The killer was Akiko Kinoshita's companion and body double Yoko Asanuma, out of jealousy since Akiko always got fame and recognization but she only got to play second fiddle to her. Yoko first forged a letter in which Akiko said she was ill and wanted to commit suicide; later, she drugged Akiko and put a white kimono on her (while waring a similar one), taking her outside and leaving her to freeze to death in the snow.

As Yoko returned to the hot springs, she was seen by Ran from afar; however, the white robe she was wearing confused her, and she thought Yoko was the legendary Yuki-onna (a Japanese ghost whose trademark was her white clothes). Later, Akiko's body would be found, and thanks to the false letter everyone thought at first that she had killed herself out of depression for her supposed bad health.
