| − | At Fudo High School, a lazy high school student named Hajime Kindaichi is little late at class when he fell asleep at the roof of high school. In class, there is Kindaichi's childhood friend named Miyuki Nanase who is little worried about him. Kindaichi sneaks to the window from the outside and knocks the window to give Miyuki attention. Kindaichi is holding the rain pipe to not fall off the building. The teacher appears and finds out that Kindaichi's causing trouble. Suddenly, the rain pipe came off the wall of the building and Kindaichi is about to fall to his death but saved by Miyuki and the teacher.

| − | At the teacher's lounge, the teachers are talking about the troublemaker, Kindaichi. The teacher cannot believe that Miyuki and Kindaichi (which the teacher calls him an idiot) are childhood friends. All of a sudden, the drama club advisor named Ogata doesn't think Kindaichi is an idiot. The teacher still thinks Kindaichi is an idiot because he always comes late and leaves early. He doesn't even show up to half of his classes. His test scores are horrible and he is terrible in sports. Ogata knows that's not his true self and she knows something very special about him that he is related to the famous detective, Kousuke Kindaichi.

| − | One week later, Kindaichi and Miyuki are riding on a train to go on a trip. In Japan, every year a National High School Drama Contest is held so the nine members of the drama club were soon off to annual training camp. The 12th grade student named Fuse is inviting Miyuki to play cards with him. During card playing, Fuse can read people's mind when they picked the card while Fuse's not looking at them for picking. Until sudden, Kindaichi reveals the trick of how Fuse can tell the card that the girls pick is because the back of the card has a little diamond symbol at the top left corner. He can tell the suit and value of any card by the marks. Fuse suddenly suggest Kindaichi to do some entertainment and Kindaichi doesn't mind at all. Kindaichi tells Fuse to pick any card from the deck and Fuse picks the Ace of Spades. Kindaichi now tells Fuse to put the Ace of Spades on the top of the deck. Kindaichi now asks Fuse which card is on top of the deck and of course, he answers the Ace of Spades. It is actually wrong because now on top of the deck is actually three hearts. The Ace of Spades was in Fuse's shirt pocket. Fuse bought the deck of cards from the department store that's close to the train station.

| − | They arrived on an island where they will stay at the place called the Opera House Hotel. The hotel has been on the island for centuries. All the high school students checked in and started to practice the play, the Phantom of the Opera.

| − | At the dining room, Kindaichi and Arimori are about to take any seat for a meal but got scolded by a man named Kenmochi. Kenmochi was being rude to Kindaichi and he hates kids. Kindaichi thinks Kenmochi is a big jerk. Arimori tells Kindaichi to calm down and let it go. The reason why Kenmochi scolded at Kindaichi is because he's sitting at Kenmochi's chair where there's name displayed on the table. When everyone's gathered on the table, Orie is not here. They hear a scream from the theatre. When they go find Orie, she has been crushed by the heavy lights. Miyuki fainted after seeing the dead body.

| − | Kindaichi gathers everyone to the dining room to present his deduction. He's about to tell how the murders happened and who the phantom really is. The day before the group got to the Opera House, the murderer checked in to the hotel by the name of "Kagetsu" and then after he strictly told the staff not to disturb him, he sneaked off the isolated island by using the rubber boat. The suitcase he brought had a rubber boat inside. By the time the group got to the island, Kagetsu's room was already empty. The murderer then came back to the island as if he'd never been there. The murderer is still currently among the group and that's how the murderer made the trick to get an alibi. While the group are rehearsed on the first day, the murderer was already preparing. He used the theater's sound equipment to record Orie's scream from the rehearsal. Then, he got her to meet him later on stage by threatening to tell the truth about Fuyuko's incident. He purposely timed it around dinnertime to create his alibi. He set a timer on the reel in the sound room and they all heard the recorded scream and came running. But at time, Orie Hidaka was still alive. The recorded scream was coming out of the speakers from the theatre and they didn't hear it was because of the curtain down. The thick outside curtain on the stage. When it's down, you can't hear the sound of the speaker even when you're on stage. When Orie was killed, the curtain was down.
