Biography

Yoshitada Otsuka was born on May 19, 1954 in Aba village, Tomata district, Okayama Prefecture (part of Tsuyama city since 2005)[1]. He spent his childhood in the fields of his hometown[1]. He was rather mediocre in mathematics in elementary school, but excelled at Japanese, especially at reading out loud, for which he was praised by his teachers[1]. He later completed his middle school and high school studies in Tsuyama city, but felt that the other high school students looked "sophisticated", making him feel inferior to them[1]. Following the completion of his studies, he moved to Tokyo, with no particular aim in getting a career[1].

While he was working part-time as a server, he talked to a customer who was a producer for a dubbing company, and he realized that this was what he wanted to be[2]. He thus studied acting at Natsuko Kawaji's school and later perfected his singing and on-stage performance[3],[4]. He has few memories of his first stage performances, as he was often scared of the others on stage and performed roles where he was killed early[5]. Starting his career, he first received dubbing roles for western movies, before landing his first major dubbing role in 1984[4]. Falling in love with his first role, he decided to further his career in voice-acting.

In 2017, he notably received the prize for best actor in a supporting role at the 11th Seiyuu Awards[6]. While he was originally credited under his real name "Yoshitada", he heard many times people mistakenly calling him "Hochu", another reading for the kanji that make up his first name, and decided to adopt it as a stage name[7].
