Case

Situation

Kogoro, Ran, and Conan are waiting for the train when they notice a group of people leaving work on a Sunday. Once they boarded the train, the group finds their co-worker dead in an empty train car.

Murder

Location: Train (JR Yamanote Line) car 2

Cause of death: Blowdart poisoning

Suspects: Seiji Kurata, Shizuka Kawai, and Yukiko Mori

Seiji found Kiyomi in train seat, but when he touched her to wake her up, the body fell onto the train floor dead.

After all three are presented as possible suspects Conan notices a couple of clues, there is a mark on her ear and a line on her arm.

The culprit is Yukiko Mori. First, she knew Kiyomi was leaving first, saw her off at the station, and established what time she boarded the train. She timed how long it would take for the body to loop back around to the station and return.

The murder weapon is the headphones, before giving them to Kiyomi she had rigged them with a small needle coated with poison. So that when Kiyomi put on the headphones the needle would prick her ear introducing the poisoning and thus killing her.

When they boarded the train, Yukiko took too long to retrieve the headphones as they were stuck because Kiyomi was in rigor she yanked them so hard that they snapped. When Yukiko opens the CD player, she finds a thank you message wrritten by Kiyomi on the CD, Conan had noticed that on the one of CD label was pink ink that had been cut off. She breaks down, confesses and reveals that she became enraged after Kiyomi stole her boyfriend.

Trivia

• According to the mini disc label, this episode's plot takes place August 22, 1999.
• The songs Yukiko has on her CDs are from Yoko Okino, Miho Komatsu, and TWO-MIX.
• The use of MD Players would have been abnormal if the timeline of Detective Conan took place in the late 2010s or 2020s, since Sony has ceased development of MD devices, with the last of the players sold by March 2013.
