Yoko Okino (沖野 ヨーコ Okino Youko ), which is also the character's name in the Funimation dub, is a character in the manga and anime franchise, Detective Conan. Yoko is a pop-star that Kogoro Mouri is completely infatuated with. Kogoro has all of her appearances in movies and music on tape and DVD, and has even appeared on her cooking show. Yoko considers Mouri, Ran, and Conan Edogawa to be good friends, and often invites them to parties, including private parties, and dinners. However, this often leads to murder cases.
Background
Yoko Okino started her idol career as a member of the quartet "Earth Ladies", along with Kaoru, Yuki Takeno, and Terumi Hoshino. The team was quite succesful, but after some time they disbanded to pursue their own careers. Yoko has remained successful and quite popular in the pop idol and acting business.[1]
Yoko first met Conan, Kogoro and his daughter Ran when she asked for Kogoro's help in apprehending a stalker who had even penetrated her appartment (and of course, Kogoro would not hesitate to take the case). But in the appartment they found an unknown man impaled upon a knife, turning this case into a murder investigation. Soon, however, Conan figured out that the 'victim' had actually committed suicide: He was Yoko's former boyfriend, who had been pressed by her manager into leaving her but continued to pursue her ever since because he still loved her. Due to a fatal misunderstanding, however, he fell into despair and committed suicide, making it appear as if he had been murdered in order to take revenge on Yoko. Luckily, Conan found out the truth before such damage could be inflicted.[2]
Overcoming her grief, Yoko has carried on her career and has remained a friend and valuable contact to Kogoro and Conan in the TV and idol industry ever since.
Name origin
The name "Yoko Okino" is probably a reference to the Japanese-American artist and musician Ono Yōko (小野洋子).
Personality
Yoko is a modest and friendly person whose fame hasn't got into her head and is devoted to her friends and fans; perhaps one of the reaons she has remained popular to this date.
Trivia
- In episode 495, Yoko is seen singing Yukidoke no ano kawa no nagare no you ni (the 29th closing song) on TV. Kogoro, who was watching her, couldn't help but praise her singing voice.[3]
