled with explosives, of which he also knocked out the worker. He is then killed by the explosion.[3]

Relationships analysis

Kensuke Achiwa and the Achiwa Group

Kensuke Achiwa is Kaieda's boss and he has been known as the businessman's right-hand man, doing all the shady business for him. He was so close to him he would drive Achiwa and his wife to tournaments and personally wash the car as a good-luck ritual before. He also directs the other two bodyguards and assistants of Achiwa, but later went into hiding. He was replaced as secretary by a middle-aged woman with glasses.

Victims

Togo Kaieda killed his victims quickly and did not hesitate to inflict pain on them. Even though none of them had a personal connection to him, he nonetheless enjoyed the act, and would smile during his bombings. He would not hesitate to use brute force, notably seen when he knocks down a guard.

Heiji Hattori

Heiji Hattori fights Kaieda in the novel, and during their fight on the highway, the sleeve of his jacket rolls up, revealing the name "Nagoro", which will become an important clue for Conan later.

Trivia

  • His last name means "sea/ocean" (海), "creek/bay" (江) and "rice paddy" (田). It is an uncommon, but not rare surname, mostly prevailing in Kagoshima and Miyazaki Prefectures, but with significant presence in Osaka. Other readings are Kaeda and Umieda, but Kaieda is most common.[4] His first name means "wisteria tree" (藤) and "five" (伍), probably referring to a fifth child or a fifth in the family lineage. It is a rare first name.
  • His voice actor, Koji Ishii, is from Wakayama Prefecture, and thus speaks in the Kansai dialect. Ishii later went on to voice Ginzo Nakamori when Unsho Ishizuka died.
