Conan, Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, Genta, and Haibara are running along when they see Wataru Takagi he says there's a case at Fukurokouji's house. He was robbed of about 3 million yen in cash. The children decide not to interupt and head off to Central Park.

When they get there they find the pond is off limits as there's a snapping turtle in the pond. The group chat about it and Mitsuhiko tells the group about it from a book.
Having a non-native animal could disrupt their ecosystem. Conan notices a woman listening in to their conversation so he says to go to the pet shop that the owner would go to. He says they must have bought a lot of small fish to make turtle food.

Conan finds the woman as she starts running after what she said. He confronts her and says she's the one who abandoned the turtle. She explains that she found a boyfriend but he didn't like it. Mitsuhiko annoys Haibara (accidently) and she leaves to do some stuff on her own.
Then all of a sudden a man claims the turtle to be his! His name is Nihonmatsu. The group confront him.

He claims he was trying to make up for a mistake he regretted. When he was little he bought a green turtle but then he couldn't be bothered to look after it so he released it into a nearby pond.

Then there is news back at the pond where three other turtles have been found! Nihonmatsu asks for all of them saying they must've been mating and it would be cruel to seperate them.
Mitsuhiko notices Nihonmatsu's finger is bandaged but before he can fully explain, the crowd applaud as the security say they've caught one!

Conan and Mitsuhiko discover Nihonmatsu has a lot of debt in addition to all of the rent he owes. He's a pretty bothersome tenant and has made no unusual purchases of turtle food. They realise he's not intending to sell the turtles because it wouldn't cover his issue.

Conan and the group follow Nihonmatsu to a shop. They see him sighing and guess that he really only wanted one of the four snapping turtles specifically. But they got mixed up, and he can't tell them apart. It'd be better just to take them all back. There must be something special about one of those turtles. Conan then follows Nihonmatsu meeting two debt collectors. He says he has the 1 million yen. Conan realises that somehow, when Nihonmatsu gets that turtle, he can pay off his debts...
Conan finds the burnt remains of the mask and gloves that Detective Takagi was talking about this morning. Ayumi runs off to fetch Takagi.
It proves that the thief escaped to here after stealing the 3 million yen from that house. So the stuff he used last night was also disposed of here. So it's possible that last night's burglary, and Nihonmatsu wanting to find the snapping turtle in the pond are related.
The group report their evidence to Detective Takagi: Nihonmatsu is tall and skinny, said "I'll definately pay off all my debts today and there's a bandage around his finger, so he either burnt his finger or got bitten by the turtle.
But if that guy's the culprit and he already got the 3 million yen, why can't he pay off his debt? Meanwhile all four turtles have been caught. So Conan asks about the person who told them to capture them? The men say it was a young male on the phone. Conan can't put his finger on it.
Conan, Takagi, and the rest of the group decide to research the turtles. Meanwhile Nihonmatsu is told he is not allowed to raise the turtles because there is paperwork that needs to be dealt with, so he'll have to wait a week. Conan and the group wait outside Nihonmatsu's location.

Nihonmatsu then runs off to his locker. He trys to put the coin in but it won't go in. Conan is one step ahead of him. "You wanted to pay a one-week rental fee. If you leave it there for more than three days, management will confiscate the contents inside. The coin locker was made so that, without a key, you can't open it." Takagi and the police then open the locker with the key and find the 3 million yen!
Because he was in debt, he stole 3 million yen from Fukurokouji last night. But once he put the money in the coin locker he failed - He burned the mask and gloves that way he'd only need to retrieve the money one dawn broke - but unexpectedly whilst he was burning the evidence a snapping turtle swallowed his key! (During the process he gets bitten) That's where his plan failed!
The research the group did was actually an x-ray of the turtle proving the key is inside. Then Conan continues to say he ran city hall so they'd capture it and that he could retrieve it from the stomach.

Nihonmatsu makes a run for it but Conan uses the combination of his Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes and Anywhere Ball Dispensing Belt to cause Nihonmatsu to stumble and fall. Takagi and his assistant catch up to him and arrest him.
Haibara and Conan are discussing how all four turtles have new owners. Suddenly Haibara, Mitsuhiko, and Genta say they saw a Crane up ahead and there's more than one! "After a turtle comes a Crane!"
