A woman named Masami Hirota shows up at Kogoro's Detective Agency and asks him to find Kent Hirota, her father. Rearranging Kent's cat's name, they realize it's the name of a racing horse. They find him at a horse track but the next day, Kent is found dead and Masami missing. Conan remembers that he accidentally placed a tracker on Masami but the batteries in his glasses run out. Another detective is discovered who is tracking Masami down for his client Akira Hirota. After Conan's glasses are recharged, they head to Masami's location and find Akira dead.
In the manga version of the story Gin and Vodka are the masterminds of the case (rather than Okita), and they end up killing Masami Hirota/Akemi Miyano who informs Conan of the organization's existence. This would lead to Ai Haibara's appearance in the series.
