Summary and assumptions

This sheet is meant to document the specific blindness-related depiction and behaviors of characters who are known to be blinded on one side so that other blinded characters can be identified, even if they are hiding that fact.

In real life, people with a nonfunctional eye will lack corresponding peripheral vision. Thus they will be required to turn their whole face in order to see things on their blinded side, and may miss observations if they are out of sight. Blinded people also have problems with depth perception. Some of these limitations may be carried over to the manga if Gosho has done appropriate research.

General observations

  • Characters with bad eyes don't overfavor turning towards their good eye side to see people who are mostly behind them - they will turn with whichever side is closer, even if it is their bad one. (Yamato)
  • Characters with one eye still do certain quirky Gosho things like speak with their eye(s) shut for a moment and then open them for the dramatic punchline. (Yamato)
  • At least two Gosho characters with blinded eyes wear glasses that are always dark over the bad eye. (Kuroda, Magic Kaito dude)

Special Metrics to look for

  • Number panels with char interacting with look directly toward:
  • Number panels with char interacting with look aside (on bad side):
  • Number panels with char interacting with look aside (on good side):
  • Number panels with char interaction simply not facing or looking at the interactee.:
  • Number panels with char's head turned for interaction
  • Number panels with char's head straight ahead for interaction
  • Total number panels with char looking or interacting that qualify for any of the above:

Hyoue Kuroda

Kuroda is blinded in his right eye. Kuroda in his intro case very rarely spoke to anyone with his head turned. He either stood and looked at them directly or he didn't at all. This might be a hint in and of itself. People who don't turn heads could be more suspicious.

  • 914p3 - Talks to people in his blindspot standing behind him. turning his head, but not far enough to see them. Turns to face them more fully by the next page.
  • 914p14 - Talks to Koumei at his 3 o'clock without turning his head, just looking to the side at him. He shouldn't be able to see Koumei easily since Koumei is on his bad side.

Yamato Kansuke

Yamato is blinded in his left eye. While Yamaoto may give aside glances at first when his name is called, he tends to turn his head fully toward the speaker when being spoken to or holding a longer conversation (Yamato vs Koumei). Koumei in contrast seems to be more comfortable speaking without turning his head fully if the speaker is still in his peripheral vision. (count pls) Yamato holds conversations with people in his blindspot, so long as the conversation doesn't require him to see the other.

  • 913p5 - Turns whole face to see Koumei in contrast to Koumei who can see him in his right eye's peripheral while his left eye is shut.
  • 913p5 - Turns whole face to see Yui, Yui does the same.
  • 913p6 - Catches Conan staring at him in the peripheral of his functional eye, turns to look at Conan full forward over the next two panels
  • 913p6 - Hears his name called and glances left. He probably shouldn't be able to see the speakers given they are in the periphery of his bad left eye. Turns his head 90 degrees to face the other police directly in next two panels. Koumei can see over his shoulders without turning his body as much. Yui was already faced in their direction.
  • 913p8 - Speaks to Yui while looking out of the peripheral of his good eye.
  • 913p13 - Has to turn his head fully 90 degrees to see where Koumei is squatting with a body at his 8 o'clock. The body Yamato was looking for was in the blind space of his bad eye and thus he missed it.
  • 913p14 - Looks back at the head of the body behind him using his good eye's peripheral vision.
  • 913p15 - Talks to a cohort with his head inclined in that man's direction, but can't see that man because he is standing in his blindspot.
  • 913p15 - Looks sharply back behind him using his good eye's peripheral vision.
  • 914p8 - Looks back towards Koumei at his 7 o'clock using his bad side. He could have tried using his good side, but apparently Yamato isn't biased enough to consider overturning with his good side.
  • 914p9 - Looked at Koumei at 3 o'clock without turning his head with his good eye.
