Biography
After finishing junior high, Chiba moved to Tokyo for work and got a job in a factory. While working full-time, he studied and eventually passed an audition for the Fuji Theater Company, starting his path as an actor. Early in his career, he used his physical skills in various roles, including in the Nikkatsu Roman Porno film series, working both as an actor and stuntman. Later, he joined the Togei Theater Company and also appeared in TV dramas.
Chiba's voice acting career began in 1976 with the anime Dokaben, and over time he shifted his focus to voice work. In the 1984 anime Fist of the North Star, he voiced a villain and also served as the narrator. In 1985, he landed his first lead role in High School! Bizarre Gumi. That same year, he brought together young voice actors to form a small theater group called Burstman, which later disbanded. In 1989, he tried his hand at sound direction for the first time on the OVA Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai!, directed by Mamoru Oshii. Since then, he has taken on sound directing roles alongside voice acting.
Chiba is also active in mentoring young talent and has been a director at the C & O Actors Studio. Though he focuses more on training now, he still acts occasionally, including in Oshii’s film The Red Spectacles.
After spending time with several companies like the Fuji Theater Company, Togei Theater, and Production M3, Chiba joined 81 Produce.
On January 9, 2017, he was ranked 20th in TV Asahi’s special program "200 Popular Voice Actors Chosen Seriously!" during a three-hour broadcast.
